Best OpenVPN Alternatives You Can Self-Host on a VPS in 2026

Direct WireGuard is the simplest VPS-hosted OpenVPN alternative; Headscale adds self-hosted coordination, NetBird adds centralized management, and SoftEther covers multi-protocol and legacy environments. This guide compares architecture, onboarding, routing, security and maintenance.

For most VPS operators, the best OpenVPN replacement is direct WireGuard. It has the smallest, most transparent stack, but you must manage keys, peer files, routes and changing endpoints yourself. Choose Headscale when you want a self-hosted, Tailscale-compatible coordination layer; choose NetBird when you want a broader, web-managed platform with centralized enrollment and policy controls; choose SoftEther when compatibility with multiple VPN protocols or older systems matters more than a modern WireGuard mesh.

These are not four equivalent products. WireGuard is the encrypted tunnel protocol. Headscale and NetBird add coordination, identity, discovery and policy-management services around WireGuard. SoftEther is a separate, multi-protocol VPN server. Your decision therefore depends less on theoretical speed and more on who operates the control plane, how peers find one another, how much policy and identity management you need, and how much maintenance your VPS can tolerate.

Choose in 60 seconds

Use this decision path before comparing feature lists:

  1. Small number of stable devices, maximum transparency: run direct WireGuard on the VPS and every client.
  2. You want a Tailscale-style client experience but want to operate the coordination service: run Headscale with WireGuard-compatible clients.
  3. You need centralized enrollment, a management interface and organization-wide policies: run NetBird and maintain its self-hosted management service.
  4. You must support several VPN protocols or legacy integrations: evaluate SoftEther instead of forcing every device into a WireGuard-only design.

A hosted control plane can still be useful as a reference point, but it is not the same as self-hosting. In a self-hosted design, your VPS, DNS, firewall, backups and update process become part of the VPN’s availability and security boundary.

What an OpenVPN alternative actually replaces

OpenVPN combines an encrypted tunnel with a server-and-client operating model. Modern alternatives often split that job into layers:

The tunnel layer

WireGuard is an open-source network tunneling protocol that creates encrypted communication channels. Its design goal is to replace older VPN protocols with a simpler, lighter-weight alternative. A direct WireGuard deployment connects peers using cryptographic keys, endpoint addresses and allowed-IP rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The control-plane layer

A control plane tells clients about one another, handles enrollment and identity, distributes policy and helps devices cope with changing network conditions. Headscale is a self-hosted implementation of the Tailscale control plane, built around WireGuard rather than being a new encryption protocol. NetBird supplies a fuller self-hostable management platform and authorizes clients before they form their mesh.

The transport and reachability layer

Peers may connect directly, through a relay when direct connectivity is unavailable, or through a routed gateway. WireGuard itself does not provide a hosted directory or policy service; the operator supplies those pieces. Headscale and NetBird add coordination capabilities, while the exact direct-versus-relayed result depends on network conditions and deployment configuration.

WireGuard, Headscale, NetBird and SoftEther compared

Option Tunnel technology Who operates the control plane Peer discovery and NAT traversal Relay behavior Identity and policy Onboarding Protocol and legacy compatibility VPS exposure and resources Architecture Maintenance burden
Direct WireGuard WireGuard You do; there is no separate coordination service in the basic design Manual endpoints, keys, allowed IPs and routes; endpoint changes are your responsibility Not provided by the basic protocol; use a separate design if a relay is required Cryptographic peer keys and allowed-IP rules; no built-in organization directory Install WireGuard on each device and exchange peer configuration WireGuard-focused Stable public VPS endpoint, firewall controls and bandwidth sized for the workload; no universal CPU or RAM minimum is established Direct point-to-point tunnels, with optional routed or gateway roles Lowest software footprint, highest manual work
Headscale WireGuard under a self-hosted Tailscale-compatible control plane You operate the Headscale service Coordination and client discovery are centralized in your service; reachability still depends on each network Use the behavior supported by your chosen client and deployment; verify whether traffic is direct or relayed during testing Centralized identity, device enrollment and access policy through the control plane Install compatible clients, register them with your service and apply routes or ACLs Modern WireGuard mesh; legacy non-WireGuard devices need another gateway or solution Publicly reachable service endpoint, TLS/DNS and normal VPS hardening; resource requirements are not universally stated Peer mesh with optional routed subnets and gateways More components than direct WireGuard, but less per-peer editing
NetBird Encrypted point-to-point WireGuard tunnels coordinated by NetBird You operate the self-hosted management service Authorized clients receive coordination information and attempt mesh connectivity Direct paths are preferred where available; confirm fallback behavior in your deployment Centralized enrollment and policy management in the management platform Deploy management, install clients, authorize them and assign policies WireGuard-oriented; legacy protocol needs are outside its main use case Public service endpoint, firewalling, backups and enough bandwidth for management and VPN traffic; no canonical universal hardware minimum is stated Managed peer-to-peer mesh, with routed or gateway designs where required Highest platform overhead, strongest central administration
SoftEther SoftEther’s multi-protocol VPN server You operate the server and its authentication configuration Configured through the server and selected client protocols Depends on the protocol and topology you deploy Server-side authentication and access settings; model differs from a WireGuard key-only mesh Choose a compatible protocol, configure the server and provision clients or legacy devices Broadest compatibility and the best fit for mixed or older environments Expose only selected listener protocols, harden the VPS and size bandwidth for the workload; universal hardware figures are not established Can be hub-and-spoke, routed or gateway-centric as configured More protocol choices to secure and document

The table describes architecture, not benchmark results. Authoritative sources for these projects do not provide a single, independently measured 2026 set of throughput, CPU, memory, pricing or user-limit figures that would make a fair numeric ranking.

Direct WireGuard: the minimal self-hosted baseline

When it is the right choice

Choose direct WireGuard for a homelab, a few administrators, a small private network or a stable set of servers where every operator is comfortable editing configuration. It keeps the trust chain short: you run the operating system and WireGuard, and each peer has a key pair plus explicit network rules.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

How the setup works

  1. Provision and harden the VPS. Select a provider and region that meet your latency, bandwidth and jurisdiction needs. Apply operating-system updates, create an administrative account with least privilege, enable the provider firewall and restrict management access.
  2. Give the VPS a stable endpoint. Use a public address or a DNS name that you can keep current. If clients will use IPv6, confirm that the VPS, firewall and client networks all support it.
  3. Install WireGuard on the VPS and every client. Use packages appropriate to each operating system. Keep private keys on their devices; exchange only the public keys needed to define peers.
  4. Create peer configuration. Each peer needs the other side’s public key, an address inside the VPN, an endpoint when initiating toward a known public host, and an allowed-IPs list describing traffic that may use the tunnel.
  5. Decide whether the VPS is a peer, a router or a gateway. For host-to-host administration, advertise only the VPN addresses. To reach a private subnet behind the VPS, add routes deliberately and enable forwarding only where required.
  6. Bring up one test peer. Confirm that the handshake occurs, the peer can reach the intended VPN address and only the expected routes are installed. Test from a second network, such as cellular data, before adding every device.
  7. Document and rotate. Record which key belongs to which device, when it was issued, what networks it may reach and how to revoke it. Replace keys when a device is lost, retired or transferred.

The cost of simplicity

Direct WireGuard does not automatically discover every peer, rewrite endpoint addresses or provide an organization directory. Adding a phone, replacing a laptop, changing a home router or introducing a new subnet means editing the affected peer definitions and routes. That is manageable for a handful of devices and increasingly error-prone as the fleet grows.

Common direct-WireGuard failure modes

  • No handshake: check the VPS public address, firewall rule, client network restrictions and whether the correct public key is installed on each side.
  • Handshake but no traffic: inspect allowed-IPs, duplicate tunnel addresses, operating-system forwarding and routes on the private subnet.
  • Works from one network only: test endpoint reachability and NAT behavior from another access network; a direct path may not be possible everywhere.
  • Unexpected access: narrow allowed-IPs and remove stale peers instead of treating the VPS as a flat trusted LAN.

Headscale: a self-hosted coordination service

What Headscale adds

Headscale is aimed at operators who like the client workflow associated with Tailscale but want to run the coordination service themselves. WireGuard remains the tunnel technology. Headscale supplies the control-plane functions that direct configuration lacks: registering devices, helping them learn about one another and applying centralized identity and access rules.

When to choose it

Headscale fits a technically capable team that wants one place to enroll users and devices while retaining infrastructure control. It is especially attractive when manually maintaining peer files has become the bottleneck but a larger all-in-one platform would be unnecessary.

Deployment sequence

  1. Prepare a dedicated VPS endpoint. Set DNS, firewall rules, backups and an update schedule before enrolling clients.
  2. Deploy the Headscale service. Keep its data and configuration on persistent storage and restrict administrative interfaces to trusted operators.
  3. Install compatible clients. Use the client applications supported by your target operating systems and point them at your self-hosted coordination endpoint.
  4. Enroll devices and users. Verify each registration, assign a clear owner and remove test devices that should not remain trusted.
  5. Define policy and routes. Start with least privilege. Add subnet routes or exit/gateway behavior only for specific use cases, then test from each user group.
  6. Monitor both planes. A healthy control plane does not guarantee a healthy data path. Check that clients receive current peer information and that traffic is actually flowing directly or through the expected fallback.

Trade-offs

You operate another internet-facing service, so DNS, certificates, upgrades, backups and access to the control-plane database matter. Client compatibility and feature parity can differ from a hosted service, so verify the operating systems and policy features your users require before migrating everyone.

NetBird: a managed self-hosted mesh

What NetBird adds

NetBird documents a model in which authorized clients connect to a management service and then form a mesh through encrypted point-to-point WireGuard tunnels. The management service can be self-hosted. This makes NetBird a better fit than hand-written peer files when enrollment, policy and administration need to be visible to a team.

When to choose it

Choose NetBird when the operational value of centralized management justifies running more services. It is suited to organizations with many users or devices, recurring onboarding and offboarding, or policies that should be administered centrally rather than copied into individual files.

Deployment sequence

  1. Map the service components. Decide which management, signaling, dashboard and supporting services you will run, which names they use and which data needs persistent backup.
  2. Provision and secure the VPS. Apply updates, configure firewall rules, protect administrative credentials and place management endpoints behind the narrowest practical exposure.
  3. Deploy the self-hosted management service. Confirm that it is reachable from the client networks you intend to support and that its data survives a restart.
  4. Install clients and authorize them. Enroll one test device per operating-system family, verify ownership and only then roll out invitations or enrollment instructions.
  5. Create groups and policies. Start with explicit device-to-device permissions. Add routed networks or gateway roles only when a documented requirement exists.
  6. Validate the data path. Test an ordinary direct connection, a device behind a restrictive NAT and a routed-subnet case if you use one. Record when traffic is direct and what fallback occurs when it is not.
  7. Operate the platform. Back up management data, rotate administrator credentials, review inactive devices and test upgrades in a staging environment.

Trade-offs

NetBird reduces per-device configuration work but increases the number of moving parts on the VPS. A failed management service can affect enrollment or policy updates even if existing tunnels continue temporarily, so monitoring and recovery procedures are part of the design.

SoftEther: choose compatibility over a pure WireGuard mesh

SoftEther belongs in a different branch of the decision tree. Its value is protocol breadth and integration with environments that cannot use a WireGuard-focused client. That makes it useful for legacy devices, mixed estates or migrations where replacing every client at once is unrealistic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deployment approach

  1. Inventory client constraints. List the operating systems, appliances and legacy software that must connect, and identify which protocols each can use.
  2. Install the server on a hardened VPS. Enable only the listener protocols you actually need and place administrative access behind a restricted management path.
  3. Choose authentication and segmentation. Create separate groups or virtual networks when users, servers and legacy systems should not share unrestricted access.
  4. Configure representative clients. Test one current desktop, one mobile or remote client and each important legacy device before broad rollout.
  5. Document protocol-specific behavior. Record encryption settings, authentication methods, routes and firewall exposure for every enabled protocol.

The trade-off is operational complexity: every additional protocol is another attack surface, client behavior to test and configuration to keep current. If all of your devices can use WireGuard and you do not need compatibility features, direct WireGuard, Headscale or NetBird is usually the cleaner design.

Pick the right network architecture

Point-to-point mesh

Each authorized device can reach selected peers directly. This minimizes the role of the VPS as a traffic bottleneck, but requires coordination and workable network paths. Direct WireGuard can implement a small mesh manually; Headscale and NetBird make larger meshes easier to administer.

Routed private subnets

A VPN peer acts as a router to an office, home or cloud subnet. Use explicit route advertisements and firewall rules. Avoid overlapping address ranges, and decide which side owns return routes before enabling forwarding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gateway or hub-and-spoke

All clients send traffic through a central VPS or gateway. This simplifies policy and egress control but concentrates bandwidth, latency and failure impact. It is often appropriate for controlled access to one private network, not automatically for every site-to-site deployment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

VPS requirements and an operator checklist

None of the canonical project descriptions establishes a universal CPU, RAM or throughput minimum. Size the VPS from the number of concurrent users, encryption workload, routing duties, logging and expected bandwidth rather than from an invented baseline.

  • Stable public endpoint: use a persistent address or dependable DNS name for the service clients must reach.
  • Firewall controls: allow only VPN listeners, management access from trusted sources and the minimum routed-subnet traffic.
  • IPv6, when needed: confirm end-to-end support before advertising IPv6 routes or relying on IPv6-only reachability.
  • Backups and snapshots: protect control-plane databases, configuration, keys or identity records according to each product’s recovery model.
  • Bandwidth headroom: account for whether the VPS carries only coordination traffic or also forwards user data as a gateway.
  • Monitoring: watch service health, disk space, certificate expiry, failed enrollments, handshake or connectivity errors and unusual traffic.
  • Update path: schedule operating-system and VPN-service updates, test changes and keep a rollback snapshot where practical.
  • Administrative separation: limit who can change firewall rules, enroll devices, alter ACLs or retrieve backups.

Security practices shared by every option

Protect keys and identities

A WireGuard private key is equivalent to possession of that peer’s cryptographic identity. Store it in the operating system’s protected credential area, never in a public repository, and revoke the peer promptly when a device is lost. Control-plane systems add user and device identities, so remove stale accounts and review administrator access regularly.

Use least-privilege routes and policies

A tunnel is not a policy. Define exactly which addresses a peer may reach, separate user, server and management networks, and avoid advertising a default route unless intentional. Test both allowed and denied paths after every policy change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate management from data traffic

Restrict VPS administration to a trusted source or private management path. The service endpoint required for enrollment or tunneling should not automatically expose a dashboard, database or shell.

Plan recovery before failure

Keep an offline copy of configuration and recovery credentials, document how to rebuild the VPS, and test restoring a snapshot. For Headscale and NetBird, include the control-plane data store in that exercise; for direct WireGuard, include every peer definition and route map.

Migrating from OpenVPN without a risky cutover

  1. Inventory the current design. Record users, devices, subnets, DNS behavior, routes, gateways and applications that depend on OpenVPN.
  2. Classify clients. Mark devices that can run WireGuard-compatible software, devices suited to a managed client and legacy systems that require SoftEther or continued OpenVPN access.
  3. Build the new VPS service in parallel. Apply firewall and identity policies before inviting production users.
  4. Recreate access deliberately. Translate broad OpenVPN networks into explicit peer routes or policy groups; do not copy permissive access by default.
  5. Pilot with non-critical users. Test remote access, private-subnet routing, DNS, roaming between networks and device replacement.
  6. Run a dual period. Keep OpenVPN available while the new path proves reliable, but track which users remain and set a retirement date.
  7. Revoke and clean up. Remove unused OpenVPN credentials, close obsolete firewall listeners and update documentation after the final cutover.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Clients cannot enroll

Check DNS resolution, service reachability, firewall exposure, system time, client version compatibility and whether the invitation or authorization has expired. For a self-hosted control plane, confirm that the management service itself is healthy before debugging peer traffic.

Clients enroll but cannot reach one another

Confirm that both devices are authorized, that policy permits the destination, that addresses do not overlap and that the client received current peer information. Then determine whether the path is direct or using a fallback relay and test each side’s local firewall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only routed networks fail

Inspect route advertisements, forwarding settings, return routes and subnet firewalls. A successful handshake proves identity and tunnel establishment, not that a third network knows how to return packets.

Performance is inconsistent

Compare direct and gateway paths, check whether traffic is being relayed, inspect VPS bandwidth and CPU saturation, and test from multiple access networks. Do not treat a single speed test as a universal product benchmark; path, region, client hardware and workload dominate the result.

How to make the final choice

  • Choose direct WireGuard if you value a tiny stack, understand networking and can accept manual peer lifecycle work.
  • Choose Headscale if self-hosted coordination and a Tailscale-compatible client model solve your onboarding and discovery problems.
  • Choose NetBird if centralized enrollment, web-managed policy and a broader self-hosted platform justify additional services and operations.
  • Choose SoftEther if multi-protocol support or legacy compatibility is the requirement that eliminates a WireGuard-only design.

Whichever branch you take, the VPS is not a magic privacy box. You still own patching, firewalling, identity or key lifecycle, backups, monitoring and incident response. Start with the smallest architecture that meets your actual access requirements, then add coordination, routing or compatibility layers only when a concrete operational problem demands them.
