Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For dirt and rally races in Forza Horizon 4, PC Gamer recommends the Hoonigan Gymkhana 9 Ford Focus RS RX for its loose-surface balance, snow tires, and easy steering. It is an editorial pick, not a verified all-time ranking, and its relatively low top speed can be a drawback outside races. Cross-country and deep-water events call for a different choice: SUVs, trophy trucks, and buggies are better suited to those sections than low-slung or lightweight cars.
Best off-road cars depend on the event
“Off-road” covers several jobs in FH4. A car that feels composed on dirt or snow may not be the best choice for cross-country routes with deep water, muddy fields, and varied obstacles. Before picking a vehicle, check the event’s class restrictions and surface, then weigh grip and control against speed. The available sources do not provide a consistent performance test across the full car roster, so there is no substantiated universal winner or all-time leaderboard ranking.

| Dirt and rally races | Hoonigan Gymkhana 9 Ford Focus RS RX | PC Gamer recommends it for winter and dirt/rally, citing snow tires, loose-surface balance, and easy steering. PC Gamer’s FH4 car recommendations | PC Gamer notes its top speed is relatively low; treat this as an editorial recommendation, not an independently measured ranking. |
| Cross-country and deep water | Choose an SUV, trophy truck, or buggy suited to the event | Official Xbox guidance identifies these vehicle types as better suited to deep streams than low-slung supercars and lightweight cars. Xbox Wire’s seasonal driving tips | Match the vehicle to the event’s class and conditions; the guidance does not name one best model for every route. |
| Snow and ice | Start with an off-road or rally-tire car and prioritize control | Off-road and rally tires switch automatically to studded winter tires in the game; studded tires are also available as an upgrade-shop option for additional snow and ice grip. Xbox Wire’s seasonal driving tips | Seasonal conditions and route elevation still matter; the guidance does not say all tires provide equal grip. |
| General off-road exploration | Pick for the surface and obstacles you expect | Vehicle choice, tires, suspension, and driving style all affect how well a car handles different conditions, according to official guidance. | A race-oriented recommendation may sacrifice top speed or convenience in free roam. |
Why seasons change the best choice
FH4’s weekly seasons alter the routes rather than simply changing the scenery. Turn 10 Design Director Jon Knoles’ guidance, published by Xbox Wire, describes autumn fields as plowed, soft, and muddy, with more rain and slicker roads. Winter brings snow and ice, with deeper snow at higher northern elevations. Spring is more variable and can turn shallow riverbeds into deep streams. These conditions change which vehicle traits matter most.
- Autumn: expect soft or muddy fields and slick roads; prioritize stability and suitable tires.
- Winter: snow and ice, especially at higher elevations, reward grip and controlled steering.
- Spring: changing weather and potentially deep streams make clearance and vehicle type more important.
Knoles’ winter advice says, “all tires are good for all seasons, and will be enough to keep you on the roads if you remember to brake—and turn—for curves.” This is not a claim that tires offer equal grip; the same guidance identifies studded tires as an option for added snow and ice traction. Xbox Wire also notes that heavier or larger vehicles lose less speed than smaller, lighter ones when driving through some obstacles, which is relevant when a route includes water or rough terrain.

How to choose for a specific event
- Read the event restrictions. Check the eligible class and vehicle types first. A favorite car is no help if it does not qualify.
- Identify the main surface and obstacles. Dirt and rally events favor loose-surface balance; snow and ice call for grip and controlled inputs; deep-water cross-country sections favor suitable off-road vehicle types over low-slung cars.
- Choose control or speed based on the route. The Gymkhana 9 Focus RS RX’s reported steering and balance strengths suit dirt or winter racing, while its lower top speed may matter more in open exploration or a route where speed is decisive.
- Adjust upgrades and driving style to conditions. Official guidance points to tires and suspension as factors, alongside vehicle choice and how you drive. Brake and turn for curves rather than relying on tires alone.
- Reconsider the setup when the season or event changes. A car that suits muddy fields may be less appropriate for deep streams, and a snow-friendly setup does not establish a universal advantage across every off-road event.
Optional Any Terrain Car Pack vehicles
The Any Terrain Car Pack is optional downloadable content, not a requirement for off-road play generally. The Xbox Store listing says it requires Forza Horizon 4, supports PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and includes rally cars, UTVs, and SUVs. Its description calls out the Can-Am Maverick X RS Turbo R, Honda Civic Coupe GRC, Hoonigan Ford Escort Cosworth Group A, Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, and a Porsche 959 rally-raid car. The detailed inventory uses slightly different labels for the Can-Am and Porsche; the listing does not establish these as separate vehicles. Check the Xbox Store listing for the pack’s current availability in your region.
The pack’s inclusion of off-road-oriented vehicles does not make every included car the best pick for every event. Base your choice on the event rules, route, and conditions rather than DLC status alone.

Tuning: useful, but not a guaranteed winning setup
FH4 supports vehicle-specific tuning, and ForzaTune documents dirt/snow and off-road tune modes, including support for off-road trucks and buggies. Its change log says dirt and off-road tunes received slightly softer dampers. That establishes available tuning categories, not that any particular tune or setting is optimal.
Use tires and suspension as condition-dependent tuning considerations, then evaluate the result in the event you plan to drive. No exact suspension, differential, gearing, or tire-pressure values are established here as proven recommendations. ForzaTune’s documentation is available at ForzaTune.

The strongest supported single-car recommendation here is PC Gamer’s editorial pick for dirt, rally, and winter use: the Hoonigan Gymkhana 9 Ford Focus RS RX. That does not establish it as the best vehicle for cross-country, deep water, every class, or every seasonal route. Official advice instead emphasizes matching vehicle type, tires, suspension, and driving style to the conditions. No comprehensive comparison statistic or independently tested universal ranking is established by the cited sources.
