Why OBS is the best general-purpose choice
OBS is free, open-source recording and live-streaming software. Its project describes capture, compositing, encoding, recording, and streaming as core functions. That makes it a flexible choice if a YouTube video needs more than a single desktop capture—for example, a game window, a webcam, overlays, and microphone narration in a composed scene. The trade-off is configuration: a first recording means choosing sources, audio routing, canvas and output dimensions, and recording settings. OBS’s help portal points new recorders toward Simple output mode and presets, a reasonable starting point for a basic tutorial. The official site lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer; check the current download page for current requirements and Linux installation instructions, which can vary by distribution.

Set up OBS for a screen-recorded YouTube video
1. Build a scene and add the sources you need
- Install OBS from its official download page and open it. If the first-run setup offers the Auto-Configuration Wizard, you can use it as a starting point, then review the settings before recording.
- In the Scenes panel, create a scene for the video. In Sources, add a capture source for the game, application, or display you intend to show. The exact source choices and capture behavior depend on your operating system and application.
- Add a microphone or other audio input if you want narration. Check the OBS audio mixer while speaking: the microphone meter should respond, and should not remain muted or consistently hit its maximum.
- Make a short test recording and play it back. Confirm the correct screen is visible, narration is audible, and any system or game sound is balanced with your voice.
2. Choose output settings and a recording format
For a straightforward first setup, OBS’s help guidance recommends Simple output mode and presets. There is no universally correct quality setting: higher-quality and lossless options can create much larger files and use more system resources. Match the output dimensions to the video you plan to publish and what your computer can record smoothly; verify the result with a short local test rather than assuming a setting will suit every system.
For the recording container, OBS recommends MKV when resilience to an unexpected stop matters. Its guidance says an interrupted MKV recording will not corrupt the whole file, while MP4 or MOV generally offer better compatibility with editing software and upload workflows but may be unrecoverable if writing is interrupted. OBS can remux a completed MKV recording to MP4 from within the application. This is a reliability-versus-compatibility choice, not a guarantee against every failure mode. 3. Record, review, and remux if needed
- Start with a short test, then review both picture and sound before recording a full session.
- When ready, start recording in OBS and confirm it is running before beginning the gameplay or demonstration.
- Stop the recording normally when finished. If you recorded to MKV and your editor or upload workflow needs MP4, use OBS’s remux feature rather than changing the original file extension.
- Check the final file in your editor or playback app before deleting the source recording.
OBS documents high-quality, indistinguishable-quality, lossless, and same-as-stream recording presets. Lossless can produce very large files and may affect performance; higher quality settings can also increase file size and hardware demands. Choose Kdenlive when editing is the main job
Kdenlive’s 26.08 manual documents ScreenGrab capture through FFmpeg. That can be convenient if capture belongs within an editing workflow, but the manual flags a possible crash with its x246-with-audio capture setting. Consult the Kdenlive capture documentation for the documented caveat and workflow.
Recordings for YouTube: practical checks
- Review the whole capture chain. A screen recorder can capture the wrong display, omit an application, or record a muted input. Check the short test file rather than relying only on live meters.
- Allow for file size and hardware load. More demanding quality settings, especially lossless recording, can produce very large files and affect system performance.
- Keep source material and rights in mind. Recording software does not grant permission to publish game footage, music, or other third-party material. Check the relevant rights and YouTube policies for the material in your video.
- Keep an interrupted recording’s container in mind. OBS’s recommendation of MKV is intended to reduce the risk that an unexpected stop corrupts the whole recording; it does not ensure every file survives every failure.
Troubleshooting common recording problems
The recording has no microphone audio
Check that the intended microphone is selected as an input in OBS, that it is not muted in the mixer, and that its meter moves while you speak. Make another short recording and listen to the file; a visible meter alone does not confirm the finished recording contains the expected sound.

The video shows the wrong screen or application
Review the capture source in the scene and select the intended display or window. Capture options and behavior depend on the operating system and application, so confirm the result in a short test before recording a long session.
The file is too large or recording affects performance
Try a less demanding recording-quality preset and make another short test. OBS notes that lossless recording can generate very large files and may affect performance; higher-quality settings can also increase file size and resource use.

An MP4 recording was interrupted
OBS warns that MP4 or MOV files may be unrecoverable if writing is interrupted. For future recordings, consider MKV, then remux a completed file to MP4 in OBS if your editing or upload workflow needs that format.
Kdenlive capture crashes with audio
The Kdenlive 26.08 manual cautions that screen capture using the x246-with-audio setting may crash. Consult its capture documentation and use another capture workflow if that setting is unreliable for your setup.
