Choose by the kind of freedom you want: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition is the best story-first alternative, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the strongest sandbox, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 delivers the biggest party-based JRPG adventure, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus makes exploration about catching and researching creatures. If you want Nintendo’s own physics, puzzles and environmental experimentation, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom remains the benchmark.
“Open world” does not mean exactly the same thing in all five games. Skyrim and The Witcher 3 offer broad, continuous worlds; Xenoblade Chronicles 3 uses huge connected regions; and Pokémon Legends: Arceus is built from open zones. The distinction matters when you are choosing a game to follow Zelda’s seamless exploration.

Quick picks: which Switch RPG fits you?
| Game | Best for | World structure | Combat and progression | Why choose it after Zelda? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition | Story, mature fantasy and consequential quests | Large open world with cities, wilderness and connected regions | Real-time swordplay, signs, alchemy, gear and quest decisions | It replaces Nintendo’s environmental puzzles with dense writing, investigation and choices that change how quests unfold. |
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Player-directed builds and emergent side adventures | Seamless open world with towns, dungeons and faction hubs | Real-time action with skills, equipment, magic and guild progression | You can ignore the main story, build almost any character and let discoveries create your itinerary. |
| Xenoblade Chronicles 3 | JRPG scale, party relationships and exploration | Very large connected regions rather than one uninterrupted sandbox | Real-time party combat, classes, roles, equipment and character development | It offers a long-form, character-led adventure with a huge sense of distance and a deep party system. |
| Pokémon Legends: Arceus | Creature collection and lighter exploration | Several open zones selected from a hub | Creature battles, catching, research tasks and team building | It turns wandering into a loop of observing, catching and completing field research instead of solving physics puzzles. |
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Physics, puzzles and Nintendo-style discovery | Broad, seamless world with surface, sky and underground areas | Real-time action, equipment, crafting and physics-based abilities | It is the reference point for systemic exploration and the clearest choice if you have not played Nintendo’s own follow-up to Breath of the Wild. |
The shortlist reflects current Switch open-world recommendations from Carpenter’s Equip (2026) and Nintendo Life (2026). Their emphasis differs—narrative depth for The Witcher 3, scale for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and freedom for Tears of the Kingdom—so the right winner depends on which part of Zelda you want to replace.
How to compare an “open-world” RPG on Switch
Use five questions before buying. They separate games that look similar in a list from games that feel completely different in play.
#1 Best Overall
- A Tale of Emotion Versus Reason - Follow the journey of Velvet as she embarks on a journey of vengeance towards the murderers of her brother, torn between the person she was and the path her rage has set before her. Can she hold onto who she was, or will vengeance consume all that remains?
- Exhilarating Battle System - Customize your skills to create unique playstyles and defeat your foes by unleashing a flurry of attacks. Engage in exhilarating battles by stealing “Souls” from your enemies to empower your combos.
- A Modern, High-Quality Retelling - Play with new quality-of-life updates, including destination icons, the ability to toggle encounters, early grade shop access, and more.
- An All-Around Experience - Enjoy the immersion with the DLC*, which was launched alongside the original release, including costumes, useful items, and other fun extras.
1. Is the world seamless or divided into large zones?
A seamless map lets you walk, ride or otherwise travel between most destinations without selecting a separate expedition area. Skyrim and The Witcher 3 are the closest matches to that traditional open-world structure. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has enormous connected regions, but its design is more guided by story progression and region transitions. Pokémon Legends: Arceus uses open zones launched from a central settlement. Zones can still feel spacious and exploratory; they simply do not offer one uninterrupted map.
2. What does “combat freedom” mean?
In Skyrim, freedom comes from deciding whether your character is a stealth archer, spellcaster, warrior or a hybrid. The Witcher 3 gives you a defined protagonist but lets you tune sword skills, signs, alchemy and equipment. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 asks you to manage a party, classes and combat roles. Pokémon Legends: Arceus makes your team composition and catching choices central. Tears of the Kingdom focuses on real-time actions, improvised equipment and physical interactions with the environment.
3. Do you want authored quests or self-directed discovery?
Choose The Witcher 3 when dialogue, investigation and consequences are the main attraction. Choose Skyrim when you would rather follow a rumor, enter a cave and discover a faction storyline without a fixed route. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is strongly character- and story-led, while Pokémon Legends: Arceus builds its narrative around fieldwork and research. Tears of the Kingdom rewards experimentation and curiosity more than traditional quest branching.

4. How should progression feel?
Gear and skill choices drive The Witcher 3 and Skyrim. Party composition, classes and relationships drive Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Collection goals and research completion drive Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Tears of the Kingdom combines equipment, crafting and ability-based problem solving. There is no universally better system; the key is whether you prefer improving one hero, managing a group or building a collection.
5. How much technical compromise is acceptable?
Nintendo’s first-party games are designed around Switch hardware. Third-party conversions such as The Witcher 3 and Skyrim are ambitious ports of much larger games. They are valuable because they make substantial open-world RPGs portable, but you should check the exact edition, storage requirement and current performance expectations for your console before purchase. No single independent benchmark is directly comparable across all five games.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition: best for story and consequences
The Witcher 3 is the strongest choice when Zelda’s sense of travel appealed to you but you now want heavier writing and decisions that matter. Nintendo Life’s 2026 RPG guide specifically recommends it to readers looking for another sprawling 3D RPG after Zelda and calls the portable version an excellent experience. Carpenter’s Equip also places it among the leading Switch open-world choices for narrative depth.
What you do in its world
You play a professional monster hunter moving through populated settlements, dangerous wilderness and war-torn regions. The main activity is not simply clearing map icons. You investigate contracts, talk to witnesses, read clues, prepare for monsters and decide how to resolve disputes. A side quest can develop into a substantial story, and the way you respond to people can alter later scenes or relationships.
Why it feels different from Zelda
- More authored storytelling: conversations, motives and consequences are central rather than optional flavor.
- A defined protagonist: you develop Geralt’s abilities instead of inventing an entirely new identity.
- Preparation matters: swords, signs, potions, oils and armor support different approaches to a fight.
- A mature tone: the setting deals with war, prejudice, exploitation and morally compromised choices.
Who should skip it
Do not choose it expecting Zelda’s physics sandbox or a completely open-ended character creator. Its freedom is expressed through exploration and decisions inside a carefully written world. If you prefer fast, low-commitment discovery with minimal dialogue, Pokémon Legends: Arceus or Tears of the Kingdom will be a better fit.
Edition and buying checks
Look specifically for the Complete Edition on Nintendo Switch. Confirm that the listing is for the Switch release, not a different platform, and verify current stock and regional compatibility. The available material does not establish a universal price, so compare the live price for your country and edition rather than relying on an old recommendation.
Rank #2
- Traverse a vibrant world, assemble units and direct them into exquisitely animated battles.
- Perform heroic deeds and grow renown throughout the five nations.
- Cultivate a grand army with over 60 unique characters, from humans and elves to massive beasts and heavenly angels.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: best for a self-directed sandbox
Skyrim is the answer when “open world” means being able to set your own priorities. Current Switch open-world roundups, including Carpenter’s Equip and Nintendo Life’s guides, treat it as one of the platform’s core open-world RPGs.
How its freedom works
You create a character, leave the opening sequence and can pursue the main quest, join guilds, investigate rumors, explore ruins or simply travel. Skills improve through use, so the character you become reflects what you actually do. A player who spends hours sneaking and crafting develops differently from one who relies on heavy weapons and direct attacks.

- Build variety: combat, magic, stealth and crafting can be combined rather than locked to one class.
- Faction storylines: guilds provide structured arcs separate from the central threat.
- Emergent quests: encounters, notes, overheard conversations and unexpected discoveries can become adventures.
- Exploration-first pacing: you can postpone major objectives for as long as you like.
Trade-offs
Skyrim has a looser narrative structure than The Witcher 3. Its characters and quest writing are not the primary reason to play; the appeal is the accumulation of places visited, skills learned and stories you create by choosing what to do next. Its age is also more visible than in newer releases, so buy it for systemic freedom rather than cutting-edge presentation.
Best starting approach
- Spend the opening hours testing several weapons, spells and stealth options instead of committing immediately.
- Follow one faction or local questline to learn the game’s rhythm.
- Keep a practical mix of exploration, combat and crafting so that new discoveries remain useful.
- Return to the main quest when you want a clearer narrative direction; the game does not require you to rush it.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3: best for JRPG scale and party play
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the recommendation for readers who want an enormous role-playing adventure built around a cast rather than a lone customizable hero. Nintendo Life describes the Xenoblade series as massive and sprawling, and the current Nintendo catalog lists a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a listed release date of December 3, 2026.
World structure and exploration
The game’s regions are broad enough to support long treks, optional landmarks and environmental detours. They are best understood as large connected spaces, not as one uninterrupted sandbox in the style of Skyrim. Story progression opens new possibilities, while optional encounters and side activities reward looking beyond the direct route.
Party-based progression
Combat happens in real time, but the strategic decisions concern the whole group. You manage classes, roles, equipment and combinations between characters. That makes progression feel closer to building a team than optimizing one avatar. Relationships and the central cast provide the emotional spine of the journey, so this is a strong choice if you enjoy long-form JRPG storytelling.

What to expect before buying
- The campaign asks for a substantial time commitment and deliberate attention to tutorials and systems.
- Exploration is expansive but more structured than the free-form wandering of Skyrim.
- The appeal is party strategy and character development, not a physics playground.
- Check whether you are buying the original Switch version or the Switch 2 Edition; Nintendo’s catalog lists the latter for December 3, 2026.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus: best for creature-focused exploration
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the lightest and most task-driven option on this list. Current Switch open-world roundups and Zelda-adjacent recommendation guides include it because it makes exploration itself part of the creature-collection loop.
The central loop
- Travel from the hub to an open zone.
- Observe Pokémon behavior and identify opportunities to catch them.
- Use stealth, positioning and battle choices to add species and variants to your team.
- Complete research tasks and return with information that expands your progress.
This structure gives every expedition a clear purpose. You are not merely searching for a shrine or treasure chest; you are studying the environment, filling research objectives and deciding which creatures belong in your party.
How it differs from the other picks
The zones are open but selected from a central settlement, so the game does not provide a single continuous continent. Combat centers on creature matchups and team composition rather than weapon combos or a skill tree. The tone is more approachable than The Witcher 3 or Skyrim, making it a good recommendation for players who want exploration without a dense, mature political narrative.
Rank #3
- Signs of the end times draw powerful heroes from all over sanctuary to rise up and defeat an evil reborn
- Challenge death itself as maltha-angel of death-attempts to harness the infernal powers of the black soul stone
- Commanding the powers of blood, bone, and armies of undead, the Necromancer joins the fight
- Supported play modes-TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode. Game file size:15.7 GB
Switch 2 edition note
Nintendo’s 2026 catalog lists Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a listed release date of October 16, 2025. That listing is for Z-A, not Legends: Arceus; check the product name carefully so you do not confuse the two games when shopping.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: the physics and puzzle benchmark
If you have only played other open-world RPGs and have not played The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, start here before looking for a substitute. Nintendo’s official catalog lists the Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a listed release date of June 5, 2025.
Why it remains the reference point
Tears of the Kingdom makes movement, combat and puzzle solving interact through a physics-driven toolset. You can approach obstacles from multiple directions, improvise equipment and use the environment as part of your solution. That systemic design is the feature most alternatives do not reproduce.
When to choose an alternative instead
- Choose The Witcher 3 if you want dialogue-heavy quests and morally complicated outcomes.
- Choose Skyrim if you want to invent your own character and ignore the intended route.
- Choose Xenoblade Chronicles 3 if a large party, classes and JRPG pacing matter most.
- Choose Pokémon Legends: Arceus if catching and research are more appealing than shrine-style puzzles.
Side-by-side decision guide
| If your priority is… | Pick | What you are buying into |
|---|---|---|
| The strongest written quests | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition | Investigation, dialogue, mature themes and decisions with consequences. |
| Maximum personal freedom | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | A character you shape through skills, guilds, equipment and self-chosen routes. |
| A huge JRPG campaign | Xenoblade Chronicles 3 | Large connected regions, a party of characters, classes and relationship-driven storytelling. |
| Accessible exploration with collection goals | Pokémon Legends: Arceus | Open zones, catching, research tasks and creature-team decisions. |
| Physics and experimentation | The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Systemic puzzles, improvised tools and Nintendo’s own exploration design. |
Buying and setup checklist
Open-world games occupy more storage and demand more uninterrupted play time than a short action game. Before you buy, check the following details on the current store or box listing:
- Correct platform: confirm Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 Edition or another console version.
- Edition contents: verify whether the listing is the Complete Edition or the base game.
- Region: check language, account and cartridge compatibility for your country.
- Storage: make sure the console or microSD card has enough free space for the listed download.
- Update requirements: note whether the physical product requires a download to reach the intended version.
- Play-time fit: choose Pokémon Legends: Arceus for shorter field expeditions, or reserve more sustained sessions for The Witcher 3, Skyrim and Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
- Control preference: test whether you prefer direct action, party commands or creature battles before committing.
Common mismatches and how to avoid them
“I want Zelda’s physics in another game.”
None of the other four games is a one-for-one physics replacement. The Witcher 3 and Skyrim emphasize quests and player agency; Xenoblade Chronicles 3 emphasizes party strategy; Pokémon Legends: Arceus emphasizes observation and collection. Stay with Tears of the Kingdom if physical experimentation is non-negotiable.
“I want a huge map but not a long story.”
Skyrim is the safest fit because you can defer its major narrative and create your own route. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is less suitable if you want to ignore story beats, since its party and progression are closely tied to the campaign.
“I want meaningful choices without a complicated combat system.”
The Witcher 3 offers the clearest quest consequences, but it still expects you to learn real-time combat, equipment and preparation. If that complexity is a barrier, Pokémon Legends: Arceus presents its decisions through catching, research and team building instead.
“I want a traditional JRPG, not a Western sandbox.”
Choose Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Its large regions and optional exploration sit inside a party-led, character-focused structure rather than the faction-and-skill sandbox of Skyrim.
Final recommendation
For most readers seeking a genuinely different open-world RPG after Zelda, buy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition when story quality and quest consequences come first. Pick Skyrim for the broadest self-directed sandbox, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for JRPG scale and party depth, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus for approachable creature-focused exploration. Treat Tears of the Kingdom as the benchmark—and the obvious next purchase if you have not yet played Nintendo’s physics-driven follow-up.
