For a straightforward Path of the Giant build in Baldur’s Gate 3, take Barbarian through level 10 before adding two Fighter levels. That route reaches the subclass’s key features—Elemental Cleaver at Barbarian 6 and Mighty Impel at Barbarian 10—then adds Action Surge. It is a published option, not a proven best build for every difficulty or party.
What Path of the Giant does in BG3
Path of the Giant is a Barbarian subclass added in Patch 8. Larian says Barbarians choose their subclass at level 3, when this option becomes available. Its defining tools are a larger presence in combat, stronger throwing, a bonus-action kick, an elemental weapon effect, and eventually the ability to hurl creatures or objects. These are Baldur’s Gate 3 mechanics, not a guide to tabletop Dungeons & Dragons rules. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement and its subclass overview describe the subclass and its level-3 unlock.
Level-by-level route: Giant Barbarian 10 / Fighter 2
This progression follows PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build. The guide recommends starting abilities of Strength 17, Dexterity 14, Constitution 16, Intelligence 8, Wisdom 10, and Charisma 8. Treat these scores and choices as one source-backed plan rather than a universal optimum.
| Character level | Class and choice | What you gain or select |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Barbarian 1 | Begin as a Barbarian; use the recommended starting ability scores above. |
| 2 | Barbarian 2 | Continue Barbarian. |
| 3 | Barbarian 3 | Choose Path of the Giant. |
| 4 | Barbarian 4 | Choose Tavern Brawler and add +1 Strength. |
| 5 | Barbarian 5 | Gain Extra Attack and Boot of the Giants, a bonus-action kick. |
| 6 | Barbarian 6 | Gain Elemental Cleaver. |
| 7 | Barbarian 7 | Continue Barbarian. |
| 8 | Barbarian 8 | Choose +2 Strength. |
| 9 | Barbarian 9 | Continue Barbarian. |
| 10 | Barbarian 10 | Gain Mighty Impel. |
| 11 | Fighter 1 | Take Two-Handed Weapon Fighting Style, as in the guide. |
| 12 | Fighter 2 | Gain Action Surge. |
The important trade-off is timing: staying Barbarian through level 10 secures the subclass’s level-6 and level-10 features before multiclassing. PC Gamer notes that whether this route outperforms a Berserker/Thief setup remains uncertain; its guide does not establish a universal winner. PC Gamer’s Giant Barbarian build provides the ability scores and level plan.

How the subclass features work together
Giant’s Rage and throwing
Giant’s Rage increases your size and doubles the Rage damage bonus on Throw attacks. That makes throwing a natural focus for the subclass: you can use attacks at range while the Rage bonus rewards the throw-specific approach.
Boot of the Giants
At Barbarian level 5, Boot of the Giants gives you a bonus-action kick. Its chance to succeed depends on Athletics and improves when you are hidden or invisible. It is a class action—not a pair of boots to find or equip. The BG3 Wiki’s Path of the Giant entry and its Boot of the Giants entry describe the feature.
Rank #2
Elemental Cleaver
At level 6, Elemental Cleaver lets you choose a listed elemental damage type while raging. The affected weapon gains the Thrown property and deals an additional 1d6 damage of the chosen type; when thrown, it returns to your hand. This is the subclass’s key bridge between weapon choice and a throw-focused combat loop. The 1d6 value is the BG3 Wiki’s listed game mechanic; the cited page does not state a publication date.
Mighty Impel
At level 10, Mighty Impel lets you throw a Medium-size-or-smaller creature or object. This supports close-range control and repositioning as well as spectacle, but the cited build material does not quantify its damage or compare its effectiveness across encounters.
Rank #3
Choose a combat focus
| Focus | What to build around | Practical trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Throw specialization | Giant’s Rage’s doubled Rage damage bonus on throws, Elemental Cleaver’s thrown weapon and return effect, and throw-supporting gear. | Consider whether the encounter’s terrain and your party’s positioning make throws practical; thrown attacks can create friendly-fire or placement concerns. |
| Close-range control | Boot of the Giants at level 5 and Mighty Impel at level 10 for kicking or moving enemies and objects. | Uses bonus-action opportunities and requires getting close enough to act on targets. The cited sources do not compare this approach’s performance with throwing. |
Pick based on the range you enjoy, how you want to spend bonus actions, when you want the subclass milestones, your party’s needs, and whether throw-friendly terrain is available. The available build sources do not provide controlled tests by difficulty or party composition, so neither focus can be called objectively strongest on that evidence.
Gear to seek for the throw route
PC Gamer names these in-game items for its Giant Barbarian route:
- Returning Pike
- Ring of Flinging
- Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo
- Balduran’s Giantslayer
The same guide also points to examples from a broader thrower gear list: Caustic Band, The Mighty Cloth, Lightning Jabber, and Enraging Heart Garb. These are optional gear examples, not additional classes or required purchases. The cited build passage does not establish their acquisition locations, so consult a current item reference in-game or in a dedicated game guide before planning a route around a particular drop. The listed equipment consists of loot within BG3, not physical accessories.

The Giant Barbarian is available in BG3 from Barbarian level 3, and the route above gives a concrete way to reach its level-6 and level-10 features before taking Fighter levels. The sources cited here do not establish damage benchmarks, win rates, popularity, or a difficulty-specific ranking. Patch 8 is the documented baseline for the subclass; because later game updates can change mechanics, check current patch notes and in-game tooltips if a feature behaves differently in your version.
