Best Open-World Games With Realistic Graphics to Play While Waiting for GTA 6 (2026)

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best overall choice if you want a believable world, dense environmental detail and the kind of slow-burn immersion associated with Rockstar games. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for a modern city, driving and criminal jobs; Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic historical scenery; Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 for demanding historical simulation; or Horizon Forbidden West for the most spectacular science-fiction visuals.

Rockstar currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with PlayStation 5 identified as the best platform. None of the games below is a one-for-one replacement: each matches a different part of the GTA appeal, from living-world detail to city driving, crime stories, exploration or visual fidelity.

What makes a good GTA 6 waiting game?

“Realistic graphics” can mean several different things. A game may depict a historically plausible society, render a contemporary city in extraordinary detail, animate believable characters, or simply make its landscapes look close to filmed reality. Those are not interchangeable qualities.

The five recommendations therefore differ along six practical axes:

  • Setting realism: modern city, historical world, or deliberately imaginative science fiction.
  • Presentation: first-person immediacy versus a cinematic third-person camera.
  • World density: how much is happening in streets, settlements and wilderness when you are not following the main quest.
  • Tempo: fast driving and combat, deliberate exploration, or simulation-heavy routines.
  • Freedom: systemic activities that emerge from the world versus tightly authored missions.
  • Platform fit: whether your current console or PC can run the edition you want.

Use the comparison table for a quick match, then read the individual sections for trade-offs that are easy to miss in a graphics-only list.

Ghost of Tsushima Highly stylized but historically inspired island landscapes, mountains and fields Third-person samurai sword combat, stealth and environmental exploration Deliberate duels balanced with open-world travel Cinematic scenery and focused historical adventure PS4, PS5 and PC

1. Red Dead Redemption 2: the best overall realism and immersion

Why it is the closest all-round fit

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the strongest recommendation when “realistic” means a world that appears to operate independently of the player. Its Wild West setting is grounded rather than fantastical, and the environment is built around small observations: weather, wildlife, settlements, travel, period equipment and people whose routines can produce unexpected encounters.

The game’s central story follows the death of the Wild West, giving the landscape a historical direction rather than treating it as a neutral playground. That context helps the visual detail matter. A town is not merely a collection of mission markers; it is part of a society changing under pressure.

Systems that make the world feel lived in

Simulation touches are unusually prominent. You care for the player character and horse, and the relationship between travel, equipment and survival is part of the rhythm rather than a menu-only upgrade path. Random situations involving non-player characters can interrupt a ride, creating stories that are separate from the main plot.

This approach is ideal if you enjoyed the sense that a Rockstar open world contains more than its mission checklist. It also rewards players who are willing to stop, investigate and let scenes unfold at their own speed.

What to expect before starting

  • Travel is intentionally measured. The game values atmosphere and observation over constant rapid movement.
  • The realism is historical, not contemporary. You will not get modern cars, skyscrapers or present-day criminal infrastructure.
  • Progression is character-focused. The appeal comes from the world, relationships and routines as much as from combat.
  • Online play exists separately. Red Dead Online provides a multiplayer mode, while the main recommendation is the narrative campaign.

Choose this first if your priority is “a huge world with things happening around me” and you can accept a western’s slower cadence. It is less suitable if your main requirement is urban driving or immediate access to high-tech weapons.

2. Cyberpunk 2077: the best urban sandbox alternative

Why it matches the modern-city side of GTA

Cyberpunk 2077 is the clearest substitute for readers who want a large city, vehicles, criminal work and a major story. Night City is futuristic rather than realistic in genre, but its streets, districts and competing interests are presented as a functioning urban environment. That makes it a strong match for the feeling of moving between jobs in a city full of distractions.

The game combines driving with side activities, criminal jobs and cybernetic upgrades. You can approach missions through combat, equipment choices and character development instead of relying on one fixed style. The result is a sandbox that feels closer to an action RPG than to a pure driving game.

Where it deliberately differs

Night City’s premise includes advanced cybernetics and other speculative technology, so it is not a realistic setting in the historical or contemporary sense. Its realism is visual and social: dense architecture, contrasting neighborhoods, crowded streets and the consequences of powerful corporations and criminal groups.

The first-person presentation puts the camera inside the protagonist’s space. That can make driving, gunfights and conversations feel immediate, but it does not provide the detached, cinematic third-person view that some players associate with Rockstar’s character animations.

Phantom Liberty and choosing an edition

Phantom Liberty adds another substantial storyline. Treat it as an expansion to the main game rather than a separate open world. If you want the fullest narrative package, check whether the edition you are buying includes it; store bundles and naming can change by platform and region.

Pick Cyberpunk 2077 when the words “driving, crime missions and a big modern map” describe your ideal wait for GTA 6. Pick Red Dead Redemption 2 instead if period authenticity and natural environments matter more than city density and technology.

3. Ghost of Tsushima: the best cinematic historical world

Why its landscapes stand out

Ghost of Tsushima is built around visual composition. Saturated fields, mountain views, weather and changing natural landmarks turn travel into a cinematic activity. The world is historically inspired, but its presentation is intentionally heightened: it aims for the feeling of a samurai film as much as for documentary reconstruction.

This makes it a good choice for someone searching for “a beautiful open-world game” or “a realistic-looking samurai game.” The scenery is coherent and recognisable, while the game uses environmental cues to guide you through the island without turning every discovery into a conventional map icon.

Combat and activities

The main action is third-person sword combat, supported by stealth. Encounters reward reading an opponent, controlling distance and choosing when to confront or bypass threats. That is a different fantasy from GTA’s firearms and vehicles, but the deliberate timing can be equally satisfying.

Optional activities broaden the pace. Haiku sequences and bamboo challenges provide quiet breaks from combat and reinforce the sense that exploration is part of the game’s identity, not simply travel between missions.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if you want a polished, cinematic world with strong landscape variety.
  • Choose it if stealth and swordplay appeal more than driving and modern weapons.
  • Choose it if you prefer a clear historical atmosphere without the heavier simulation friction of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Ghost of Tsushima is not a substitute for contemporary crime or traffic systems. Its strength is focused historical adventure: a visually striking island, readable combat and a slower form of discovery.

4. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: the best systemic historical realism

What “realistic” means here

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is the most demanding recommendation on this list. It is an open-world role-playing game set in realistic 15th-century medieval Europe, and it treats the protagonist as an ordinary person rather than an immediately powerful hero.

The game’s friction is deliberate. Bathing matters, saving can require a special drink, and daily activities are connected to the setting instead of being abstract interface actions. These systems can make the world feel more credible, but they also ask for patience and planning.

Trade-offs versus a traditional power fantasy

Expect progression to be earned through practice, equipment and relationships rather than granted at the start. Combat, travel and social situations can take longer to resolve than in an action-focused open world. The payoff is a stronger sense that your character belongs to the world and must operate within its rules.

This is the right choice for readers who ask for “the most realistic medieval open-world game” or who want systems to matter. It is the wrong choice if you want immediate mastery, nonstop set pieces or a modern city with vehicles.

Rank #4
The Witcher 3 Game of the Year Edition (PS4)
  • Includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine expansions, 16 DLC's which offer a massive 50 hours of additional storytelling as well as new features and new areas that expand the explorable world by over a third!
  • Affords access to all additional content released so far, including weapons, armor, side quests, game modes and new GWENT cards!
  • Features all technical and visual updates as well as a new user interface completely redesigned on the basis of feedback from members of the Witcher Community.

How to approach the first hours

  1. Accept the slower onboarding. Early limitations establish the ordinary-person premise rather than indicating that the game is broken or empty.
  2. Learn the survival routines. Pay attention to bathing, saving and other practical requirements before committing to long journeys.
  3. Use the world’s social systems. Treat conversations, equipment and preparation as parts of problem-solving, not chores to skip automatically.
  4. Plan for consequences. A careful approach is often more reliable than trying to force every encounter through combat.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 offers historical immersion at the cost of convenience. It is the most suitable game here for players who want to inhabit a period rather than tour a theme park.

5. Horizon Forbidden West: the best high-detail science-fiction spectacle

Why it belongs on a realistic-graphics list

Horizon Forbidden West is not realistic in premise: its world is shaped by machine creatures, post-apocalyptic technology and distinct human tribes. It belongs here because its environments are exceptionally dense and detailed, with a visual presentation designed to show off landscapes, creatures and weather at large scale.

If your main question is “What is the best-looking open-world game?” rather than “What resembles GTA?”, Horizon is the graphics-first answer. The contrast between natural scenery and mechanical wildlife gives every region a strong visual identity.

Exploration and combat

The game combines open-world travel with ranged and melee combat against machine creatures. Encounters ask you to read enemy parts, movement and vulnerabilities, turning the spectacle into a tactical system rather than a passive sightseeing tour.

Distinct tribes and the post-apocalyptic setting provide a story framework for the locations you visit. The world is imaginative, but the rendering of materials, vegetation, creatures and ruins can still feel remarkably tangible.

When to choose it

  • Choose it for visual impact: it is the clearest showcase for a new display, graphics card or current console.
  • Choose it for science-fiction exploration: machines and ruined environments are the central attraction.
  • Do not choose it for realism of setting: its appeal comes from polished fantasy-science-fiction design, not historical or contemporary plausibility.

Check the current store listing for your platform and edition before buying, because the cited description does not provide a complete platform list.

Platform and edition checks before you start

Platform listings are not permanent: editions, backward-compatibility labels, regional stores and bundles can change. Confirm the current store page for your country before purchase, especially if you are choosing between console generations or a bundle that may or may not include an expansion.

The currently announced GTA 6 target is PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Rockstar identifying PlayStation 5 as the best platform. That makes the current-generation entries in this list the most relevant if you are waiting on the same console family, while the listed PS4, Xbox One and PC versions give older-hardware players additional options where supported.

A practical play order while you wait

  1. Begin with Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want one long, immersive campaign that most closely matches the feeling of a detailed Rockstar world.
  2. Move to Cyberpunk 2077 when you want a sharper change of pace, a dense city and modern criminal activity.
  3. Use Ghost of Tsushima for a cleaner cinematic adventure when you want exploration and combat without a contemporary sandbox.
  4. Try Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 when you are ready for slower progression and systems that demand attention.
  5. Finish with Horizon Forbidden West when visual variety and science-fiction spectacle are your priority.

This order is only a way to rotate moods; the priority table is more useful if you already know which part of GTA 6 you are anticipating.
