There is no universal graphics-and-audio preset that makes every PC horror game more immersive. Start with the game’s recommended or medium preset at your display’s intended resolution, then adjust for stable performance, useful detail, clear audio, and your own comfort. Ray tracing, upscaling, spatial audio, and accessibility controls are game-specific—not guaranteed options.
Start with a stable baseline
Choose the game’s recommended preset, or Medium if it has no clear recommendation, and set the resolution you intend to play at. Test a representative dark or effects-heavy scene rather than judging performance from a quiet menu. If the game publishes hardware targets, use those as a starting point; they describe that game, not a universal PC requirement.
For example, PlayStation’s Until Dawn PC performance guide lists 1080p at 60 FPS on Medium as its recommended tier. Its higher tiers target different resolutions or frame rates and call for stronger graphics hardware. These are publisher specifications, not independent benchmarks, and do not establish one frame rate that every player needs for immersion.
Choose visual effects by their cost to your experience
Ray tracing
Turn on ray tracing only if your game and hardware support it, then compare the result in scenes where shadows or reflections matter. Keep it enabled if you prefer the visual effect and performance remains acceptable; otherwise, turn it off. Until Dawn lists ray-traced shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion. Returnal’s published PC configurations include a separate, demanding ray-tracing tier. PlayStation recommends performance-enhancing upscaling when Returnal’s ray-traced reflections and shadows are enabled.

Upscaling
If native rendering does not meet your performance goal, test an upscaler the game actually supports before lowering several quality settings at once. Check the game’s own menu and documentation for available options and versions. Until Dawn, for instance, lists DLSS 3.7 and FSR 3.1, including frame generation on supported hardware. Those features are examples from that game, not standard options across horror titles; results depend on the specific implementation and hardware.
Resolution and preset trade-offs
Higher resolutions and quality presets can require more capable hardware. A publisher’s specifications can help you choose a starting tier, but they are not a promise that every PC will deliver the same experience in every scene. Change one setting group at a time and revisit a demanding section so you can tell whether the trade-off is worthwhile.

Set up audio from the game outward
Check the game’s audio menu first. If it offers a 3D or spatial-audio mode, follow the game’s stated output requirements and choose the matching in-game preset where needed. Returnal’s PC page says its 3D audio modes require stereo headphones or compatible speakers.
Some games also depend on an operating-system or headphone-audio setting. CD PROJEKT RED’s Dolby Atmos for Headphones instructions explain that it can be used with any headphones and direct players to enable Windows spatial sound and select the corresponding Cyberpunk 2077 audio preset. This is a title-specific setup example, not evidence that spatial processing improves every game.

Stereo gaming headphones are one optional output choice, not a requirement to buy new equipment. The relevant question is whether your game and audio setup support the mode you want to use.

Motion, field of view, and dark scenes
- Motion blur: Reduce or disable it if it makes movement uncomfortable. Bethesda’s Redfall options guide notes that turning it off may help players experiencing motion-related discomfort.
- Field of view: Adjust it to your preference, but do not assume wider is always better. Bethesda warns that a higher FOV in Redfall can affect performance and graphics quality.
- Brightness and contrast: Tune these on your display so dark scenes remain legible without washing out the image. There is no single ideal value established for all monitors and rooms.
Dialogue, volume, and access options
Use subtitles if they help you follow dialogue or suit your accessibility needs. Check the particular game’s menu for separate dialogue, effects, music, and cinematic volume controls rather than compensating for unclear dialogue by raising every sound. Redfall documents separate sliders, subtitles, font scaling, screen narration, and colorblind filters. EA’s Dead Space initial-settings guide lists menu narration, subtitles, voice language, and content warnings. These controls vary by game.

A practical tuning order
- Set a baseline: Select the game’s recommended or Medium preset and your intended display resolution.
- Check a demanding scene: Play through a dark or effects-heavy area and decide whether performance feels stable enough for you.
- Test costly effects selectively: Compare ray tracing on and off if supported; keep it only if its visual effect is worth the performance cost to you.
- Try supported upscaling if needed: Use an option documented by that game, then reassess performance and image quality before lowering other settings.
- Configure audio: Match the game’s audio mode to your output device and enable any required system setting or in-game preset.
- Adjust comfort and access: Tune motion blur, FOV, brightness, contrast, subtitles, narration, and volume controls according to your needs.
