For role-playing freedom, parkour survival, or a newer sandbox, consider Skyrim Special Edition, Dying Light 2, Crimson Desert, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
This is a qualitative shortlist, not a scored ranking: each game suits a different kind of exploration, story, combat, or freedom. PC Gamer’s recommendations, updated 19 June 2026, provide the main basis for these picks; GamesRadar’s October 2026 Steam roundup also includes Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Best open-world PC games by play style
Elden Ring: for discovery and tough combat
Elden Ring is a strong choice if you want to find your own way rather than follow a checklist. PC Gamer describes its design as omitting a quest log, map markers, and a collectibles list, putting the emphasis on organic exploration. That approach can make discovery compelling, but it also means the game offers less explicit direction than a marker-led adventure. Its world is challenging, so choose it for demanding action rather than a relaxed tour.
The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion adds a map called the Land of Shadow, according to PC Gamer. The recommendation is about the game’s exploration and combat design, not a guarantee of performance on every PC.

Red Dead Redemption 2: for a lived-in historical world
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 for a story-led journey through a detailed depiction of the fading American frontier. PC Gamer points to wildlife, random world events, and Arthur Morgan’s location-specific commentary as parts of what makes the setting feel observed rather than merely expansive.
The PC version also has Red Dead Online and a large mod library, as noted by PC Gamer. Those are additional reasons to consider it if you want more than the main story, though they are distinct experiences from the single-player campaign.

Cyberpunk 2077: for a science-fiction city and RPG
Cyberpunk 2077 centers on Night City, making it the pick here for players who want an urban science-fiction setting alongside role-playing. PC Gamer highlights the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion in its account of the game’s recovery after a troubled launch. That editorial assessment is not a promise of current technical performance on a particular computer; check the current PC requirements for your setup before buying.
Skyrim Special Edition: for flexible role-playing and mods
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition suits players who want to shape their character’s role in a large fantasy world. Dying Light 2: for movement-led survival
In Dying Light 2, the appeal is getting around as much as reaching the next destination. Parkour lets you move through the city, with traversal tools becoming available over time. Its day-night cycle changes the danger level, so it fits players who want survival tension to shape how and when they explore.
Crimson Desert: for a newer, activity-rich sandbox
Crimson Desert is the option for players drawn to a broad single-player world with numerous activities. PC Gamer describes it as a newer game that has received updates since launch and also notes its rocky launch. Treat it as an evolving choice rather than a long-established classic.

- Decide how much direction you want. Elden Ring leans toward self-directed discovery; if you prefer an explicit checklist-led route, this shortlist does not establish that any one title is the best match.
- Pick a setting you want to inhabit. Choose frontier history in Red Dead Redemption 2, a futuristic city in Cyberpunk 2077, medieval Bohemia in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, or fantasy in Skyrim Special Edition and Elden Ring.
- Match the core activity to your taste. Consider demanding combat in Elden Ring, role-playing in Cyberpunk 2077 or Skyrim, and parkour survival in Dying Light 2.
- Separate world size from world quality. A large map alone does not establish that exploration will feel meaningful. These recommendations are based on described qualities such as discovery, detail, traversal, and activities—not a common score or objective ranking.
- Check your PC before purchase. Current system requirements, hardware benchmarks, accessibility options, editions, and regional availability have not been established here. Consult the publisher or storefront listing for the specific game and edition you intend to play.
