Those are distinct awards—not a shared ranking—and the different labels for Lost Ark reflect a real genre boundary.
How to read the 2022 “best MMO” picks
There was no single, industry-wide winner. The awards below came from different outlets and audiences, and they did not use precisely the same categories. Treat each as evidence of what that publication or its readers valued in 2022, not as a universal verdict or a guide to which game is best to play now.
| Game | 2022 recognition | What the recognition tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy XIV | MMORPG.com staff: Best MMORPG of 2022 | An editorial award; the outlet pointed to continuing updates after Endwalker, including Patch 6.1 and Patch 6.2, which added Island Sanctuaries. |
| Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons | MMORPG.com readers: Players’ Choice MMORPG of 2022 | A reader-voted award. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker was runner-up. |
| Lost Ark | Massively Overpowered staff: MMORPG of the Year; MMORPG.com: Best ARPG | Recognition from both outlets, but under different genre labels. Its action-RPG framing is part of the story, rather than a reason to omit it from an MMO shortlist. |

Final Fantasy XIV: MMORPG.com staff’s pick
MMORPG.com named Final Fantasy XIV its Best MMORPG of 2022. Its award article highlighted the game’s continuing post-Endwalker updates, including Patch 6.1 and Patch 6.2. The latter introduced Island Sanctuaries, giving the award rationale a concrete connection to the year’s ongoing support rather than only to the expansion’s earlier release.

Choose this as the clearest pick if you want the staff-selected winner from that outlet. The award establishes what MMORPG.com’s editors chose in 2022; it is not a comparative score against every MMO.
Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons: the reader-voted choice
MMORPG.com readers selected Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons as their Players’ Choice MMORPG of 2022. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker finished as runner-up. The outlet’s coverage situated the expansion in a notable year for Guild Wars 2: the game marked its tenth anniversary, End of Dragons returned the story to Cantha, and the game became available on Steam.

This is the strongest pick if you specifically want the readers’ choice, rather than a staff award. The result represents MMORPG.com’s voting audience, not all MMO players.
Lost Ark: an MMO standout with an ARPG label
Lost Ark received two notable but differently categorized honors. MMORPG.com called it Best ARPG of 2022 and described it as free-to-play in that award article. Massively Overpowered instead selected it as MMORPG of the Year. The difference is useful context: outlets can include the same online game in different categories because they draw the MMO and action-RPG boundary differently.

Massively Overpowered contributor Brianna Royce described it as a “huge hit for our genre this year,” adding that it “launched big, stayed big, brought a lot of eyeballs to the MMORPG industry and even to MOP.” That is Royce’s assessment in the outlet’s December 29, 2022 awards coverage, not a measured industry statistic.
Other established PC MMOs in the 2022 conversation
Massively Overpowered’s 2022 reader poll included World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls Online, and New World, alongside Final Fantasy XIV, Guild Wars 2, and many other games. Their presence shows they were part of that outlet’s MMO conversation; the poll is not a market survey or proof of broad player consensus.
