The best PC graphics settings for Borderlands 4 depend on your GPU and resolution. Start with the official NVIDIA or AMD profile for your graphics card, then tune from there. If you have an RTX 4070, one independently tested balanced starting point is medium settings for most options, low foliage and volumetrics, balanced upscaling, and motion blur set to 0. These profiles are starting points—not guaranteed results for every PC or game build.

What performance do Borderlands 4’s PC requirements target?

2K’s requirements page, published June 17, 2025 and updated May 29, 2026, gives two performance targets. They are publisher expectations, not guaranteed frame rates in every scene.

Target CPU Memory GPU Other requirements
1080p, 30 FPS, Low Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 16 GB RAM NVIDIA RTX 2070, AMD RX 5700 XT, or Intel Arc A580; at least 8 GB VRAM Windows 10/11 64-bit, DirectX 12, 100 GB available storage on an SSD
1440p, 60 FPS, Medium Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 32 GB RAM NVIDIA RTX 3080, AMD RX 6800 XT, or Intel Arc B580; at least 12 GB VRAM Windows 10/11 64-bit, DirectX 12, 100 GB available storage on an SSD

Use the official Borderlands 4 PC system requirements to check your setup. Meeting a target spec does not establish that every area will maintain the listed frame rate.

Which graphics profile should you start with?

Use the official profile for your GPU and resolution

The official AMD and NVIDIA guides vary settings by card and resolution, so use the closest matching profile rather than copying one made for a much faster GPU. Their settings are vendor targets, not independent performance guarantees.

For instance, AMD’s 1080p RX 5700 XT profile targets 60+ FPS with FSR Quality, low geometry and textures, and most effects low. Its RX 6800 XT profile allows much higher detail in several categories while retaining FSR Quality and frame generation. At 1440p, the RX 6700 XT profile shifts to FSR Balanced and low foliage, fog, clouds, and shadows. NVIDIA’s 1080p RTX 2070 profile targets 30 FPS with DLSS Quality and mostly low settings; its RTX 5090 1080p example targets 60+ FPS with DLSS Performance, DLSS frame generation, and 4x multi-frame generation. These differences show why a settings recipe should match the GPU and display resolution.

RTX 4070 balanced starting settings

PCGamesN tested the following combination on an RTX 4070. It is a useful starting point if you have similar hardware, not a universal best preset:

Rank #2
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5070 WINDFORCE OC SFF 12G Graphics Card, 12GB 192-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, WINDFORCE Cooling System, GV-N5070WF3OC-12GD Video Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070

  • PCIe 5.0
  • NVIDIA SFF ready
Setting Starting point
Upscaling DLSS Balanced on NVIDIA; use FSR or XeSS on compatible non-NVIDIA cards where available
Frame generation On if supported and you find the result acceptable
HLOD loading range, geometry, textures, texture-streaming speed, shadows, lighting, reflections, shading, post-processing Medium
Foliage density, volumetric fog, volumetric clouds Low
Motion blur amount 0.0

In that PCGamesN test, the RTX 4070 averaged 134 FPS at 1080p, 126 FPS at 1440p, and 85 FPS at 4K. The corresponding 1% lows were 51, 50, and 33 FPS. Those are results from that outlet’s test, not predictions for another PC; the gap between averages and lows is a reason to assess consistency as well as peak performance. The guide was published in September 2025, and these figures have not been established as current-build results for October 2026.

How should you use upscaling and frame generation?

Upscaling is a built-in way to trade some image clarity for performance. 2K says an available DLSS, FSR, TSR, or XeSS method can improve frame rates. In Borderlands 4, find it at Options > Visuals > Advanced > Resolution Scaling. Choose the method supported by your GPU, then start with the quality level in the matching vendor profile.

On Windows 10, 2K says Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling must be enabled and the PC rebooted for upscaling to work. According to the support guide, it is enabled by default on Windows 11. See 2K’s PC troubleshooting and optimization guide for the setting and further details.

Frame generation is available only on supported hardware and profiles. Treat it as an optional setting to test, not a fix for stutter or poor responsiveness. In PC Gamer’s 2025 launch-period RTX 5090 test, DLSS Performance raised average frame rate but looked somewhat fuzzy; the outlet did not establish that frame generation improved how the game felt. That test averaged about 40 FPS indoors at 4K on Badass without upscaling or frame generation, illustrating that even a high-end card can benefit from the right performance settings.

How to tune Borderlands 4 without misreading performance

  1. Check your hardware against the publisher’s targets. Confirm your CPU, GPU VRAM, RAM, and SSD meet the relevant requirements; the targets are 1080p/30 FPS on Low at minimum and 1440p/60 FPS on Medium for recommended hardware.
  2. Update your graphics driver. 2K includes driver updates among its PC troubleshooting steps.
  3. Load the closest GPU-and-resolution profile. Start with the appropriate official AMD or NVIDIA chart rather than a high-end example from a different card.
  4. Enable an available upscaler. Use Options > Visuals > Advanced > Resolution Scaling, and check the Windows scheduling requirement if you are on Windows 10.
  5. Change a small number of settings, then give the game time. Shader compilation is estimated at about 10 minutes on most PCs. 2K advises playing for at least 15 minutes after graphics changes before judging performance.
  6. If shader compilation takes far longer than expected, restart. 2K suggests rebooting the game and PC; its guide also explains how to clear the shader cache for NVIDIA and AMD. Clearing the cache may affect shaders used by other programs.
  7. Compare frame consistency, not just average FPS. Note whether the problem is a low average, uneven frame delivery, or stutter in particular areas before changing more settings.

When do graphics settings stop helping?

A GPU-bound problem can often respond to lower detail or a more performance-oriented upscaler. But not every hitch is caused by graphics quality. PC Gamer reported that its minimum-spec-class CPU reached full utilization in large outdoor areas, and that lowering graphics or increasing upscaling did not eliminate outdoor stutters. If frame delivery is still uneven after a reasonable graphics adjustment, CPU saturation or a game-side issue may be involved; the available tests do not establish a universal fix.

No reviewed source establishes a controlled, current-build ranking of the FPS cost of every individual setting. Make incremental changes and judge them in play rather than assuming one option is always the most expensive.
