For software-encoding a single YouTube stream, VPS-4 is the cautious starting point among OVHcloud’s listed VPS plans. It has the range’s highest listed resources: 8 vCores, 24 GB RAM and 3 Gbps public bandwidth. That is a resource-based recommendation, not a performance guarantee: no cited benchmark establishes which VPS can sustain a particular FFmpeg workload. If FFmpeg only copies packets from an already encoded source, VPS-2 or VPS-3 may be candidates to test; stream-copy avoids decoding, filtering and encoding, so it is a substantially different workload.
The worldwide plan page labels its lineup “VPS 2027.” Specifications and prices can vary by region and change over time. For demanding transcoding, multiple outputs or complex filters, OVHcloud’s own FFmpeg guidance points readers toward dedicated servers.
Choose by what FFmpeg actually does
If FFmpeg stream-copies an already encoded source
When the input already matches the format you intend to send and FFmpeg only remuxes or forwards packets, it does not decode, filter or encode the stream. That usually makes CPU a less demanding part of the sizing decision than it is for transcoding. Consider VPS-2 or VPS-3 as test candidates for a simple copy workload, not as established minimums: the available sources do not benchmark these plans with FFmpeg.
Check that the source can be accessed reliably, the VPS has enough outbound headroom for the stream bitrate, and local storage is adequate for files, logs or temporary media. The ability to copy packets does not itself ensure that the process, source or YouTube ingest connection will remain available.

If FFmpeg encodes video in software
Encoding, for example with libx264, uses CPU resources. Demand depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, filters and the number of outputs. Because those details are not specified and no comparative VPS benchmark is available, VPS-4 is the cautious starting tier within the listed range, not a promise that a given encode will run in real time.
For intensive transcoding, multiple outputs or complex filters, assess a dedicated server as well. OVHcloud’s FFmpeg use-case page promotes dedicated servers for demanding video workloads; that is the provider’s positioning, not proof that every VPS is unsuitable.

OVHcloud VPS plan comparison
The worldwide page accessed on October 3, 2026 labels these plans “VPS 2027.” It lists unlimited traffic and daily backups for the plans below. Prices are the starting prices shown on that worldwide page; regional configurations, availability and prices may differ.
| Plan | vCores | RAM | NVMe storage | Public bandwidth | Starting price shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS-1 | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB | 500 Mbps | $4.54/month |
| VPS-2 | 4 | 8 GB | 75 GB | 1 Gbps | $8.50/month |
| VPS-3 | 6 | 12 GB | 100 GB | 2 Gbps | $12.32/month |
| VPS-4 | 8 | 24 GB | 200 GB | 3 Gbps | $23.37/month |
VPS-4 is the largest listed option across vCores, memory, storage and public-bandwidth tier. The page also lists a 99.9% SLA. An SLA does not establish that an FFmpeg process or a YouTube ingest session will run continuously without interruption; daily backups likewise do not restart a failed process.

Size the stream’s outbound bandwidth
Use YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate you plan to send as a sizing reference. These are YouTube recommendations, not measured minimum VPS network speeds. Allow headroom for protocol overhead and variability, and test the route from your actual VPS location to YouTube: a product page’s public-bandwidth tier does not prove sustained throughput to a particular ingest server.
| Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p30, H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60, H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 4K30, H.264 | 42 Mbps |
| 4K60, H.264 | 50 Mbps |
YouTube recommends RTMPS and says data is encrypted through Google’s servers. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Use settings appropriate to your chosen codec and output, then test before going live.

Set up and validate a 24/7 FFmpeg stream
- Confirm the workload. Identify whether you are stream-copying or encoding. Record the input and output codecs, resolution, frame rate, filters, encoder preset and output count; these determine how meaningful the VPS resource comparison is.
- Choose a starting tier. For software encoding, start cautiously with VPS-4 among the listed VPS choices. For a single stream-copy workload, VPS-2 or VPS-3 can be tested before committing to a larger plan. Consider a dedicated server for demanding encodes or several outputs.
- Prepare the YouTube live output. Create or select the YouTube live stream and use its stream key as the destination credential in FFmpeg. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs or support requests, and rotate it if exposed.
- Set encoder parameters for the intended stream. For RTMP/RTMPS, use YouTube’s applicable codec guidance, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds); select a bitrate based on your output and YouTube’s current recommendations. Prefer RTMPS where supported.
- Run a representative test from the VPS. YouTube recommends a speed test and testing before going live. Test with audio and motion resembling the real program, inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and observe VPS CPU, memory and network use. A short successful launch does not prove the machine can sustain the same workload indefinitely.
- Supervise the process. Configure a service manager or other process supervisor to restart FFmpeg after an exit, and arrange alerting so a restart loop or persistent connection failure is noticed. Confirm that the source remains accessible and that restart behavior reconnects to the intended YouTube event.
- Review YouTube policy and rights. Use media you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music, clips and other embedded material. Continuous availability does not grant rights to copyrighted content, and eligibility or monetization decisions are separate from whether an encoder can send video. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for your channel and content.
What to monitor—and what can fail
- CPU saturation or slow encoding: inspect CPU use and whether the encoder keeps pace with real time. Reduce encoding complexity or output demands, or move to a larger VPS or dedicated server if sustained software encoding cannot keep up.
- Dropped frames or unstable ingest: check the actual outbound route and bitrate headroom, then compare YouTube’s stream-health feedback with server network metrics. Public-bandwidth specifications alone do not diagnose route congestion.
- FFmpeg exits or hangs: inspect process logs and source availability, then verify the supervisor restarts the process and that reconnecting works. A VPS backup is not process supervision.
- Stream stops after a source or event change: verify the media input, YouTube event and stream key are still valid, and that the FFmpeg command points to the intended output. Protect and rotate a key if it may have been exposed.
- Unexpectedly high load: confirm the workflow is not encoding when packet copying was intended, and check filters, resolution, frame rate and number of outputs. Each can alter resource needs.
Cost and reliability trade-offs
Compare the monthly price available in your region with the actual workload, not just the advertised vCore count. The worldwide page’s starting prices and listed resources do not include a benchmark for your encoder settings or a guarantee of end-to-end YouTube uptime. For a continuous channel, budget attention for process supervision, alerting, source availability and recovery testing as well as server capacity.
VPS-4 also carries the highest listed price in this lineup, while a stream-copy workload may not need its CPU capacity. Conversely, choosing a smaller VPS solely because the public-bandwidth figure appears sufficient can be a poor fit if software encoding cannot keep up. Test the real codec, resolution, frame rate, filters and output count before settling on a lower tier.
