If you want an open-world game where extraordinary abilities are central to the experience, start with inFAMOUS Second Son for multiple superhuman power sets and a city designed to interact with them, or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for Peter Parker swinging through an open-world New York. They offer different superhero fantasies, and the right pick depends on what you want to do with your powers—and which PlayStation console you own.
Two strong starting points, not a universal ranking
These games answer the open-world superpower question in different ways: inFAMOUS Second Son centers on a superhuman whose abilities shape movement and encounters across Seattle, while Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 puts you in the role of Peter Parker in an open-world New York. Official descriptions establish those distinct premises, but do not support a definitive ranking of combat depth or an exhaustive comparison of every superpower game.

inFAMOUS Second Son: choose it for varied powers in a reactive city
inFAMOUS Second Son is the clearer fit if you want the powers themselves to be the focus. PlayStation’s official materials describe a game about superhumans being hunted, with multiple power sets and consequences tied to actions in the city and among its people. A developer Q&A discusses the choice to give the game multiple sets of abilities, while a separate development feature describes Seattle as an open world built with traffic, residents, vistas, destructible environments, and spaces that interact with powers.
That combination makes it a useful pick for players who want abilities to influence how they move through and engage with an urban setting, rather than just decorate a superhero story. The official platform listing identifies it as a PS4 exclusive, so check your hardware before choosing it. See the developer Q&A about the power-set design and the feature on bringing Seattle and its power interactions to life.
#1 Best Overall
- Smash, swing and fly in the first Lego video game featuring more than 100 of your favorite super heroes and super villains from the Marvel Universe, including Iron Man, Wolverine, Hulk, Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Loki and Deadpool.
- Perform new and powerful moves as “Big-fig” characters like Hulk and Abomination. Leave a path of destruction as you smash through Lego walls and throw cars using hyper strength.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: choose it for Spider-Man in open-world New York
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the natural choice if your main draw is inhabiting a familiar superhero and exploring a recognizable city as Peter Parker. PlayStation’s official page describes him fighting crime in an open-world New York and lists the game for PS5. That confirms the setting, role, and platform, but the page does not provide enough detail to compare its combat depth or ability variety directly with Second Son.
For a platform-specific overview of superhero games, PlayStation also maintains a PS4 and PS5 superhero-game guide.
Rank #2
- LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 features an expanded line-up of iconic Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains from different eras and realities, including Guardians of the Galaxy characters, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax as well as Doctor Strange, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man 2099, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Kang the Conqueror and a whole lot more!
How to pick between them
- Want multiple original superhuman power sets? Begin with inFAMOUS Second Son; official developer material specifically discusses its multiple sets.
- Want Peter Parker and open-world New York? Choose Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, whose official page presents that premise.
- Choosing by combat depth or precise traversal mechanics? The official descriptions cited here do not establish a fair head-to-head comparison on those details, so consult fuller game-specific information before deciding.
- Checking compatibility? The confirmed listings are PS4 exclusive for Second Son and PS5 for Spider-Man 2. Verify current editions and any other platform availability with the relevant official listing before buying.
What about Prototype or Saints Row IV?
Players asking for an open-world superpower game often mention inFAMOUS, Prototype, Spider-Man, and Saints Row IV. Those titles appear in anecdotal community discussions, not as a verified comparative shortlist here. The official Saints Row legacy page confirms the franchise, but does not establish the specific superpower mechanics of Saints Row IV; it would be misleading to present it as a researched recommendation on that basis alone.
For examples of the wording players use, see the discussions about games like inFAMOUS and Prototype and open-world superpower games. These are individual discussions, not evidence of broad popularity.
