OBS and SRS do different jobs: OBS encodes and publishes your video; SRS is a media server that can receive and relay or convert a stream. If OBS can publish reliably to YouTube and you do not need a server-side relay or protocol conversion, sending directly from OBS is usually the simpler setup. A low-cost VPS running SRS is an optional extra hop—not a proven reliability upgrade for Indian creators.

OBS vs SRS: which one do you need?

SRS’s current project README identifies the software as SRS 8.0 and lists support for RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and GB28181 on Linux and macOS architectures. It recommends Docker and documents configuring OBS as a custom publisher to SRS. The detailed SRS RTMP reference available here is explicitly archived version 5.0, so use it for general protocol context, not as a version-specific SRS 8 configuration recipe.
The SRS project README describes the software as “SRS/8.0 (Free) is a simple, high-performance, AI-driven real-time media server.” That is the project’s own description, not independent performance evidence.

When a VPS relay is worth operating
A typical relay architecture is encoder (OBS or FFmpeg) → SRS on a Linux VPS → YouTube ingest. OBS creates the encoded stream; SRS receives and serves, forwards, or converts it. A VPS relay makes sense when that intermediate server has a defined job, such as accepting a stream from an upstream source or converting protocols. If your only goal is to send OBS output to YouTube, the relay adds operational work without a demonstrated benefit.
Whether an India VPS makes a stream more reliable depends on the actual encoder-to-VPS and VPS-to-YouTube routes, server availability, and reconnect behavior. No India-specific route comparison or reliability benchmark establishes that it will improve a particular creator’s stream. Treat it as a setup to test, not a guaranteed fix for dropped connections.
Set YouTube and OBS streaming settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as your starting point. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy the ingest URL and stream key shown there. The stream key is an encoder credential: keep it secret, and do not include it in screenshots, logs, public configuration, or source code.

- Protocol: YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which wraps RTMP in TLS/SSL.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s listed guidance supports up to 60 fps.
For H.264, YouTube Help’s encoder table, accessed in 2026 (the page does not show a publication year), gives these examples:

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a VPS transfer allowance or a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream. Select a profile your measured upstream capacity can maintain, then test it and watch YouTube’s stream health. YouTube transcodes live video for different viewer formats and network conditions, but that does not make an unstable input dependable.
Configure the OBS-to-SRS connection
The SRS 8.0 README demonstrates OBS using a custom service with rtmp://localhost/live as the server and livestream as an example stream key. Those values illustrate OBS publishing to SRS; they are not your YouTube outbound destination and should not be copied as a complete forwarding configuration.

- Prepare SRS on the VPS. Use the instructions for the SRS release you actually deploy. The SRS project recommends Docker, but deployment commands and forwarding settings must match the chosen release.
- Point OBS at SRS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose a custom service, and enter the SRS publishing address and stream key configured for your instance. The README’s localhost address is only an example; a remote VPS requires the address and access settings you have configured.
- Configure SRS to send onward. Set the forwarding or conversion path using the documentation for that SRS release. Use the YouTube ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room as the outbound destination. The README’s OBS example alone does not provide this forwarding setup.
- Test before relying on it. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, confirm video and audio reach YouTube, inspect stream health, and check reconnect behavior. Keep the stream key private throughout.
For a direct setup without SRS, configure OBS with the YouTube service or custom ingest details from Live Control Room and publish directly. You avoid managing a relay, but the originating computer and its internet connection must remain available for the stream.
Plan for bandwidth and VPS costs
A relay must send the stream from the VPS to YouTube for as long as it runs. Outbound transfer is approximately the sustained video bitrate over time, plus protocol overhead and any additional viewers or destinations served by that VPS. A headline “unlimited” label is not enough to determine what prolonged outbound use will cost.

- Transfer policy: Confirm included outbound data, metering, caps, overage rates, and fair-use restrictions.
- Total bill: Include taxes, any static IP, backups, monitoring, and other required services—not just the advertised monthly compute price.
- Compute resources: A pure relay and software video transcoding are different workloads. If transcoding, allow for CPU and memory needs; there is no benchmark here for either workload on a low-cost plan.
- Network route: Test packet loss and delivery to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint at the intended bitrate over representative periods. A VPS region’s location alone does not prove route quality.
- Operations: Check restart controls, health checks, logs, alerting, provider availability terms, and support response. Decide how a second publisher or other fallback would take over.
Huawei Cloud documentation gives an example of deploying SRS with Docker on a cloud server. It does not establish that a particular Flexus plan meets this workload or is the least expensive choice.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24/7 session will produce a complete archive or complete rewind history.
If a dependable archive matters, consider splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions and keeping a separate local recording. Verify the resulting workflow on your channel before relying on it. YouTube’s live-stream tips also recommend checking audio and video quality and testing backup encoder failover.
