Choose thumbstick tension by comparing the Elite Series 2’s three mechanical settings with the same topper and sensitivity curve; choose a topper by comfort, reach, and control. There is no Xbox-endorsed best setting for a particular game or player, so make the choice by testing one variable at a time.
What the tension and shape settings change
The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 lets you change stick resistance mechanically with the included adjustment tool. Xbox lists three tension settings but does not publish force measurements or rank them by performance. The Xbox Accessories app separately offers thumbstick sensitivity curves, which change how stick input is translated. These are distinct controls: tension changes the physical feel of moving the stick, while the curve changes the response to that movement. Xbox does not publish a formula for combining them. Xbox lists three topper shapes—classic, tall, and dome—but does not recommend a shape for a specific game or claim that one improves accuracy. Treat shape as a fit choice, not a performance upgrade.
How to compare the three tension settings
- Pick a consistent starting setup. Fit one thumbstick topper and leave the Xbox Accessories app sensitivity curve and in-game sensitivity unchanged. Start with the setting that feels like a middle ground to you; this is a practical starting point, not an official Xbox recommendation.
- Test each of the three positions. Use the included adjustment tool to select each setting. In the same game or training mode, make the same kinds of movements and notice the perceived resistance and whether the stick feels controllable.
- Change only tension during the comparison. Keep the topper, app curve, and in-game settings fixed. Make small, repeatable comparisons rather than switching several settings at once.
- Choose the lightest resistance that still feels controllable to you. If none feels right, repeat the comparison with another topper or sensitivity curve—but change only one of those variables at a time.
This method helps isolate your own preference; it is not a published Xbox test protocol or evidence that any position improves aim. A higher-resistance setting does not automatically mean greater precision, and no particular curve is established as a compensation for a particular tension setting.

How to choose a thumbstick shape
Xbox lists classic, tall, and dome toppers. Compare them by how they feel in your hand and during the movements you actually make, keeping tension and sensitivity constant while you swap shapes.
- Comfort: Does the contact surface feel comfortable during a normal session?
- Reach: Can you reach and move the stick through the directions you use without strain?
- Control: Does the topper feel manageable during the games you play?
A taller topper is one option to try if you want to assess reach or leverage, but Xbox’s cited product information does not establish that it increases accuracy or is best for shooters. The Complete Component Pack for Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 lists four interchangeable toppers: two classic, one tall, and one dome.

Check which toppers come with your controller
Package contents differ between the full Elite Series 2 and Elite Series 2 – Core listings. The U.S. full Series 2 listing includes two additional classic toppers, one dome, one tall, an adjustment tool, charging dock and cable, four paddles, an additional D-pad, and a carrying case. The Core listing includes the controller, adjustment tool, and USB-C cable. Microsoft’s full Series 2 page and Core page provide the listed contents.
If you have a Core controller and want alternate or spare toppers, the Complete Component Pack is a possible option; it is not required just to use the controller. Check the current listing for your region and retailer before buying, because bundle contents can vary or change. A simple decision rule
- For tension, choose the setting that feels controllable with the least resistance you prefer.
- For shape, choose the topper that feels comfortable, reachable, and manageable in your games.
- When comparing either, keep the other physical and software settings fixed so you can tell what changed.
