Best Olden Era Hero Skills: How to Reach an Elite Class

To unlock an elite class in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, choose one of the two elite options attached to your hero’s current class, learn that option’s five required skills, and raise every one of those skills to Expert. There is no universal “best” five-skill build: faction, class, elite option, level-up offers, and the needs of your map all matter.

What an elite class requires

Elite classes (called subclasses in some player references) are the final specialization choices for a hero class. Every base class has two elite-class options. Each option names a specific set of five skills. Promotion occurs only after all five required skills have reached Expert level; having four Expert skills and one Basic or Advanced skill is not enough.

The official Hero Class guide describes the unlock rule, while the individual class pages contain the exact requirement lists and the bonus granted by each elite option. Check the relevant class page in the current game build before selecting skills, because a generic build copied from another class can send level-up choices in the wrong direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Promotion also grants a strong bonus effect. That bonus is part of the decision, not an automatic reason to pursue the path: you may need to spend several level-up offers on skills that are less useful for your present army or map. Compare the eventual bonus with the opportunity cost of the required set.

Identify the hero’s class before choosing skills

Faction determines which pair of hero classes is available. The class then influences the skills that are likely to appear at level-up. The six faction pairs are:

Faction Might class Magic class General emphasis
Temple Knight Cleric Might emphasizes Attack and Defense; Magic emphasizes Spell Power and Knowledge.
Necropolis Death Knight Necromancer The same Might-versus-Magic split applies within this faction.
Grove Warden Druid Choose according to whether the hero’s role is primarily physical or spell-driven.
Hive Enforcer Herald Class determines the available specialization paths and likely skill offers.
Schism Oathkeeper Riftspeaker Inspect the class-specific elite requirements rather than using a faction-wide list.
Dungeon Overlord Warlock Physical and magical classes have different skill pools and elite options.

Might classes concentrate on Attack and Defense. Their exclusive Combat skill powers up Heroic Strike. Magic classes concentrate on Spell Power and Knowledge. Their exclusive Thaumaturgy skill allows two spell casts per round. Those exclusive skills are part of the class identity, but they do not replace the need to check the five skills for the elite option you want.

How hero skills and level-up offers work

Skills progress through three ranks: Basic, Advanced, and Expert. A skill must be Expert to count toward an elite-class requirement. Raising a skill one rank at a time therefore takes multiple level-up choices unless the hero begins with a higher rank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A secondary skill reference reports that heroes normally begin with a faction skill and one other regular skill; some signature heroes instead start with an advanced faction skill. A hero can have up to eight skills including the faction skill. At each level-up, the hero chooses one of three offers. Which skills can appear is influenced by class, so the offers are not a completely random draw from every skill in the game. These details come from a third-party reference and should be checked against the current build if a patch has changed the system. See the reference at Olden Era skills.

This has two practical consequences:

  • You cannot guarantee an elite class merely by writing down five desired skills. The game must actually offer those skills to your hero.
  • A skill that is excellent in isolation may still be a poor pick if it consumes a slot or level-up offer needed for the elite path that better fits your army.

Step-by-step route to an elite class

  1. Record the hero’s faction and base class. Open the hero information panel and verify whether the hero is on the Might or Magic side of the faction pair. Do not begin with the elite options from a different class.
  2. Open both elite options for that class. Write down the five required skills and the bonus attached to each option. The official class overview links to the class information; exact requirements are maintained on the individual class pages.
  3. Compare the two requirements with your intended role. Mark which skills improve the army, spells, or tactics you are already using. Also mark any requirement that would be a dead slot on the current map. A path with a slightly less attractive bonus can be better if its five skills arrive naturally and remain useful during the journey.
  4. Track current ranks, not just skill names. Create a five-line checklist for the chosen option: each line should show Basic, Advanced, or Expert. A skill is complete only at Expert.
  5. Evaluate every three-skill offer against the checklist. When a required skill is offered, take it if doing so does not create an immediate survival problem. If two required skills appear, prefer the one whose next rank is harder to obtain or whose effect helps the next battles.
  6. Keep the hero’s skill capacity in mind. The secondary reference describes a maximum of eight skills including the faction skill. Avoid filling available slots with unrelated skills when an elite path still needs room for its five requirements.
  7. Raise all five requirements to Expert. Do not stop when the skill names are present. The promotion condition checks the rank of every listed skill.
  8. Confirm the promotion and bonus. Once the complete set is Expert, the elite class should be awarded. Read the resulting bonus and update the hero’s battle plan; the elite effect can favor a different spell, unit formation, or attack pattern than the one used while leveling.

Choosing between the two elite paths

There is no complete, consistently sourced balance ranking for every elite option. The useful comparison is specific to your hero and map. Use the following criteria before committing:

Question What to examine Why it matters
Do the skills fit the role? Check whether the five requirements reinforce a physical, defensive, summoning, or spell-focused plan. You gain value from the requirements while leveling instead of paying only an opportunity cost.
Can this class obtain them reliably? Look at the skills that appear in class-specific offers and the skills already on the hero. Access is influenced by class; a theoretically strong path can arrive too late to matter.
What is the elite bonus? Read the exact bonus on the class page, including what it affects and when it applies. The bonus is the payoff for reaching five Expert skills.
What does the map demand? Consider the next fights, movement, economy, enemy damage types, and available spell support. A path that is ideal in a long campaign may be inefficient in a short or combat-heavy map.
What do you give up? Count level-up offers and skill slots that could have gone to immediate power. Promotion is a strategic investment, not a free upgrade.

Might paths

Might heroes are built around Attack and Defense, with Combat powering Heroic Strike. A Might elite option is most attractive when its required skills continue to improve the hero’s frontline plan and the bonus helps the army win decisive engagements. Do not assume that every Might path is interchangeable: the five-skill sets and elite bonuses differ by class.

Magic paths

Magic heroes are built around Spell Power and Knowledge, with Thaumaturgy enabling two spell casts per round. A Magic elite option should be judged by the spells you can actually cast, your available mana, and whether its required skills improve the hero before promotion. Two casts per round is a class feature, not a promise that every spell-focused elite path is optimal for every map.

Plan the skill budget before the next level-up

Make the requirement list a living worksheet rather than a one-time choice. Write each of the five skills in a separate row, record its current rank, and note whether the next offer would provide Basic, Advanced, or Expert progress. This prevents a common error: remembering that a skill was selected while forgetting that it still needs another rank before it counts.

The reported eight-skill maximum includes the faction skill. In practical terms, that leaves room for no more than seven other skills, so an elite route can consume most of the hero’s non-faction capacity. If the hero already has a regular skill and the chosen path needs five more, only one additional non-faction slot remains under that limit. That is not a reason to reject every useful side skill, but it is a reason to examine each permanent slot carefully.

Starting position matters too. A hero who begins with one of the required skills has less rank work ahead than a hero who starts with none. A signature hero with an advanced faction skill may have a stronger opening but still needs the exact five-skill set for promotion. Starting power and elite progress are related decisions, not interchangeable ones.

How to judge a difficult offer

When none of the three choices advances the chosen path, first ask what the next battle requires. Immediate damage, defense, movement, or spell access can be worth more than preserving a theoretical timetable. If one offer is a required skill and another is a short-term upgrade, compare the skill’s current rank, the number of remaining ranks, and the likelihood that it will reappear. The class system makes availability uneven, so postponing a requirement is a gamble rather than a guaranteed later choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the hero is losing battles while waiting, change the plan. An elite bonus only helps after all five requirements are Expert; it cannot retroactively protect the army during the levels spent reaching it. Conversely, if the map supplies frequent fights and the required skills already support the army, accepting a slower immediate upgrade can be a rational investment.

When can you unlock one?

The official material confirms the requirement and the influence of class on skill availability, but it does not publish a universal probability or guaranteed level for elite promotion.

A third-party classes guide estimates level 14 as the theoretical earliest unlock if the hero starts with one required skill and receives exactly the needed choices at later level-ups. The same guide places many practical unlocks around levels 16–20 or later and notes that some skills can have very low class-specific chances. These are unofficial estimates, not a game rule or a promise for a particular hero, map, or patch. The guide is available at Olden Era classes and subclasses.

Your actual timing depends on several variables:

  • Whether the hero starts with one of the required skills, and at what rank.
  • How often the other required skills appear in the three-choice offers.
  • Whether you must take an emergency combat or movement skill to survive.
  • How many battles and level-ups the map provides before its decisive objectives.
  • Whether a patch has changed class weighting, skill availability, or promotion behavior.

Plan for the path to arrive late rather than building an army that is only viable after promotion. If the map is ending or the hero is struggling, take the strongest immediate skill instead of forcing an elite requirement.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Using a universal five-skill list

There is no universal list. Elite requirements belong to a specific class and elite option. Reopen the class information and replace any checklist copied from another faction or class.

Counting a skill before it reaches Expert

Basic and Advanced ranks do not satisfy the promotion condition. Record the rank beside every requirement and continue selecting that skill until Expert.

Ignoring class-based availability

Class influences what appears in level-up offers. If a required skill has not appeared, do not conclude that the list is wrong; it may simply have a low class-specific chance. Reassess whether the path is still realistic on the current map.

Filling all skill slots too early

If the eight-skill maximum reported by the secondary reference applies to your build, unrelated skills can crowd out a requirement. Before accepting a nonessential skill, check how many slots remain and which requirements are still missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chasing the bonus after the map has changed

A strong elite effect cannot repair an army that loses battles while waiting for it. If the next objective demands immediate damage, defense, mobility, or spell access, select the level-up that solves that problem unless the required skill also provides it.

Treating timing estimates as guarantees

Level 14 earliest and levels 16–20 or later are estimates from a third-party guide. They do not establish a fixed unlock level. Use them as planning ranges only, and expect different results from different starting skills, offers, maps, and patches.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you confirmed the hero’s faction and exact base class?
  • Have you opened both elite options for that class?
  • Have you written down all five requirements for the option you want?
  • Do you know the bonus granted at promotion?
  • Are the five skills useful for the hero’s current role and map?
  • Which requirements are already present, and at what rank?
  • How many skill slots and level-up choices remain?
  • Can the hero survive while waiting for the remaining skills?
  • Are you treating timing numbers as unofficial estimates rather than guarantees?

Bottom line for “best” skills

The best Olden Era skills are the ones that both strengthen your hero now and complete a realistic elite path later. Start with the hero’s class, compare its two five-skill options, prioritize requirements that match the map, and raise every required skill to Expert. The class system makes elite promotion a targeted plan with uncertain offers, not a fixed build order that works for every hero.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I unlock an elite class in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era?

Choose one of the two elite options for the hero’s current class, learn that option’s five listed skills, and raise every one to Expert. Promotion is awarded only when the complete five-skill set meets the required rank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which skills should I choose to reach an elite class?

Use the exact five-skill list for your hero’s class and selected elite option. There is no faction-wide or universal list, and class-based offers affect which requirements are likely to appear.

Do Basic or Advanced skills count toward promotion?

No. Every required skill must be Expert. Having the correct skill name at Basic or Advanced is progress, but it does not complete the elite-class condition.

What is the earliest level for an elite class?

A third-party guide estimates level 14 as theoretically earliest under unusually favorable choices. It places many practical unlocks around levels 16–20 or later. These figures are unofficial estimates, not guaranteed levels.

Can every hero reliably reach an elite class?

Not necessarily. Class influences skill offers, some requirements may have low class-specific chances, and the map may end before all five skills reach Expert. Treat promotion as a plan with uncertainty rather than an automatic milestone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I take an unrelated skill to survive?

Yes, when immediate survival requires it. The elite bonus arrives only after all five requirements are Expert, so do not sacrifice the army for a timetable. Reassess the path if required skills continue to be unavailable.

The Bottom Line

Choose the class-specific path whose five Expert requirements fit both your hero and your map. Track ranks and slots, compare the two bonuses, and treat level 14 and 16–20 timing figures as unofficial planning estimates.
