Best Open-World RPGs to Play While Waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the best starting point if you want a story-rich fantasy world and excellent side quests. Elden Ring is the better choice for unscripted discovery, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II for grounded medieval immersion, and Avowed or Enderal: Forgotten Stories for a first-person fantasy perspective. None is a mechanical replacement for Skyrim. Each reproduces a different part of its appeal, from exploration and role-playing freedom to quest design, combat or world simulation.

The shortlist below is organized by the experience you want rather than by an objective ranking. No release date is established in the sources behind this guide, so these games are recommendations in their own right, not countdown filler.

There is no one-to-one Skyrim substitute

Skyrim combines first-person fantasy, a largely self-directed open world, real-time combat, character customization and a sandbox that lets you wander away from the main quest. The alternatives separate those ingredients. A game can match the exploration while changing the combat, match the medieval setting while removing magic, or deliver deeper narrative choices with a completely different battle system.

Game What it emphasizes Where it diverges from Skyrim Best fit
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Narrative-led fantasy, substantial side quests and a large world You play the defined protagonist Geralt rather than a blank-slate character Players who put writing and quest quality first
Elden Ring Discovery across an expansive world and demanding action combat Less direct guidance and a much higher combat barrier Explorers who enjoy learning through failure
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Historical medieval immersion and simulation-minded role-play No fantasy magic; systems are deliberately grounded Players seeking a believable medieval life
Avowed First-person fantasy setting and RPG combat Do not assume a Skyrim-scale seamless open world Readers who mainly want first-person fantasy presentation
Enderal: Forgotten Stories A Skyrim-built total conversion with its own role-playing experience Requires careful checking of the Skyrim edition and ownership setup Existing Skyrim owners who want a substantial adjacent campaign
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon First-person dark-fantasy open-world exploration A smaller-scale, less mainstream proposition Players willing to try an unusual dark-fantasy world
Baldur’s Gate 3 Deep role-playing, party interaction and consequential choices Party-based, turn-based combat instead of Skyrim’s real-time first-person action Story and character-build enthusiasts
Oblivion Remastered More Elder Scrolls in an updated version of an earlier series entry It is an in-series choice, not a different interpretation of the formula Fans who want Tamriel specifically
Fallout 4 A Bethesda-style sandbox with post-apocalyptic exploration Science-fiction wasteland rather than medieval fantasy Players who value the sandbox more than the setting

These are editorial fits drawn from comparison guides by Plarium (updated in 2026), Pocket Tactics (August 19, 2026), Gamingbible (August 9, 2026) and GameSpot’s earlier roundup. They are not a verified objective ranking.

Choose by the part of Skyrim you miss most

If you want the strongest story and side quests: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 is the clearest recommendation when your favorite Skyrim moments were self-contained stories, memorable characters and side quests that feel worth doing instead of errands placed between dungeons. Its world is fantasy, its map is open and its action is real time, but its identity is narrative-led. The main character is Geralt, a defined protagonist with an established history, so you are inhabiting someone else’s role rather than inventing an entirely blank-slate hero.

That distinction changes how you approach it. Skyrim lets you project almost any identity onto your character; The Witcher 3 asks you to make decisions as Geralt. If you can accept that authored perspective, the game gives you a richer story spine and more deliberately written optional content than a typical sandbox. If creating a character from scratch is non-negotiable, it is not the closest fit even though the setting and open-world format look familiar.

  • Pick it for: a guided central story, extensive side quests and a fantasy world that rewards following its characters.
  • Expect instead: a protagonist with a fixed identity and less freedom to define who the hero is.
  • Skip it if: your priority is an entirely self-authored character rather than narrative quality.

If exploration and discovery matter more than guidance: Elden Ring

Elden Ring is the strongest choice for players who remember Skyrim as a place to get lost. Its expansive world is built around discovery, and the pleasure comes from finding a path, landmark or encounter without being led through every step. The trade is deliberate: combat is substantially more demanding, and the game offers less direct guidance than a heavily quest-marked RPG.

That makes it a poor substitute for relaxed wandering. You need to be comfortable testing approaches, failing and learning before progress feels smooth. The challenge is part of the exploration loop rather than an obstacle the game expects everyone to bypass. Choose it when the unknown is the attraction; do not choose it expecting Skyrim’s low-friction sightseeing or strongly signposted quest structure.

Rank #2
World Order: Diplomacy & Dominance - Board Game Expansion, New Challenges, Strategic Paths & Modes, Double-Layered Automa Board, Ages 14+, 1-4 Players
  • PATHS & MODULES: Expansion introduces new strategic paths and asymmetric modules for each of the four global superpowers. Includes specialized gameplay modules and upgrades originally unlocked during the campaign.
  • AUTOMA RULES: New rules allow you to play solo against one or several automas or to include them into your multiplayer games. With two difficulty levels, they will adapt their challenge to new players and seasoned ones.
  • SUPERPOWER OBJECTIVES: Your objectives now reflect strategic orientations of real-world superpowers. NEW STRATEGIC ASSETS: Discover new tactical possibilities with these 12 new cards.
  • NEW CARDS: 4 new ability cards enhance the game and give more interactions between players. 2 new growth cards sets renew your game experience. Replace or combine with growth cards from base game.
  • SHAPING THE WORLD THROUGH STRATEGY & STRENGTH: Expansion - Diplomacy & Dominance add a new strategic layer to World Order with new challenges and game modes which will test your skills.
  • Pick it for: a huge-feeling sense of discovery and action combat that demands attention.
  • Expect instead: fewer explicit directions and a much steeper difficulty curve.
  • Skip it if: you want the game to explain where to go and let you settle into combat immediately.

If you want medieval life without magic: Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II replaces Skyrim’s spells and creatures with historical medieval immersion. Its appeal is simulation-minded role-play: the setting and systems aim for a grounded interpretation of the period rather than a fantasy playground. The open world still supports roaming and personal choices, but the fiction asks you to behave like a person in a historical society, not a hero assembling supernatural powers.

This is the right answer when “medieval” matters more than “fantasy.” It is also the wrong answer if magic, fantastical races or the ability to solve problems with a spell is what you are waiting to recover. The trade is not a missing feature to be patched later; grounded systems are the point of the game.

  • Pick it for: historical atmosphere, believable role-play and a world designed around grounded systems.
  • Expect instead: no fantasy magic and a more simulation-oriented tone.
  • Skip it if: your favorite Skyrim activities depend on supernatural freedom.

If first-person fantasy is the priority: Avowed

Avowed belongs on this list because it targets the first-person fantasy perspective that many players associate with Skyrim. Its setting and RPG combat are the attraction: you see the world from the character’s viewpoint and engage with it through an action-oriented role-playing framework.

Keep the scope claim precise. The available comparisons do not establish Avowed as a full Skyrim-scale open world, so do not buy it expecting an equally broad, seamless sandbox. Treat it as a first-person fantasy RPG whose presentation and combat may satisfy the specific part of Skyrim you miss, even if its world structure is different.

  • Pick it for: first-person presentation, fantasy setting and RPG combat.
  • Expect instead: a world whose scale and openness should be checked against the current official description.
  • Skip it if: your only acceptable replacement is a massive, unrestricted sandbox.

If you already own Skyrim and want a different campaign: Enderal: Forgotten Stories

Enderal: Forgotten Stories is unusually relevant because it is a total conversion built on Skyrim. That makes it a Skyrim-adjacent option rather than simply another open-world RPG: the foundation is familiar, while the conversion supplies a separate role-playing experience and setting.

Rank #3
The Outer Worlds Xbox One
  • The outer worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi rpg from obsidian entertainment and private division
  • In the outer worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to halcyon, the furthest colony from earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all-vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable

Ownership and edition details matter more here than with a normal purchase. Confirm which Skyrim edition the conversion supports, how it is installed and what the current requirements are before committing. The exact setup can determine whether it is convenient for you, so treat “I own Skyrim” as a starting point, not a guarantee of compatibility.

  • Pick it for: a substantial change of campaign while staying close to Skyrim’s technical foundation.
  • Expect instead: a conversion with edition and ownership requirements to verify.
  • Skip it if: you want a self-contained release with no setup questions.

If you want a darker, less familiar first-person world: Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a first-person dark-fantasy open-world candidate for readers who have already worked through the most famous alternatives. Its value is difference: the tone is darker, the setting is less familiar and the game occupies a smaller-scale, less mainstream lane than the headline recommendations.

That positioning makes it a discovery pick rather than a guaranteed Skyrim replacement. Go in looking for a distinctive dark-fantasy world, not a one-for-one recreation of Bethesda’s sandbox. It is particularly suitable when you have exhausted the obvious choices and want a game willing to take a stranger approach.

  • Pick it for: first-person exploration in a dark-fantasy setting.
  • Expect instead: a less established and smaller-scale alternative.
  • Skip it if: you want a familiar blockbuster structure and broad consensus around what to do next.

If role-playing depth matters more than real-time combat: Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 earns a place on a broad “games like Skyrim” list only when its combat difference is made explicit. It offers deep role-playing, party relationships and consequential choices, but battles are turn-based and party-based rather than Skyrim’s real-time, first-person action.

The result is a different kind of freedom. Instead of roaming alone and improvising with a single character in real time, you manage a group and make deliberate decisions within a structured combat system. The game is a strong fit for players who want choices, builds and narrative consequences; it is not the answer to a craving for first-person swordplay.

  • Expect instead: turn-based battles and a party-based viewpoint.
  • Skip it if: combat must feel like Skyrim’s immediate, first-person action.

If you want more Elder Scrolls, not a substitute: Oblivion Remastered

Oblivion Remastered is the in-series option. It keeps the decision simple: rather than translating Skyrim’s appeal into another setting, you return to The Elder Scrolls and play an updated version of an earlier entry. This is the most direct answer for readers whose priority is Tamriel’s lore, tone and style.

It is not a comparison point for a different franchise’s design philosophy. You are choosing continuity over novelty. Check the current official platform and edition information before buying, because availability details were not established by the comparisons used for this guide.

  • Pick it for: another Elder Scrolls adventure and the familiarity of the series’ world.
  • Expect instead: an in-series experience rather than a new take on the formula.
  • Skip it if: you specifically want a different setting or a new combat and quest structure.

If the sandbox is what matters, regardless of genre: Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is the recommendation for players who value a Bethesda-style sandbox more than medieval fantasy. Its post-apocalyptic setting changes the weapons, scenery and tone, but the reason to consider it is the freedom to explore, pursue side activities and make the world your own at your own pace.

Think of it as a systems-and-exploration substitute. It can satisfy the urge to roam through a large world and decide what to do next, yet it cannot reproduce Skyrim’s fantasy atmosphere. If your favorite memories involve wandering and experimenting, the setting change may be acceptable; if they involve magic and medieval mythology, choose one of the fantasy entries instead.

  • Pick it for: a flexible, Bethesda-style open-world sandbox.
  • Expect instead: a post-apocalyptic science-fiction setting rather than fantasy.
  • Skip it if: the medieval world is the non-negotiable part of your next game.

A practical decision guide

  1. Start with viewpoint. Choose Avowed, Enderal or Tainted Grail if first-person fantasy is the central requirement. Choose The Witcher 3 if you are comfortable following a defined protagonist.
  2. Decide how much challenge you want. Elden Ring is built for players who welcome demanding combat and minimal hand-holding. The Witcher 3 offers a more conventional narrative path, while Kingdom Come: Deliverance II asks for patience with grounded systems.
  3. Separate setting from structure. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II supplies medieval immersion without magic. Fallout 4 supplies a Bethesda-style sandbox in a post-apocalyptic world. Oblivion Remastered supplies the Elder Scrolls setting itself.
  4. Choose your kind of role-playing. Baldur’s Gate 3 is the pick for party decisions and turn-based tactics. The Witcher 3 is the pick for authored storytelling. Skyrim-style blank-slate freedom is not fully reproduced by either.
  5. Check practical compatibility before purchase. Platform and edition information changes, and the comparisons used here do not provide a complete current matrix. Verify the official store or publisher listing for your region. For Enderal, also verify the supported Skyrim edition and ownership requirement.

What these recommendations do not promise

Calling a game “like Skyrim” describes an overlap, not equivalence. A first-person camera does not guarantee the same open-world scale. A fantasy setting does not guarantee character-creation freedom. An open map does not guarantee relaxed exploration, and a deep role-playing system does not guarantee real-time combat.

The most reliable way to choose is to identify the feature you would miss first: writing, discovery, historical immersion, first-person fantasy, Elder Scrolls continuity, sandbox freedom or party-based role-playing. Once that priority is clear, the trade-offs in this list become useful rather than disappointing.
