What changes between the qualification stages?
The 2026 Cologne Major: three stages for 32 teams
The Major divided its 32 teams into successive 16-team stages. Eight advanced from Stage 1, then eight from Stage 2, and Stage 3 narrowed the field to the eight playoff teams. That progression meant teams played through three preliminary stages before the single-elimination bracket.
Match length also changed as the tournament progressed. In Stages 1 and 2, only advancement and elimination matches were Bo3; the other matches were Bo1. Stage 3 used Bo3 for every match. The playoffs then used Bo3 quarterfinals and semifinals, followed by a Bo5 final.
The announced 2027 regular IEM: a 16-team play-in, then two groups
The regular 2027 event has a different entry structure. Sixteen teams begin in Stage 1, where a double-elimination bracket sends eight onward. Those eight join eight direct entrants in Stage 2, which is split into two double-elimination groups. Four teams from each group qualify for the eight-team playoffs.

All matches in both 2027 group stages are announced as Bo3. Compared with the 2026 Major’s Bo1 matches in parts of Stages 1 and 2, that means the announced regular event uses longer matches throughout its preliminary stages. The formats should not be treated as universal templates: the comparison applies to these specific editions.
Are the playoff formats the same?
Both editions use an eight-team single-elimination playoff and a Bo5 final. Their quarterfinals and semifinals are Bo3. The announced 2027 regular IEM adds a Bo3 third-place match; the 2026 Major format described by ESL did not list one.

The similar playoff bracket does not make the tournaments equivalent. The 2026 Major’s route to those eight teams ran through three stages and began with 32 teams. The announced 2027 regular IEM starts with 24 teams, has eight direct Stage 2 entrants, and uses two groups to complete qualification.
Which stages can fans attend, and what is the arena experience?
Major 2026: live access expanded to Stage 3
ESL opened Stage 3 to live attendance for the first time in IEM Cologne history, extending the in-person event beyond the playoffs. The playoffs took place at LANXESS Arena. In its post-event recap, ESL FACEIT Group reported 67,000 fans from more than 75 countries across nine tournament days. That is an organizer-reported attendance figure, not an independent count.

Regular IEM 2027: four announced arena playoff days
ESL has announced four days of playoff matches in front of a crowd, August 12–15, at LANXESS Arena. The announced 360-degree stage places the competition in a central arena layout. The schedule includes quarterfinals, semifinals, a third-place match and the grand final, spreading the eight-team playoff across four days. The 2027 event is in the future, so its published schedule and stage plan may change.
Tickets and seating for the 2027 event
The official IEM Cologne 2027 event page lists one-day and four-day ticket choices, upper- and lower-level seating, reserved seating and an IEM+ upgrade. It states a minimum attendance age of 16 and describes sales in waves. Ticket prices and availability can change; check the official event page for current details before making plans.

What audience figures were reported for the 2026 Major?
ESL FACEIT Group’s July 2026 recap reported more than 100 million hours watched and 2.75 million peak viewers for the IEM Cologne Major 2026. These are organizer-reported figures; the cited recap does not provide an independent audit or viewing methodology. An earlier May 2026 announcement had forecast more than 50,000 attendees from over 70 countries, but that was an advance estimate, not the completed-event total.
