Best Open-World Games for Adults Who Want Less Sexual Content

The safest way to find an open-world game with less sexual content is to check its current rating summary, not just its age label. ESRB categories are broad, and a missing descriptor does not prove that a game contains no sex references or nudity. Current evidence identifies The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as open-world games worth checking, but it does not establish either one as a verified low-sexual-content choice. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a clear contrast: its ESRB summary lists both Nudity and Sexual Content, so it does not fit a strict low-sexual-content shortlist.

What “less sexual content” should mean

Adults use this phrase to describe several different limits. Decide which one applies before comparing games:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • No sexual scenes: you want to avoid depicted sexual activity, whether interactive or shown in a cutscene.
  • No nudity: partial or full nudity is the deciding factor, even if sexual activity is not shown.
  • Few sexual references: dialogue, jokes, advertisements, quests or character descriptions may be acceptable when scenes and nudity are not.
  • Less than a specific comparison game: you may tolerate occasional references but want substantially less than a title such as Red Dead Redemption 2.

These are different tests. A game can avoid explicit scenes while still using sexual jokes or suggestive themes, and it can contain no sexual material while remaining very mature because of violence, language, horror or drug references.

It also helps to distinguish frequency from severity. One brief, optional scene and recurring sexual jokes may both matter, but they create different playing experiences. A summary that mentions a single brief event does not answer whether you will encounter sexualized dialogue throughout a long campaign. Conversely, a game with suggestive references but no nudity may suit one adult and fail another’s “no references” rule. Write your boundary in plain language before you shop: for example, “no nudity, no depicted sex, occasional non-graphic references acceptable.”

Why the ESRB age category is not enough

The Entertainment Software Rating Board says its categories “suggest age appropriateness.” Its E10+ category can include “minimal suggestive themes,” while an M (Mature 17+) rating may include sexual content. Those categories are not a scale that ranks every game by the amount of sexual material.

ESRB defines Sexual Content as non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, potentially including partial nudity. Sexual Themes covers references to sex or sexuality. Suggestive Themes covers mild provocative references or materials. The distinction matters when a game meets your personal boundary: “Suggestive Themes” is not the same disclosure as “Sexual Content,” but it still signals material some players may wish to avoid.

Descriptors are warnings about content that may have triggered a rating or may be of interest to players. ESRB also says: “Content Descriptors are applied relative to the Rating Category assigned and are not intended to be a complete listing of content.” Therefore, a descriptor that is not listed by a rating source should be treated as not listed by that source, not as proof that the game contains none.

That limitation explains why an age badge cannot answer a search such as “open-world games without sex scenes.” Two M-rated games can receive that category for very different combinations of violence, language, drugs, gambling, horror and sexual material. An E10+ label can still allow minimal suggestive themes. Read the category, every descriptor and the prose summary together, then compare them with your own threshold.

Open-world candidates that need a rating check

A 2026 GamesRadar roundup identifies the following as open-world games. The available evidence establishes their format and reputation for exploration, but it does not establish a current, direct sexual-content judgment for either title. Treat them as candidates for verification rather than guaranteed matches.

Game What is established Sexual-content status How to use the information
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Listed in the 2026 roundup as an open-world game praised for exploration and creative play. Not established by a directly checked current rating summary in the available evidence. Check the rating summary for your region and platform before buying; do not infer “none” from an absent descriptor.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Included in the same roundup among open-world games. Not established by a directly checked current rating summary in the available evidence. Use as a follow-up candidate, especially if you want a game like Skyrim; verify the exact edition and regional rating.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Open-world western adventure with an M (Mature 17+) ESRB rating. ESRB lists Nudity and Sexual Content and describes nudity plus brief sexual content in its summary. Exclude it from a strict low-sexual-content list. It is useful only as a clearly labeled comparison point.

That table is intentionally conservative. A game belongs on a personal “low sexual content” list only after its current rating summary has been read and the wording matches your boundary.

The two unverified candidates can still be useful starting points because they satisfy the open-world part of the request. Tears of the Kingdom is presented as an exploration- and creativity-focused open world in the 2026 roundup. Skyrim is included there as an open-world option and is a natural search term for readers asking for games like it with less sexual content. Neither description answers the sexual-content question. Do not turn popularity, tone, art style or a familiar franchise reputation into a content guarantee.

How to verify a game before you purchase it

  1. Identify the exact release. Record the platform, edition, remaster or expansion and the country whose rating applies. A later edition can have different rating information, and ESRB covers the United States and Canada rather than every region.
  2. Open the complete rating summary. Do not stop at the M, T or E10+ badge. Read the prose summary as well as the descriptors.
  3. Search for the relevant terms. Look for “Sexual Content,” “Nudity,” “Sexual Themes” and “Suggestive Themes.” Also note whether the summary describes a scene, dialogue, imagery, an optional activity or material encountered during the main story.
  4. Record frequency and context. “Brief” or “infrequent” is materially different from repeated encounters. A one-time optional scene may be acceptable to one player and disqualifying to another.
  5. Separate sexual material from other mature content. Write violence, language, drugs, gambling and horror in their own notes. A low-sexual-content game can still be unsuitable if your concern is overall intensity.
  6. Check regional information. If you play outside the United States and Canada, consult the applicable regional board, such as PEGI, and use the rating for the same edition. Do not transfer an ESRB descriptor to another region without checking.
  7. Decide what to do when information is incomplete. If the rating page has no useful summary, mark the title “unverified” rather than “clean.” Look for an official content warning or accessibility guide from the publisher, but do not treat silence as a guarantee.

Keep the result in a small note rather than relying on memory. A useful record has fields for title, platform, edition, region, rating category, sexual descriptors, summary wording, frequency, context, optionality and other mature categories. That makes a later purchase—especially a complete edition or remaster—less likely to be based on the wrong listing.

Reading a rating summary correctly

Descriptors are signals, not a complete inventory

ESRB’s own wording limits what a descriptor can prove. A listed descriptor confirms that the rating board identified relevant material; an unlisted descriptor does not certify its absence. This is particularly important for players seeking “open-world games without sex scenes” or “open-world games with no nudity,” because those phrases require a stricter standard than an age category provides.

Do not convert “not listed” into “none.” Use that exact distinction in your notes and recommendations. If a page lists Sexual Themes but not Nudity, you can say nudity is not listed by that rating source; you cannot promise that the game has no nudity unless the summary or another authoritative warning explicitly supports that conclusion.

Summary wording supplies context

The prose can explain whether content is brief, implied, comic, optional, unavoidable or tied to a particular location. Those details are more useful than the letter rating alone. When a summary names only a broad theme, you still need to decide whether references, jokes or suggestive imagery cross your personal line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay attention to what the summary does not specify. “Brief sexual content” answers duration only in a general way; it does not automatically tell you whether the event is skippable. “Sexual themes” indicates references or subject matter, but not necessarily how often they occur. If optionality is important, require the summary or an official warning to address it before calling a game a verified fit.

Edition and platform can change the answer

Use the rating attached to the version you will actually play. A base game, complete edition, downloadable expansion and remaster may carry different summaries. Physical and downloadable releases can also receive separate listings. Keep the edition name with your notes so that a rating for one release is not accidentally applied to another.

The same discipline applies to bundles. If a package includes an expansion, check whether the package’s rating covers additional content or whether a separate listing exists. If you plan to install downloadable content later, repeat the check for that content rather than assuming the base-game summary covers it.

Keeping sexual content separate from overall maturity

Low sexual content does not mean family-friendly or low intensity. An open-world game may have no listed sexual material and still feature graphic violence, disturbing subjects, strong language, drug use or frightening imagery. Conversely, an M-rated game can receive that category for violence or language even when sexual material is limited.

Use separate columns for sex and nudity, violence, language, drugs, gambling and horror. This avoids a common false conclusion: that a game is generally mild because it meets one narrow content preference. Adults may be comfortable with mature violence but not sexual imagery, or the reverse. A precise shortlist describes both the acceptable feature and the remaining reasons a title may be unsuitable.

The ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable games in 2024 were E or E10+. That market-wide figure does not measure sexual content and cannot be used to conclude that most open-world games meet your preference. Open-world titles are a mixed group, and each game still requires an individual check.

Using Red Dead Redemption 2 as a comparison point

If your personal benchmark is “less sexual content than Red Dead Redemption 2,” the ESRB evidence gives you a clear baseline. Its rating is M (Mature 17+) with Nudity and Sexual Content descriptors, and the summary describes nudity and brief sexual content. That makes it unsuitable for a strict no-nudity or no-sex-scenes list.

It should not be used to label every other mature open-world game as equally sexual. The useful comparison questions are narrower: Does the other game list Nudity? Does it list Sexual Content, Sexual Themes or Suggestive Themes? Does the summary describe repeated, optional or unavoidable material? Without those answers for the other edition and region, “less than Red Dead Redemption 2” remains an assumption rather than a verified result.

For a fair comparison, place the two rating summaries side by side and compare the same fields. A title with Sexual Themes but no Sexual Content descriptor may be less explicit, yet still fail a reader who wants no references. A title with a brief, optional event might be acceptable to someone avoiding recurring material but not to someone requiring zero scenes. “Less” is therefore a personal threshold, not a universal ranking.

Common mistakes that produce unreliable recommendations

  • Filtering by age label alone: M, T or E10+ does not quantify sexual material.
  • Treating a missing descriptor as a clean bill of health: ESRB says descriptors are not a complete listing.
  • Confusing themes with scenes: Sexual Themes and Suggestive Themes can matter even when Sexual Content is not listed.
  • Ignoring the region: ESRB information is not automatically the applicable rating outside the United States and Canada.
  • Using the wrong edition: remasters, expansions, complete editions and downloads may have separate entries.
  • Calling a mature game family-friendly: low sexual content says nothing by itself about violence, language, drugs or horror.
  • Promising optionality without evidence: a summary must support claims that content can be avoided.

A practical decision framework

Choose “verified fit” only when every required check passes

  • The exact edition has a current rating summary.
  • The summary does not conflict with your specific boundary, such as no nudity or no depicted sexual behavior.
  • You have considered references and suggestive themes separately from scenes.
  • You have reviewed other mature-content categories that matter to you.
  • The region and platform match the copy you intend to play.

“Verified fit” does not mean universally clean. It means the documented information matches the one reader’s stated limit. State the limit alongside the recommendation so another adult can make a different decision.

Use “possible fit” when the game is promising but unverified

Tears of the Kingdom and Skyrim belong in this category on the evidence currently available. Their open-world status is established, but their sexual-content suitability has not been established by a directly checked current rating summary here. They are sensible titles to investigate, not titles to recommend unconditionally.

Use “not a fit” when the rating conflicts with your limit

Red Dead Redemption 2 falls into this category for anyone requiring no nudity or no sexual content because its ESRB entry explicitly includes both descriptors.

Use “unknown” instead of guessing

If a rating summary cannot be found or does not provide enough detail, label the game unknown. That is more useful than filling the gap with assumptions based on genre, marketing, screenshots or another person’s memory. Readers who need a strict boundary can then decide whether to wait for a verified listing or choose a title with clearer documentation.

Questions to answer before starting a game

  • Would a single brief scene disqualify the game, or are you avoiding recurring content?
  • Are sexual jokes and references acceptable when there is no nudity?
  • Do you need to avoid optional content as well as mandatory story scenes?
  • Is your concern limited to sex and nudity, or do violence, language, drugs and horror matter equally?
  • Which region and edition will you play?
  • Does a descriptor such as Suggestive Themes cross your boundary even if Sexual Content is not listed?
  • Will downloadable expansions or a complete edition be part of your purchase?

Writing those answers down prevents a common mistake: accepting a game because it lacks one descriptor while overlooking another type of material that violates the actual preference.

Frequently asked questions

Does an E10+ rating guarantee no sexual content?

No. ESRB says E10+ can include minimal suggestive themes, and descriptors are not a complete listing. Read the current summary for the exact edition.

Is an M rating proof that a game has sex scenes?

No. M is a broad Mature category that may reflect violence, language, drugs, horror or sexual material. Check the descriptors and prose summary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I call a game “no nudity” when Nudity is not listed?

Only say that nudity is not listed by that rating source. Absence of a descriptor is not proof that the content is absent.

Is Red Dead Redemption 2 suitable for a strict no-sex or no-nudity preference?

No. Its ESRB entry lists Nudity and Sexual Content and describes nudity plus brief sexual content.

Are Tears of the Kingdom and Skyrim confirmed low-sexual-content games?

Not on the evidence available here. They are identified as open-world candidates, but each still needs a current regional rating-summary check.

Should I use ESRB information outside the United States and Canada?

Use the rating board applicable to your region, such as PEGI, and match the same platform and edition. Do not transfer an ESRB descriptor without checking.

Bottom line

There is no evidence-based universal ranking of open-world games by sexual content in the material currently available. The responsible shortlist is therefore conditional: investigate The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim through their current regional rating summaries, and do not treat either as confirmed low-sexual-content picks until that check is complete. Exclude Red Dead Redemption 2 when your boundary is strict, because its ESRB summary lists Nudity and Sexual Content. For every game, compare the full summary, context, frequency, optionality, edition and region—not the age badge alone.
