For a headless, do-it-yourself 24/7 YouTube stream, FFmpeg is the clearest open-source building block. OBS Studio is better suited to a graphical encoder and scene workflow, while Stream247 offers a purpose-built headless relay with a dashboard. None is established as universally most reliable: the available documentation describes features, not controlled performance comparisons.
Which tool fits your workflow?
| Option | How it works | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Upload prerecorded videos, add a YouTube stream key once, and run a looping stream from the cloud. | Creators who want an always-on YouTube stream without maintaining a computer or server. | It is a hosted service, not open-source software; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. |
| FFmpeg | A command-line media tool can loop local video and audio files and send an RTMP stream. A community example runs it on an Ubuntu VPS and uses systemd restart behavior. | People comfortable scripting and managing a headless Linux host. | You configure the workflow and handle host availability, monitoring, and recovery. The cited example does not establish minimum server specifications. |
| OBS Studio | A graphical encoder with scenes and streaming configuration. The OBS Project describes it as open-source software under GPLv2 and free for commercial use. | Operators who prefer a desktop interface or want a scene-based workflow. | A 24/7 stream depends on the computer, network, and encoder remaining operational; OBS documents connection and bitrate-related dropped-frame troubleshooting. |
| Stream247 | Its repository describes a headless relay with a web dashboard, looping YouTube playlists or videos, direct HLS URLs, and RTMP/RTMPS destinations including YouTube Live. Listed controls include resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder, and shuffle. | People seeking a dashboard around a headless relay. | Repository descriptions are not independent tests. Check project maintenance and confirm its input sources and controls suit your setup. |
StreamNeo is #1 if your priority is keeping prerecorded video live without operating your own host: it runs from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Choose a tool by the work you want to own
- Choose FFmpeg for command-line control and a scripted local-file workflow.
- Choose OBS Studio if a graphical encoder and scene workflow matter more than headless operation.
- Evaluate Stream247 if its dashboard and listed input options match your needs; verify project activity and behavior yourself.
- Choose StreamNeo if you prefer a managed cloud loop over maintaining a running PC or VPS.
What you need before starting a YouTube Live stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow is to create or select a stream in Live Control Room, copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder, start sending content, then check the preview and live state. Treat the stream key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not put it in a public repository or share it in screenshots.
- Create or select the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the intended one.
- Get the ingestion details. Copy the stream URL and key provided for the selected stream. Use the matching ingestion protocol and enter both values in your encoder.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Confirm YouTube receives a preview and reports the stream as healthy before relying on it for an extended broadcast.
- Monitor both ends. Watch the encoder process and host as well as YouTube’s stream status; a dashboard or platform health signal does not restart a failed process by itself.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that archive behavior applies to broadcasts longer than 12 hours.

RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS are not interchangeable settings
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS ingestion, along with health states and configuration issue reporting. Health details can flag unsupported codecs, bitrate or sample-rate problems, and other setup issues. For a typical FFmpeg or OBS RTMP workflow, follow the encoder settings and ingestion details YouTube provides; HLS-specific segment rules do not apply to that setup.
If you deliberately choose HLS, YouTube’s HLS guidance requires HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends video in segments.

Set up a DIY 24/7 relay
Prepare the media and the host
Keep the source videos on a machine or hosted server that can remain available. The documented FFmpeg deployment example uses an Ubuntu VPS, local media files, RTMP output, and systemd restart behavior; it is an example, not a verified universal recipe. Your host also needs sufficient network capacity and encoding capability for the chosen workflow. The cited sources do not establish minimum CPU, memory, GPU, bandwidth, or hosting cost figures.
- Check that every file is readable and that video and audio play as intended.
- For a playlist, decide how files should be ordered and whether transitions or audio continuity matter.
- Keep the stream key out of source control, public logs, and shared configuration files.
- Decide how you will notice a stopped process, failed network connection, or unhealthy YouTube ingest.
Use FFmpeg for a scripted relay
FFmpeg is a flexible building block, but exact command flags depend on the files, whether they need transcoding, and the stream settings YouTube accepts. The documented community example establishes a local-file loop sent to RTMP and managed by systemd; it does not establish one command or bitrate that fits every channel. Start with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the source media’s properties rather than copying a setting blindly.

- Install FFmpeg on the host and make the video and audio files available to the account that will run the service.
- Configure a looping input or playlist and an RTMP output using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Protect the key as a secret.
- Choose output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that YouTube accepts and that your connection can sustain. If you transcode, encoding load depends on the media and selected settings; no minimum hardware figure is established here.
- Run the process and verify YouTube’s preview and health status. If YouTube reports a configuration issue, inspect the indicated codec, bitrate, sample rate, or other flagged setting.
- For unattended operation, run the relay under a service manager such as systemd and configure restart behavior. Also arrange monitoring: restarting a process is not the same as confirming the stream recovered successfully.
Use OBS Studio for a graphical workflow
OBS Studio is open-source software developed by volunteer contributors and is distributed under GPLv2; the OBS Project says it is free for commercial use. It can suit an operator who wants to configure sources and scenes in a graphical interface, but continuous operation still depends on the host computer and connection.
- Open OBS and add the prerecorded media as a source in the scene you intend to stream.
- Open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service, and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. Do not reveal or publish the key.
- Set the output and video options to values supported by YouTube and appropriate for your media and connection. OBS’s official help covers streaming connection settings and bitrate-related dropped frames; there is no one bitrate established here for all resolutions and source files.
- Start streaming, then check the YouTube preview and health information. Keep the computer awake and OBS running for the duration of the broadcast.
Consider Stream247 for a dashboard-led relay
Stream247’s repository describes a headless relay that can loop a YouTube playlist or video, accept direct HLS URLs, and send to RTMP or RTMPS destinations including YouTube Live. It lists resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, encoder, and shuffle controls. Review the repository’s current setup instructions, maintenance activity, and input requirements before depending on it for an unattended broadcast; the feature list is not a verified reliability test.

Keep a DIY stream running and recover it
A 24/7 relay is a chain: the host must stay available, the media must remain accessible, the encoder must keep running, the network must reach YouTube, and YouTube must accept the ingest. A systemd restart policy can relaunch a process after some failures, but you still need a way to detect whether the stream is actually back. YouTube’s health information can help diagnose ingest configuration issues; it does not monitor every part of your host or media workflow.
- Process exits: inspect encoder output and service logs, correct the underlying error, and verify the service restarts.
- Connection drops or dropped frames: check host connectivity and encoder bitrate; OBS documents bitrate-related dropped frames as a connection troubleshooting issue.
- YouTube reports a configuration problem: use the health issue details to check codec, bitrate, sample rate, or other reported settings.
- Playlist reaches an unexpected gap or stops: confirm file paths, permissions, playlist order, and loop behavior in the tool you chose.
- Stream key exposure: treat it as compromised and replace or rotate it through YouTube’s stream settings before resuming.
Copyright, reused content, and stream archives
Having a technical right to stream a file is separate from meeting YouTube’s monetization rules. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to broadcast, and retain the permissions needed for a continuous public stream. Replaying the same footage does not itself establish originality or monetization eligibility; YouTube applies its own policies to channels and content. Check YouTube’s current policies before building a channel around repetitive prerecorded material. For broadcasts under 12 hours, YouTube says the stream is automatically archived; that statement does not establish archive behavior for longer streams.
