The right online teleprompter depends on how you capture your stream. For a solo OBS host, a narrow floating prompt near the webcam is often the simplest fit—but use a camera or selected-window source rather than capturing the whole display, or the prompt may appear in your broadcast. Choose a voice-following tool if you want the text to adapt to your delivery, a phone-controlled setup for multiple displays, or physical teleprompter hardware when keeping your eyes directly on the lens matters most.
This is a feature-and-workflow guide based on vendor documentation, not a controlled head-to-head test. The recommendations below are by use case, not measured performance.

These labels describe documented feature fit; they do not mean one product was proven better in a comparative performance test. Vendor-listed prices and trial offers can vary by region and change over time.
How to keep the prompt out of an OBS stream
The capture source matters as much as the teleprompter. ScriptCue and Cuefyr documentation both warn that a floating prompt can appear when OBS captures the entire display. Their documentation says selected-window or game capture avoids that, and Cuefyr also identifies camera capture as an option that leaves its prompt out.

- Place the prompt near the camera. Make it a narrow strip directly below or beside the lens so reading requires less eye movement. Cuefyr specifically recommends a narrow window close to the lens.
- Choose a capture source deliberately. In OBS, use your camera source or capture only the target application or game when that matches your scene. Avoid whole-display capture if the prompt is visible on that display.
- Check what viewers will see. Make a private recording or inspect the OBS preview with the prompt running. Confirm both that the text is absent from the program output and that other private windows or notes are not exposed.
- Test the browser and device you will actually use. Floating Teleprompter documents its always-on-top window for desktop Chrome and Edge; on phones and other browsers, it falls back to fullscreen. Do not assume the desktop behavior carries over.
OBS Teleprompter’s available documentation does not establish capture exclusion. Treat that as something to verify on your own system, rather than assuming an overlay will remain private.
Choose a scrolling method you can deliver naturally
Fixed-speed auto-scroll
Tools such as Floating Teleprompter and OBS Teleprompter document adjustable auto-scroll. A fixed speed is straightforward for rehearsed narration, but it will not automatically account for a pause, emphasis, or an improvised aside. Practice at your actual speaking pace and make sure you can adjust or stop the scroll when needed.

Manual or timed scrolling
Castrix lists manual, timed, and voice modes. Manual control can suit a short script or a presenter with a clicker or operator; timed scrolling can help with a rehearsed run-of-show. Either can become awkward if the delivery changes, so rehearse transitions and pauses rather than judging the setup only on a smooth read-through.
Voice-following scroll
Cuefyr and Elgato describe voice-following features. A product description is not evidence of recognition accuracy or latency in your setup. Test with the same microphone selected in the prompter and OBS, and include pauses, ad-libs, names, and transitions in your rehearsal. Elgato lists Voice Sync requirements of an NVIDIA RTX 2060 or newer on Windows, or Apple M1 or newer on macOS.

When a physical teleprompter is worth considering
A software prompt in a separate window is usually the lighter setup. Physical hardware makes more sense when eye-line placement is the priority: Elgato Prompter combines a 9-inch display with beamsplitter glass and supports webcam or smartphone mounting. Its Camera Hub software and Stream Deck controls are documented features, but the device is a hardware purchase rather than a browser-only tool. A physical display is optional; software prompting does not require one.
Protect your script and verify the setup before going live
- Confirm capture privacy: check the final OBS program output, not just the desktop, for prompt text and unrelated windows.
- Confirm browser behavior: test floating, fullscreen, or transparent modes on the exact browser and device you will stream from.
- Confirm microphone selection: for voice-following, check that the prompter and OBS use the intended mic.
- Rehearse variable delivery: practice pauses, ad-libs, sponsor reads, and moving between sections using the scroll mode you intend to use live.
- Understand storage claims: Floating Teleprompter’s vendor says scripts stay in local browser storage, but that statement is not an independent privacy audit. Check the product’s own current privacy information if script confidentiality is important.
Costs and trials to check
Among the prices documented here, ScriptCue lists £9/month or £59/year, and Castrix lists a seven-day full-feature trial followed by $8/month or $80/year for Individual. Those are vendor-listed terms, not a guarantee of current availability in every region. Floating Teleprompter is described by its vendor as free; current conditions should still be checked on the product page. Current prices and program terms for CloudPrompter are not established here.
