Video Transcoding Explained: What It Is and When You Need It for Streaming

Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media to change compatibility or create new outputs. Here’s when streaming needs it—and when streamcopy is enough.

Video transcoding decodes an encoded video or audio stream and encodes it again, usually to change its format, properties or quality options. You need it when the source will not work for the destination, when you must transform it, or when viewers need multiple versions for adaptive streaming. If the source already fits and needs no processing, streamcopy avoids an unnecessary, potentially lossy re-encode.

What is video transcoding?

Transcoding is a two-part process: decode compressed media, then encode it again. The new output can use a different codec or container, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, audio configuration or other settings. It differs from simply copying encoded packets unchanged.

For example, a streaming workflow might take one high-quality source and create several output versions at different resolutions and bitrates. A compatible player can offer or select a version suited to a viewer’s device and available bandwidth.

When do you need to transcode a video for streaming?

  • Codec compatibility: The destination or playback devices cannot decode the source codec.
  • Changed media properties: You need to resize, change frame rate or otherwise alter the video.
  • Filters or audio processing: The workflow requires deinterlacing, overlays, audio adjustments or another processing step.
  • Adaptive quality: You need multiple resolutions or bitrates so viewers can use different quality levels.

Transcoding does not by itself guarantee smooth playback. Results also depend on encoding choices, packaging, the player, bandwidth and the rest of the delivery workflow.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When is streamcopy the better choice?

Use streamcopy when the existing encoded streams already meet the target workflow’s requirements and you do not need filters or other transformations. Streamcopy passes the encoded media through without decoding and re-encoding it, avoiding that conversion’s extra compute work and generation loss.

The FFmpeg documentation recommends transcoding only when needed because encoding is computationally expensive and, in most cases, lossy. Its documentation covers both transcoding and streamcopy: FFmpeg documentation: Streamcopy.

What is the difference between transcoding and encoding?

Encoding compresses media into an encoded format. Transcoding starts with already encoded media, decodes it, and encodes a new version. The new encoding may keep similar settings or change them; the defining point is that the source is decoded and re-encoded.

That extra processing can be useful, but it is not free: it takes compute and can reduce quality. If you only need to move compatible encoded streams into a workflow unchanged, streamcopy is the alternative.

How transcoding, packaging and delivery fit together

These stages are related but not interchangeable. Transcoding changes encoded media and can create renditions. Packaging organizes media and related information into a format a streaming player can consume. Delivery makes the resulting presentation and media available to viewers.

HLS and DASH are examples of streaming formats used in delivery workflows. MPEG describes DASH as a standard for live and on-demand delivery over existing internet infrastructure: MPEG-DASH overview.

Do you need transcoding for live streaming?

Not always. If your live source already matches what the destination and viewers need, the workflow may not require transcoding. Conversion becomes useful when the input must be changed or when the service needs to generate multiple output renditions for different viewer conditions.

Managed live workflows can accept an incoming stream and produce packaged outputs. For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API describes converting SRT or RTMP input into HLS or DASH output saved to Cloud Storage: Google Cloud Live Stream API overview. That is one documented example, not a requirement for every live stream.

Live conversion and on-demand jobs are different workloads

Live streams

A live workflow processes incoming media to produce outputs for ongoing delivery. Its design must fit the live use case; an asynchronous job that finishes later is not a substitute when viewers need a current stream.

On-demand video

Cloud transcoding for on-demand media commonly works as a submitted job: the service processes a source and writes output files for later use. Google Cloud’s Transcoder API is asynchronous and does not provide strong timing guarantees, so it is not suited to a workflow where an interactive user is waiting for immediate completion. It documents outputs including MP4, HLS and DASH: Google Cloud Transcoder API overview.

Local software or a managed service?

There is no universal winner. Choose based on whether you need live conversion or later batch processing, how much control you need over codecs and filters, who will maintain the compute and pipeline, how time-sensitive the result is, and which output formats, renditions, captions or audio handling you require.

  • Local software: Can suit workflows needing hands-on control over processing and configuration; you provide and maintain the computing environment.
  • Managed cloud processing: Can suit workflows that benefit from a service handling submitted jobs or live processing, along with storage and delivery components. Check the documented timing, formats and configuration against your actual requirements.

Examples include Cloudflare Stream’s documented upload, encoding to multiple resolutions, adaptive-bitrate delivery and distribution workflow (Cloudflare Stream documentation), and AWS’s documented CloudFront and AWS Media Services video workflow, which uses an encoder such as MediaConvert to format and package media (AWS video-on-demand solution overview). These are examples of capabilities, not a price or performance comparison.

What transcoding means for a 24/7 YouTube loop

A pre-recorded video played continuously as a YouTube live stream is a different need from creating multiple adaptive renditions for viewers. You may need transcoding if the source or workflow requires conversion or processing; looping a compatible uploaded video does not, by itself, mean it must be re-encoded. Keep rights and YouTube’s applicable policies in mind when choosing material to stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube. See StreamNeo or the copyright safety checklist before setting up a loop. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Common transcoding problems and fixes

  • The destination rejects or cannot play the output: Check codec and container compatibility for the destination and playback devices; convert only what is incompatible.
  • Output looks worse than the source: Re-encoding is often lossy. If no conversion is required, use streamcopy; otherwise review the output settings and avoid unnecessary generations of re-encoding.
  • Processing takes too long for an interactive workflow: Confirm whether the service is asynchronous and whether it offers a timing guarantee. Google Cloud documents its Transcoder API as asynchronous without strong timing guarantees.
  • Viewers cannot switch quality or playback is not adapting as expected: Verify that the workflow actually produces the intended renditions, packages them for the player, and delivers them correctly. Transcoding alone does not ensure adaptive playback.

What to check before choosing a workflow

  • Does the target support the source codec and container?
  • Do you need resizing, deinterlacing, overlays, audio processing or another transformation?
  • Is one output enough, or do viewers need multiple bitrate and resolution renditions?
  • Is the job live and time-sensitive, or can it run asynchronously for later use?
  • Which output packaging and delivery path does the player require?
  • Can you preserve the source and use streamcopy when conversion is unnecessary?
