The best starting point for Paperclip AI in 2026 is a general-purpose Linux VPS with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM and 50 GB of SSD storage. Install Node.js 24.11.0 or newer with pnpm, use PostgreSQL 17 (or Paperclip’s embedded PostgreSQL for a simple deployment), and put the service behind HTTPS with authentication. The official minimum is lower—1 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM—but agent count and local workloads quickly make that configuration restrictive. No GPU is required because Paperclip orchestrates agents rather than running model inference itself.

What Paperclip AI needs from a host

Paperclip is open-source orchestration software for AI agents. Its repository describes it as “Open-source orchestration for zero-human companies.” It runs on a Linux server; it is not a dedicated appliance or a GPU application. Your hosting decision is therefore about Linux access, Node.js compatibility, memory, storage, database operation and secure web access.

A VPS is the safest default because you control the operating system, Node.js version, package manager, firewall and reverse proxy. Shared hosting is a poor fit: Paperclip needs a supported Node.js runtime, pnpm and server-level access. A managed application platform can work, but it is a different operating model from a traditional VPS.

Paperclip AI requirements in 2026

Component What to plan for Qualification
Operating system Linux VPS SSH and server-level administration are expected.
Node.js 24.11.0 or newer This is the version stated in the official installation guidance. Older third-party guides mention Node 20 or 22, but those figures should not override the current official requirement.
Package manager pnpm Required for a source installation.
CPU and memory 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM for a practical starting point The official guide says 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM is enough to get started; DeployHQ documents 2 vCPU and 4 GB as a minimum for its self-hosting procedure.
Storage 50 GB SSD A practical baseline documented by DeployHQ. Other guides show configurations from 10 GB to 200 GB, depending on workload and retention.
Database PostgreSQL 17, or embedded PostgreSQL Paperclip can create an embedded PostgreSQL instance when launched with paperclipai run. Use an external database when you need independent backups, maintenance or scaling.
Model access At least one Anthropic or OpenAI API key Agents need a provider key to perform model calls. Paperclip itself does not perform local inference.
GPU Not required Inference is performed by the configured model provider, not by the VPS.
Network and access SSH, a registered domain and HTTPS Internet-facing deployments should use TLS and authenticated access.

One version conflict deserves special attention. The official guide requires Node.js 24 or later, specifically 24.11.0 or newer in the retrieved installation instructions, while its example NodeSource command installs a 20.x repository. Do not assume that command produced a supported runtime: check the result with node -v and install a 24.11.0-or-newer release if necessary. The official CLI documentation says Node 22 or 23 may print an unsupported-version warning and continue; that warning is not evidence that those versions are supported.

Which hosting model should you choose?

General-purpose VPS: the default choice

A conventional Linux VPS gives you predictable CPU and memory, root or sudo access, persistent storage and freedom to run a reverse proxy, PostgreSQL and Paperclip together. Choose this route when you want control over upgrades, backups and networking, or when agents may run local processes on the same machine.

Managed application platform: less server administration

Railway offers a one-click Paperclip template. It is a platform deployment rather than a VPS, so networking, persistence, logs and scaling follow the platform’s model. The template sets a 4 GB Node heap ceiling and recommends at least 2 GB once agents run inside the container. Confirm how persistent PostgreSQL storage, domains, authentication and outbound API traffic are handled before treating it as a production deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Docker on a VPS: repeatable deployments

DeployHQ documents a Docker Compose route with a PostgreSQL 17 container and an authenticated production mode. Docker is useful when you want application and database versions pinned together or when you plan to move the stack between servers. It does not remove the need to size the host: containers still consume the VPS’s CPU, memory and disk.

VPS examples and how to compare them

No source in the available evidence ranks one provider as the best Paperclip host, and no current prices were verified. Treat the following as deployment examples, not endorsements.

Option Deployment style Details documented in the guides Best fit
Contabo Cloud VPS Traditional VPS A guide uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 10 GB SSD; its larger sizing advice is 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM and 200 GB NVMe for about 20 concurrent agents. Users who want a conventional Linux server and a clear scale-up path.
Virtarix VPS Traditional VPS An example “Starter” configuration has 3 CPU cores, 6 GB RAM and 50 GB NVMe. A deployment that wants more headroom than the 2-vCPU/4-GB baseline.
SSD Nodes VPS Traditional VPS Its guide describes embedded PostgreSQL on first start and notes that HTTP-webhook adapters pointing to remote agents leave the VPS running mainly Paperclip and PostgreSQL. Remote-agent architectures where local execution is limited.
Railway Managed platform template One-click template with PostgreSQL 17 and a 4 GB Node heap ceiling; 2 GB or more is recommended once agents run in the container. Teams that prefer platform deployment over SSH-managed infrastructure.
AWS, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean or Hetzner Cloud servers Listed by the official documentation as cloud-server choices; a Paperclip-specific price or performance ranking was not established. Teams that already operate in one of these clouds and have established backup and networking practices.

Compare offers using the same axes: Node.js 24.11.0 availability, guaranteed RAM, vCPU performance, SSD or NVMe capacity, snapshot and backup options, region, bandwidth policy, IPv4/IPv6 support, firewall controls and whether Docker is supported. Price alone is not comparable when storage, backups and CPU limits differ.

How much CPU and RAM do your agents need?

Agent workload is the dominant sizing variable. A webhook adapter that calls agents hosted elsewhere consumes far fewer local resources than a CLI adapter that starts processes on the Paperclip server. Each simultaneously active local session can add memory pressure, and several agents may wake during the same scheduling window.

Workload Suggested starting size Why
Evaluation or very small personal deployment 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM Matches the official “enough to get started” minimum. Expect little spare capacity for local agents, database growth or concurrent jobs.
Typical small production deployment 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD Documented by DeployHQ as a minimum and a sensible practical baseline for Paperclip plus PostgreSQL.
Extra headroom or several local agents 3–4 vCPU, 6–8 GB RAM, 50 GB or more NVMe/SSD Provides room for concurrent sessions, logs and background jobs; the 3-core/6-GB example comes from Virtarix.
About 20 concurrent agents 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe Contabo’s sizing guidance for this concurrency level. It is vendor advice, not an independent benchmark or guarantee.

Scale memory before CPU when the symptom is swapping, out-of-memory termination or a growing Node heap. Scale CPU when jobs queue despite adequate free RAM. Keep database and log growth in the calculation: a nominally adequate compute plan can still fail when its disk fills.

Database choices

Embedded PostgreSQL

Launching paperclipai run can create an embedded PostgreSQL instance automatically. This is convenient for a local installation, a trial or a small single-server deployment. It reduces setup work, but the database remains tied to the host’s disk and backup process.

PostgreSQL 17 as a separate service

Several deployment guides plan for PostgreSQL 17, and a Railway template bundles that major version. ServerAvatar’s guide states that Paperclip requires PostgreSQL 17 and that its Drizzle ORM does not support MySQL or MariaDB. Plan for PostgreSQL 17 unless the current official installation page explicitly documents a different supported version.

An external database is useful when you need independent snapshots, a separate failure domain, managed maintenance or multiple application instances. Supply its connection string to Paperclip rather than allowing the application to create its own embedded database.

Native installation on a Linux VPS

The native route has the fewest moving parts, but you are responsible for runtime versions and service management.

  1. Provision the server. Select a Linux image, attach at least 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD for a normal starting deployment, and enable SSH access. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is used in one documented VPS example.
  2. Patch the operating system. Apply the distribution’s security updates before installing application software. Create a non-root administrator and restrict SSH to keys where possible.
  3. Install and verify Node.js. Install Node.js 24.11.0 or newer, then run node -v. Do not rely on an installer example that leaves you on Node 20.x; the official requirement is newer.
  4. Install pnpm. Confirm the package manager is available with pnpm --version. Source installations use pnpm.
  5. Install Paperclip. Use the project’s documented npx or source-install path. Keep the application under a dedicated service account and record the exact version you deploy.
  6. Configure the database. For a simple instance, allow paperclipai run to create embedded PostgreSQL. For production, provide a PostgreSQL 17 connection string and verify that backups can be restored.
  7. Configure model credentials. Add at least one Anthropic or OpenAI API key through the deployment’s secret-management method. Never commit keys to a repository or expose them in client-side JavaScript.
  8. Start the service. Launch Paperclip with paperclipai run, then verify that the process remains running after your SSH session closes by using the service manager recommended for your Linux distribution.
  9. Publish it securely. Point a registered domain at the server, terminate TLS at a reverse proxy, require authenticated access for every user and restrict database ports from the public internet.

One deployment guide reports the application listening on 127.0.0.1:3100 behind a reverse proxy, but that binding was not verified against the official documentation. Treat the port and binding as configuration details to confirm in the version you install rather than hard-coding them.

Docker Compose installation

Use Docker when reproducibility and a bundled database are more important than a minimal host installation. DeployHQ’s documented pattern uses Docker Compose, a PostgreSQL 17 container and authenticated production mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Provision a VPS with enough memory for both containers; the 2-vCPU/4-GB baseline is a practical floor, not a guarantee for many local agents.
  2. Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin from the Linux distribution or Docker’s current instructions.
  3. Obtain the Paperclip Compose configuration from the project’s current installation documentation and review every exposed port, volume and environment variable before starting it.
  4. Set persistent volumes for Paperclip data and PostgreSQL. Without persistent volumes, recreating containers can destroy state.
  5. Enable the authenticated production mode, supply model-provider secrets through an environment file or secret store, and avoid placing credentials in the Compose file committed to source control.
  6. Start the stack, inspect application and database logs, and test a login and a harmless agent operation before exposing the domain publicly.
  7. Back up both the PostgreSQL data and Paperclip’s persistent application data; test a restore on a separate location.

Security checklist for an internet-facing deployment

  • Use a registered domain and HTTPS; do not leave the administrative interface on plain HTTP.
  • Require login for every user. The authenticated deployment mode is the documented production path.
  • Allow SSH only through keys, restrict administrative users and remove unused accounts.
  • Use a host firewall so only SSH, HTTPS and any deliberately published service ports are reachable.
  • Keep PostgreSQL private. Permit database traffic only from the Paperclip application or trusted private network.
  • Store Anthropic and OpenAI keys as secrets, rotate them after suspected exposure and set provider-side usage limits.
  • Apply operating-system, Node.js, Paperclip and PostgreSQL updates during a maintenance window.
  • Maintain backups before production changes and verify that a restore actually brings back agents, schedules and database state.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Unsupported Node.js warning Node 22 or 23, or an older runtime installed by a distribution script Run node -v; move to Node.js 24.11.0 or newer before treating the deployment as supported.
Install works but agents fail to run No model-provider credential or an invalid key Confirm at least one Anthropic or OpenAI key is present, correctly scoped and available to the service process.
Out-of-memory kills or heavy swapping Too many concurrent local sessions for the VPS Check memory while agents are active; reduce concurrency or move to more RAM. The 1-vCPU/2-GB configuration is only a starting minimum.
Database connection errors Wrong connection string, unavailable PostgreSQL or unsupported database engine Use PostgreSQL 17 planning, verify network access and credentials, and do not substitute MySQL or MariaDB.
State disappears after a container restart Missing persistent volumes Inspect Compose volume mappings and restore from a tested backup before recreating containers.
Users cannot connect securely DNS, reverse-proxy or TLS configuration error Verify the domain resolves to the VPS, the proxy forwards to the actual Paperclip listener and the certificate covers the hostname.
Disk fills unexpectedly Logs, database growth or agent artifacts exceed the original allocation Monitor disk usage, rotate logs, prune only data you no longer need and expand beyond the 50-GB baseline when retention requires it.

What will Paperclip hosting cost?

A reliable 2026 price comparison is not established by the available provider material. VPS prices vary by region, billing term, IPv4 allocation, backups, storage type and whether resources are dedicated or oversubscribed. Do not treat a provider’s smallest advertised plan as equivalent to the documented 2-vCPU/4-GB/50-GB baseline.

Build the budget from four recurring items:

  • Compute: the VPS or managed-platform plan sized for your agent concurrency.
  • Storage and backups: SSD/NVMe capacity, snapshots and off-server backup retention.
  • Database: included PostgreSQL, a separate managed database or the operational cost of maintaining your own instance.
  • Model usage: Anthropic or OpenAI API calls, which are separate from server rental.

For a small deployment, starting with one 2-vCPU/4-GB VPS and embedded PostgreSQL minimizes infrastructure components. Move the database out of the host or increase memory when uptime, backup isolation or concurrent local agents become more important than simplicity.

A practical decision framework

  1. Count simultaneous local agents. Include scheduled jobs that can wake during the same interval, not just the number of agents configured.
  2. Choose the deployment model. Pick a native VPS for direct control, Docker for repeatable packaging or Railway for platform-managed deployment.
  3. Set the floor. Use 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD unless your workload is only a short evaluation, in which case the official 1-vCPU/2-GB minimum may suffice.
  4. Reserve growth capacity. Select 6–8 GB RAM for several local agents and consider the vendor-suggested 8-vCPU/16-GB/200-GB tier around 20 concurrent agents.
  5. Verify versions before paying. Confirm that the image can run Node.js 24.11.0 or newer and that PostgreSQL 17 is available or supported.
  6. Plan recovery before launch. Decide where database and application backups live, how often they run and how you will restore them.
  7. Secure the public endpoint. Use a domain, HTTPS, authentication, firewall rules and private database networking.

Bottom line: the best Paperclip VPS is workload-dependent

There is no evidence-based single winner among the named hosting providers. For most first deployments, rent a Linux VPS with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD, verify Node.js 24.11.0 or newer, use pnpm and PostgreSQL 17, and secure the service behind HTTPS and authentication. If agents execute locally and run concurrently, buy memory and CPU for that workload rather than choosing a plan by Paperclip’s minimum. If agents live elsewhere, a smaller VPS may carry only the orchestration layer and database. GPU hardware adds cost without helping Paperclip’s orchestration role.
