If you want an open-world game with a great story and freedom after finishing Red Dead Redemption 2, start with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—if you’re open to fantasy. It offers the broadest combination of a substantial story, exploration and a large world, but it is not a Western or a close match for RDR2’s combat. For a historical horseback adventure, try Ghost of Tsushima; for player-led discovery and punishing fights, try Elden Ring. The right choice depends on which part of RDR2 you want more of.

Choose by what you want from RDR2

What changes from RDR2

Another expansive, story-led world

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Fantasy, magic and monster hunting replace the historical Western setting. The Complete Edition includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. PlayStation’s open-world guide lists the game for PS4 and PS5 and describes the Complete Edition contents.

Historical horseback adventure

Ghost of Tsushima

It moves to 13th-century Japan during the Mongol invasion, with samurai combat and a horse. It is a thematic cousin, not a Western simulation. GameSpot’s comparison describes its setting and story.

Open-ended discovery and difficult combat

Elden Ring

Exploration is more player-led and combat more demanding; the story is also less conventionally presented than RDR2’s. PlayStation’s guide lists it among open-world games, while GameSpot discusses its exploration.

Grounded historical role-playing

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Its historical European setting comes with survival needs and upkeep for weapons, gear and horse. It’s a better fit if those simulation-like systems sound appealing than if you want RDR2’s more cinematic flow. GameSpot’s comparison covers these systems.

A dense futuristic city

Cyberpunk 2077

Night City and a role-playing story as V offer a richly imagined urban science-fiction setting, a major shift from rural landscapes and a Western atmosphere. See PlayStation’s guide and Bandai Namco’s RPG catalogue.

  • Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
  • The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.

A modern Rockstar sandbox

Grand Theft Auto V

It shares Rockstar’s open-world freedom and character-driven appeal, but trades the Western for a contemporary fictional Los Angeles and a criminal-sandbox tone. GameSpot’s comparison discusses the connection and differences.

Why The Witcher 3 is the broadest next pick

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the strongest all-around recommendation when your priority is getting lost in another large, quest-filled world with a substantial narrative. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as an open-world RPG; its current-generation version is also covered on the official game page. PlayStation lists it for PS4 and PS5. If choosing an edition, the Complete Edition includes the two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Check PlayStation’s listing for the platform and edition details.

Mad Max - PlayStation Hits (PS4)
  • Be Mad Max - Become the iconic post-apocalyptic warrior, crafting and upgrading Max's equipment and weapons to survive by combining melee combat, gunplay and tactical techniques. Gamers must form alliances as they work towards the goal of building their "Magnum opus."
  • Immersive savage Wasteland - Explore the gritty, dynamic world while braving the treacherous landscapes, hostile weather patterns and deadly marauders.
  • survive the open-world landscape - Staying alive isn't easy. Players clash with deadly factions and gangs through scores of dangerous side-missions and quests in the dynamic open-world full of exploration.
  • intense vehicular combat - Engage in dynamic inter-vehicular combat, taking down enemy vehicles with a range of powerful weapons. Car combat is entirely physics-based, so no two battles are ever the Same.
  • build the ultimate survival machine - Players design, customize and upgrade their ultimate vehicle-the Magnum Opus-choosing from different car chassis and a slew of upgrades including mounted weapons, armour and engines to survive another day

The key caveat is the genre shift: expect magic, monsters and fantasy RPG systems, not RDR2’s grounded Western setting or a similar combat feel. If the setting matters more than the scale of the adventure, Ghost of Tsushima or Kingdom Come: Deliverance may be a closer thematic choice.

How to make the choice

  • Start with setting: Pick Ghost of Tsushima or Kingdom Come: Deliverance for historical worlds; choose The Witcher 3 for fantasy or Cyberpunk 2077 for science fiction.
  • Think about how you like to explore: Choose Elden Ring if you want to set your own direction and experiment. Choose a more story- and quest-led option if you want clearer narrative momentum.
  • Be honest about combat: Elden Ring is the pick for a much tougher challenge, not the safest choice if what you want is RDR2’s particular pacing.
  • Consider systems and upkeep: Kingdom Come: Deliverance foregrounds survival needs and maintaining equipment and horse. That detail can be a draw or a chore.
  • Check your platform separately: Similarity does not tell you whether a game is available for your console or PC, or which edition to buy. Confirm the platform and edition on an official listing before purchasing.

What none of these games reproduces

No single recommendation here combines all of RDR2’s specific ingredients. A historical setting, a horse, a compelling story, freedom to roam, combat style and simulation systems are separate reasons to love it—and the alternatives trade among them. Treat these as matches for a particular part of the experience, not interchangeable replacements. Platform availability is a practical check, not a measure of how similar a game feels.
