Stride is the closest complete replacement for BRUTAL if you want to remain in C# while gaining an editor, asset pipeline and engine-level rendering. Choose MonoGame if you want a code-first C# framework and are willing to build your own architecture. Choose Godot for the broadest integrated open-source workflow, or Bevy if Rust and data-oriented design matter more than C# compatibility. Stay with BRUTAL when direct native/Vulkan control and owning the entire engine stack are the goal.

Which BRUTAL alternative should you choose?

What you need Best fit Why
A complete C# engine with an editor Stride Visual Game Studio editor, 2D/3D workflows, cross-platform focus, VR orientation and MIT licensing.
A code-first C# framework MonoGame Provides a cross-platform .NET foundation while leaving your scene, entity, tooling and architecture decisions to you.
An integrated open-source engine for most project types Godot Mature editor, community-driven development, 2D and 3D support, and one-click export targets across desktop, mobile, web and consoles.
Rust and data-oriented ECS-style development Bevy Code-centric Rust engine designed around data-driven development, with an active but rapidly changing API.
Maximum low-level control BRUTAL Native interop, Vulkan and replaceable subsystems let you build a game or your own engine without imposed editor or scene architecture.

What BRUTAL is—and why that changes the comparison

BRUTAL is an open-source C# framework for making games or building a separate game engine. It is not a conventional editor-first engine. Its purpose is to provide a low-level foundation while leaving major architectural decisions to the developer.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The framework includes a custom C# interop layer for native APIs and libraries, mathematics, memory management, strings, collections, job scheduling, logging and localization. It also supplies bindings for Vulkan, GLFW, Dear ImGui, FMOD, RakNet, Jolt and Box2D. You can add other NuGet packages and write the missing layers yourself.

That design deliberately excludes an editor, scene graph and renderer. The project does not plan to add those general-purpose engine layers. In the maintainers’ words, “BRUTAL is a framework. You can make a game directly with it, or use it as the foundation for a separate engine.” They also state that “BRUTAL is not trying to be a general-purpose engine.”

Consequently, an alternative should not be judged only by graphics features. The important questions are whether it supplies the tooling BRUTAL omits, whether it keeps your preferred language, how much architecture remains yours to implement, which platforms it targets and how much control you retain over the runtime.

How the main options differ

Option Language Abstraction Editor and built-in workflow Distinctive strength Main cost
BRUTAL C# Low-level framework No editor, scene graph or renderer Native/Vulkan control and stack ownership You build most engine architecture and tools
Stride C# Full engine Game Studio editor and integrated 2D/3D workflow Closest complete C# replacement More engine opinions and less need to own every subsystem
MonoGame C#/.NET Framework Code-driven; architecture is yours Familiar C# with broad platform intent You assemble scenes, entities, tools and production conventions
Godot Godot’s engine model Full engine Integrated editor and project workflow Broad 2D/3D export coverage Migration to Godot’s architecture and conventions
Bevy Rust Data-oriented engine Code-centric workflow with examples and community resources Rust and ECS-style development Learning Rust and absorbing breaking API changes

Stride: the best complete C# replacement

What you get

Stride is a free, open-source, cross-platform C# engine for 2D and 3D games and other interactive content on desktop and VR. Its runtime and editor are open source, and the project documents MIT licensing. The editor, called Game Studio, supplies the visual workflow that BRUTAL intentionally leaves out.

For a conventional production, that means you can work with an engine-level rendering and asset workflow instead of designing those systems first. Stride is therefore the most direct answer to the question, “Is there a C# engine like BRUTAL but with an editor?”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Stride is the right move

  • Your team is committed to C# and wants to keep that language throughout gameplay and engine-side code.
  • You need visual scene and asset authoring rather than a blank framework.
  • You are making a conventional 2D or 3D desktop or VR project and prefer integrated systems over composing them yourself.
  • You want an MIT-licensed open-source engine that can be forked or inspected.

Trade-offs and checks

Stride is less minimal than BRUTAL. Its editor, runtime and rendering choices accelerate production but also establish more of the architecture for you. Before committing, verify the current release’s platform support, graphics requirements and compatibility with your target deployment; those details can change independently of the project’s general C# and MIT positioning.

MonoGame: the closest framework-style alternative

What you get

MonoGame is an open-source, cross-platform .NET framework for creating games. Its official project description highlights C# development for desktop PCs, consoles and mobile devices. Like BRUTAL, it gives you a programming foundation rather than requiring you to adopt a complete editor-centered engine model.

  • ANTI-STATIC: great for cleaning and wiping down your gaming gear and electronics leaving behind no visible residue
  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

When MonoGame fits

Choose MonoGame when you want to retain C#, write gameplay and engine code directly, and define your own conventions. It is a strong middle ground: more established as a game-development framework than a bare native layer, but less prescriptive than a full editor engine.

A MonoGame project can use your own scene representation, entity-component model, rendering abstraction, asset database, build scripts and tools. That flexibility is valuable for teams whose product is itself a custom engine or whose game does not map cleanly to a general-purpose editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you must build

  • Scene, entity or object lifetime conventions.
  • Editor and level-authoring tools, if designers need visual authoring.
  • Content import, build and versioning rules suited to your assets.
  • Higher-level rendering, physics, animation and networking architecture as required.

Compared with Stride or Godot, expect more engineering before content creators can work efficiently. Confirm the exact platform targets and content pipeline your project needs instead of assuming that every platform listed by the framework has identical tooling or deployment requirements.

Godot: the best general-purpose open-source engine

What you get

Godot is a free, open-source, community-driven 2D and 3D engine. Its documentation lists one-click export targets for Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, the web and consoles. It offers the integrated editor and project workflow most people expect when they say “game engine.”

When Godot is the better alternative

Godot is the practical default when your priority is producing a game with a complete editor, asset workflow and broad export coverage rather than preserving BRUTAL-level control. It is especially compelling for teams that want designers and artists to work inside a shared project environment instead of waiting for programmers to build internal tools.

Its 2D and 3D workflows also make it suitable when a project may change scope or presentation during development. You can begin with a focused 2D game without committing to a custom renderer, or build a 3D project without first implementing the foundational editor systems BRUTAL omits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes from BRUTAL

Moving to Godot means adopting its project structure, scene and node conventions, editor workflow and runtime architecture. That is the reason it can shorten production, but it also means less freedom to replace every subsystem. Check the current Godot version and the supported export path for your specific target, particularly when consoles or platform-specific plugins are involved.

Bevy: the Rust and data-oriented choice

What you get

Bevy is an open-source game engine written in Rust. Its introduction describes it as a simple, data-driven engine and says the project is still in development. The repository emphasizes community learning resources and examples alongside the engine itself.

Why BRUTAL developers consider it

Bevy appeals to developers who like BRUTAL’s code-centric, build-your-own-stack spirit but want Rust and a data-oriented ECS-style approach. It is not a drop-in C# replacement: language, tooling, libraries and team hiring all change. The benefit is a modern Rust ecosystem and an architecture that encourages systems to operate on data rather than tightly coupled object hierarchies.

Version stability is a production concern

Bevy states that releases arrive approximately every three months and may contain breaking API changes. For a long-lived project, pin the engine version in source control, keep upgrade work as an explicit maintenance task and avoid treating every release as a free, riskless update. Prototype against the exact version you intend to ship with before building a large content pipeline.

Stay with BRUTAL when control is the product requirement

Replacing BRUTAL is not automatically an upgrade. Its missing editor and renderer are deliberate. Stay with it when your team wants direct native access, Vulkan bindings, custom memory and job systems, or the ability to decide how every engine layer fits together.

BRUTAL is also a sensible foundation when the project itself is an engine, a specialized simulation or a game whose requirements do not fit a general-purpose scene model. You can use the provided bindings and utilities while adding only the subsystems your project needs.

The cost of that freedom

  • Programmers must design and maintain the renderer, scene or entity model and editor-equivalent tools.
  • Content pipelines, hot reload, debugging views and production automation become your responsibility.
  • Integration decisions across graphics, physics, audio, networking and platform layers are yours to test and support.

Choose BRUTAL with a written plan for those systems. If the team cannot fund that engineering, a complete engine such as Stride or Godot usually reduces schedule risk.

A practical decision process

  1. Decide whether you need an editor. If designers require visual scene and asset authoring now, start with Stride or Godot. If the answer is no, continue to the framework choices.
  2. Decide whether C# is non-negotiable. C# points to Stride or MonoGame; Rust points to Bevy; Godot requires accepting its engine workflow and supported scripting options.
  3. Define who owns architecture. Select MonoGame or BRUTAL when your team wants to build the scene, entity and tool layers. Select Stride, Godot or Bevy when you want more engine structure supplied.
  4. List target platforms by release, not aspiration. Record desktop, mobile, web, VR and console requirements separately, then verify the current export and licensing conditions for each candidate.
  5. Prototype the riskiest subsystem. Test the actual renderer, input, content build, deployment target and debugging workflow before migrating a full project.
  6. Freeze versions and licenses. Pin the engine or framework revision, preserve license notices and review attribution obligations before distribution.

Licensing and attribution considerations

BRUTAL uses an MIT-based license with attribution requirements. Those requirements include credit, displaying the logo before gameplay and including a NOTICE file, subject to the project’s stated waivers and commercial-license arrangements. Treat those obligations as part of your release checklist rather than assuming that “open source” means “no notices required.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stride documents MIT licensing. Even with permissive licensing, retain the applicable copyright and license text and check the current repository terms for bundled dependencies. MonoGame, Godot and Bevy also have their own license files and third-party components; review the exact revision you ship, especially if you fork, redistribute binaries or add plugins.

Common migration mistakes

Choosing by language alone

Two C# projects can have radically different workloads. Stride supplies an editor and engine systems; MonoGame leaves architecture largely to you. Select based on the tools your team must operate every day, not only on whether the code compiles in C#.

Underestimating tool development

A framework may make a first prototype quick while making the hundredth asset expensive. Count level editing, prefab or template handling, import validation, debugging overlays and build automation before deciding that a low-level option is cheaper.

Assuming platform labels guarantee shipping readiness

“Cross-platform” does not prove that your exact renderer, input stack, store requirements, certification process or content pipeline works unchanged. Test a minimal build on every release platform and document exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring API churn

Bevy explicitly warns that its roughly quarterly releases can break APIs. Similar compatibility checks are prudent for any fast-moving open-source project. Pin versions, maintain a reproducible build and schedule upgrades instead of allowing them to arrive accidentally through dependency resolution.

Forgetting attribution

Open-source distribution still carries obligations. For BRUTAL, plan the required credit, logo placement and NOTICE file early enough that they do not become a launch-day scramble.

Bottom line by project profile

  • Solo or small C# team needing a finished editor workflow: start with Stride.
  • C# programmers building a distinctive engine or renderer: evaluate MonoGame before moving to BRUTAL; it may provide enough foundation with less native-layer work.
  • Team prioritizing broad integrated 2D/3D production: choose Godot and accept its higher-level architecture.
  • Rust team embracing data-oriented design: choose Bevy, pin the version and budget for migrations.
  • Engine specialists requiring native/Vulkan control: keep BRUTAL and treat editor, renderer and tooling development as planned product work.

The closest open-source replacement depends on what you are replacing. Stride replaces BRUTAL’s missing engine layers while preserving C#. MonoGame preserves the framework mindset. Godot replaces the low-level foundation with a complete general-purpose workflow. Bevy changes both language and programming model. BRUTAL remains the right answer when the freedom to build those choices yourself is the requirement.
