Far Cry 6 is the best overall open-world game for taking territory. Its campaign is built around fighting Antón Castillo’s regime across Yara, and the combination of regional objectives, enemy positions and guerrilla support makes liberation the clearest organizing idea of the game. Choose Just Cause 3 if you want destruction to be the point, Ghost Recon Wildlands for methodical squad tactics, or Assassin’s Creed Valhalla if raids and settlement growth matter more than permanently repainting a map.
The eight games below all let you remove hostile control in some form, but “conquer” does not mean the same thing in each one. A captured outpost may unlock activities, a destroyed base may open new objectives, a district may change hands between factions, or a conquest battle may simply mark a temporary regional power shift. The ranking weighs how strongly the takeover loop shapes the world, how satisfying the capture activity is, and whether control is required for the story or mainly an optional completion goal.

How these games were ranked
Each game was judged on five practical questions:
- Map impact: Does removing enemy control visibly change objectives, access, faction presence or upgrades?
- Capture activity: Are you clearing an outpost, storming a fortress, taking a district, destroying convoys or fighting a conquest battle?
- Combat and traversal: Does the game make takeover enjoyable through shooting, stealth, vehicles, raids or role-playing systems?
- Support systems: Can allies, recruited forces or a squad help you hold or attack territory?
- Story weight: Is conquering an area mandatory progression, a recurring campaign layer or optional completion?
Here, a territory-liberation game means one in which you remove hostile control through objectives, infrastructure destruction, location capture or leader defeat. The ranking favors games where those actions are central rather than incidental.

1. Far Cry 6 — best overall for a liberation campaign
Far Cry 6 is the safest recommendation when your mental picture is “take back the map one hostile area at a time.” Ubisoft and Xbox present it as a first-person, open-world guerrilla shooter set in Yara, where the player fights Antón Castillo’s regime. That premise is not background decoration: regional conflict and the removal of regime control provide the game’s clearest through-line.
#1 Best Overall
Why it ranks first
Yara’s structure makes enemy-held locations feel like parts of a larger liberation effort rather than isolated combat arenas. You move between regional objectives, attack regime positions and use guerrilla systems to keep pressure on the ruling faction. The result is a takeover loop that is easy to understand: identify the area controlled by the regime, complete the objectives that weaken it, and continue the campaign into the next region.
What conquering feels like
The first-person perspective keeps every capture immediate. You are not issuing a distant map command; you are infiltrating or assaulting the position yourself, choosing how much preparation and support to bring. The guerrilla framing also gives the campaign a sense of allies and resistance rather than making liberation a purely solo checklist.
Important limitation
Not every cleared location represents a permanent simulation of civilian life or a completely transformed economy. The meaningful change is primarily campaign progress, access to further objectives and the removal of regime presence from the areas the story asks you to reclaim. If you want the strongest combination of narrative purpose and repeated area-clearing, this is the best fit.
2. Just Cause 3 — best explosive sandbox
Just Cause 3 turns conquest into spectacular infrastructure demolition. Its open-world Mediterranean setting is organized around destroying enemy bases, and base destruction unlocks further objectives and challenges. That direct relationship between destruction and progression is why it outranks games in which territory control is mostly a menu state.
Why it ranks second
The game gives you a clear physical target: an enemy base that can be dismantled piece by piece. Instead of treating capture as a single interaction, it makes the process a playground for explosives, vehicles and traversal. The pleasure comes from deciding how to reach the installation and then watching its defenses and structures collapse.
What conquering feels like
Base assaults are less about holding a line than creating a chain reaction. You can approach from the ground, arrive by vehicle or use the game’s mobility tools to attack from unusual angles. Once the base is destroyed, new objectives and challenges become available, giving the act a concrete reward beyond a completion icon.
Important limitation
This is a sandbox conquest fantasy rather than a detailed occupation simulation. The world’s response is expressed mainly through unlocked content and reduced enemy control at the targeted locations. Pick it over Far Cry 6 when your priority is creative destruction and movement; pick Far Cry 6 when the liberation campaign itself matters more.
3. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands — best tactical squad option
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands places territory clearing inside a reconnaissance operation. Ubisoft identifies you as Nomad, leading a Ghost squad across Bolivia. That setup changes the question from “How loudly can I take this base?” to “How can my team dismantle the enemy presence with the least risk?”
Rank #2
- Available Now - Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology.
- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
- The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.
Why it ranks third
Regional progress is filtered through scouting, stealth and coordinated fire. You can study an area before committing, mark threats and synchronize attacks with squad support. The open-world geography matters because approach routes and sightlines become part of the conquest decision rather than mere scenery.
What conquering feels like
Clearing an area is a small operation with a sequence: locate the target, gather intelligence, position the team and execute. Even when the final result is a familiar “region cleared” state, the path to that result can be deliberate and tactical. Players who enjoy planning more than spectacle will find this the most satisfying takeover loop in the list.
Important limitation
The game does not present territory as a fully independent political simulation. Control is tied to dismantling hostile operations and progressing through the campaign. It is also less immediately legible than Just Cause 3: the reward is strategic progress and mission access rather than a dramatic visual transformation after every capture.

4. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla — best for raids and settlement growth
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla connects territorial expansion to raids, alliances and the growth of a settlement. Ubisoft describes a world in which you face brutal enemies, raid fortresses, build your clan’s new settlement and forge alliances to win glory. The game’s takeover fantasy is therefore broader than simply clearing icons: each region contributes to the rise of your community.
Why it ranks fourth
Fortress assaults provide the clearest capture activity, while settlement building gives victories a durable purpose. Instead of treating every region as an interchangeable checklist, the game ties regional influence to the story of establishing a foothold and building relationships. Ubisoft’s narrative discussion refers to almost two dozen territory quests, underscoring how much of the regional structure is carried by self-contained stories and objectives.
What conquering feels like
A raid is a group action. You break into a fortified location, call on your crew, secure resources and return those gains to the settlement. Alliances then broaden the meaning of control: influence is earned through regional stories and commitments, not only through combat.
Important limitation
Valhalla is not primarily a map-painting game. Regions have their own narratives, and conquest is entwined with character arcs and settlement development. Choose it when you want territory to support a larger clan-building story; choose one of the top three when you want repeated outpost-style liberation to be the main activity.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War adapts the open-world action-adventure format to a campaign of recruiting forces and taking strongholds. Its defining conquest activity is the fortress war: build an army, prepare your assault and attack an enemy-held stronghold.

Why it ranks fifth
The game makes support forces more visible than most entries here. You are not merely removing an icon from the map; you are assembling a fighting force that can participate in the struggle for a fortress. Skill progression and recruitment systems give preparation a strategic dimension before the attack begins.
What conquering feels like
Stronghold assaults are the culmination of the open-world loop. Exploration and encounters help you improve your character and gather allies, then those investments are tested in a large-scale attack. The sense of ownership comes from the army you assembled and the fortress you captured, not from a generalized regional percentage.
Important limitation
The exact conquest presentation varies with platform and version, so check the edition you plan to play when comparing features. This is best understood as a fortress-war game inside an open world, not a broad civilian-liberation campaign. Its appeal is concentrated in preparing and winning sieges.
6. Mafia III — best gang-district takeover story
Mafia III treats conquest as a criminal power struggle. Lincoln Clay’s campaign is organized around dismantling rival control and assigning districts, so the map changes through faction management as much as through direct combat.
Why it ranks sixth
Districts give the campaign a strong narrative shape. Each takeover is part of a plan to weaken the opposing organization, and the choice of who receives control affects the balance among your allies. That makes the territory loop more personal and political than the military liberation systems above it.
What conquering feels like
You attack the structures supporting rival control, remove key figures and then decide how the captured district is distributed. The result is a sequence of operations linked by the question of who will profit from the next gain. The map is a stage for a gang war, not a neutral collection of bases.
Important limitation
The takeover is narrative and faction-management driven rather than a freeform military liberation system. If you want to improvise assaults across a broad range of outposts, this is a weaker match. If you want the consequences of conquest to be expressed through character relationships and district assignments, it is unusually focused.

Mad Max combines convoy attacks, enemy strongholds and region upgrades into a wasteland cleanup loop. Vehicles are not a side option here: they are the main way the game turns territorial control into movement, pursuit and destruction.

Why it ranks seventh
The loop has satisfying variety. Convoys create mobile targets, strongholds provide fixed assaults and region upgrades give a reason to reduce enemy activity. Clearing threats can make travel and development more manageable, which gives the wasteland a practical sense of improvement.
What conquering feels like
You move through a hostile region, identify the threats that support enemy control and decide whether to pursue a convoy or attack a stronghold. The strongest moments come from combining vehicle combat with a ground assault, then investing the rewards in upgrades.
Important limitation
The world does not transform as continuously or as dramatically as a dedicated liberation campaign. Region upgrades and reduced threats are meaningful, but the emphasis remains on scavenging, combat and vehicle progression. Rank it higher only if driving and convoy hunting are more important to you than visible political control.
8. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey — best RPG conquest-battle option
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey offers regional power shifts and conquest battles within a large historical RPG. Its version of conquest is episodic: a region can move between competing powers, and the battle provides a focused event inside the broader exploration and character-building experience.
Why it ranks eighth
The game earns its place because conquest battles create a recognizable area-control mechanic without making it the sole purpose of the campaign. Build variety, exploration and historical quests remain the dominant activities, while regional power gives you another reason to engage with the map.
What conquering feels like
You weaken a region’s current power, trigger a conquest battle and fight through the resulting conflict. The appeal is flexibility: your character build, equipment choices and preferred combat approach matter as much as the territory objective.
Important limitation
Control changes are more temporary and episodic than in the top-ranked games. Conquest is usually an optional or repeatable layer rather than a permanent liberation story, so it is the right choice for players who want RPG experimentation with a side of territorial conflict—not for players seeking a map that stays visibly transformed after every victory.

What “conquering an area” actually changes
The biggest difference among these games is consequence. In Far Cry 6, regional liberation is tied directly to the campaign against the regime. In Just Cause 3, destroying bases unlocks objectives and challenges. Wildlands uses area progress to support the dismantling of hostile operations, while Valhalla feeds raids and regional stories into settlement and alliance growth.
Shadow of War concentrates consequences in stronghold ownership and the forces available for siege warfare. Mafia III makes the result social and political through district assignments. Mad Max turns cleanup into upgrades and reduced threats, whereas Odyssey treats control as a recurring regional power shift. None of these systems should be read as a full simulation of population, government or economics; they are game-specific ways of making hostile control matter.
