There is no evidence-based universal winner among PC controllers for Soulslike games: the available sources establish compatibility and features, not comparative comfort, latency, or in-game performance. Start by checking support for the specific game, then choose a layout and connection method that suit your PC and preferences. The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless is a feature-oriented option with documented Windows setup; the Xbox Wireless Controller is a straightforward comparison if you prefer its familiar layout.
How to choose a PC controller for a Soulslike
Use the game’s own store listing as your first compatibility check. A controller that works with Steam generally is not automatically guaranteed to provide every feature, expected button prompts, or the same setup in every game.

- Game support: Look for the game’s controller-support label and any named controller types. Elden Ring’s Steam listing specifies Xbox Controllers and Full Controller Support: Elden Ring on Steam.
- Connection: Compare the exact model’s wired, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz options with your PC and preferred setup. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the chosen connection rather than assuming all controllers pair the same way.
- Layout: Xbox-style and symmetrical stick layouts are preference choices, as are face-button labels. Pick the arrangement that feels familiar and comfortable to you.
- Remapping: Extra buttons can provide additional binding options, but whether they make a control scheme easier is personal—not a demonstrated performance advantage.
- Fit and budget: Consider hand size, grip, and price for yourself. The cited sources do not provide comparable ergonomic tests or current prices.

8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless: for extra mapping choices
8BitDo’s Steam compatibility listing includes the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, and its product page documents connecting the adapter dock to a Windows PC: 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller. If the controller’s software and your game setup allow it, you might map a rear button to sprint, dodge, or item cycling. Treat that as an experiment in personal preference; the available sources do not show that these bindings improve performance.

Valve’s June 26, 2024 Steam Input update reported that Xbox controllers accounted for 59% of Steam controller sessions. That is Steam-wide usage, not a Soulslike-specific survey or evidence that a particular controller will fit your hands. Elden Ring’s Steam page separately lists Xbox Controllers and Full Controller Support, making the Xbox layout a relevant option to compare for that game.

What Steam controller support does—and does not—tell you
Valve said in its June 26, 2024 update that Steam Input enabled support for more than 300 controllers, custom button bindings, and community configurations. The update also reported: “Since 2018, daily average controller use has tripled from ~5% to up to 15% of all sessions.” Those figures describe Steam use and Steam Input, not Soulslike-specific preferences or controller performance. Steam’s “Full Controller Support” label is useful, but it is not a guarantee that a game uses every capability of a controller. Valve explains: “However, Full Controller Support does not necessarily mean that the game makes use of every feature on the controllers.” Check both the game’s listing and the functions you care about; the label alone does not confirm rear-button support or another model-specific feature.
