Rockstar’s official tuning guidance covers the PC game generally, not modded-area testing, and warns that graphics settings affect performance differently across systems. Start with the in-game quality slider, then benchmark and tune settings on your own PC at your chosen resolution.
Start with a baseline, not a preset
Record your CPU, GPU and available VRAM, system RAM, display resolution, graphics API, installed mods, and the balance you want between frame rate and image quality. Those details determine whether a setting change is useful; the official guidance does not prescribe universal values for this scenario.
At your chosen resolution, use the in-game quality slider as a quick starting point. Treat the result as a baseline, not as a preset proven optimal for large modded areas. Rockstar says, “Depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.” Rockstar’s PC graphics tuning guide was last updated April 30, 2024.
Tune the settings Rockstar prioritizes first
Change settings in small groups, then run the built-in Graphics Benchmark and compare both frame rate and image quality. Rockstar’s tuning guide identifies these settings as the first group to adjust, but does not specify a universally best value for any of them:

- Water quality
- Volumetric quality
- Near volumetric resolution
Keep a simple record of each change and its benchmark result. If an adjustment improves performance but makes the image unacceptable to you, revert it and test another setting. The benchmark helps compare settings on your configuration; it is not evidence of performance in every modded area.
Refine the remaining graphics options
Once the first group is tuned, Rockstar’s guide also lists these options for adjustment. Test them methodically rather than assuming a particular low, medium, or high value is best:

- Textures, lighting, shadows, far shadows, and tessellation
- Screen-space ambient occlusion and global illumination
- Volumetric lighting and far volumetric resolution
- Triple buffering, particles, and mirrors
For modded play, repeat your checks in the kinds of locations and conditions you actually explore. This is practical advice: Rockstar’s cited tuning guidance does not specifically benchmark mods or large modded areas. A benchmark result may not capture the same workload as your chosen modded location.
Use VRAM guidance only for an out-of-memory error
If the game reports ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM, treat Rockstar’s VRAM guidance as troubleshooting, not as a general-purpose graphics preset. Its error-specific article suggests beginning with the Video Memory meter at about 66% of available video memory, then lowering settings if memory problems continue. Rockstar’s published PC requirements give historical reference points, not a guarantee of smooth performance in modded areas. Last updated April 30, 2024, they list the following: Rockstar’s system requirements.

Rockstar cautions that requirements can change as game content and code change. These figures are useful comparison points, not a reason by themselves to buy a particular graphics card or proof that a system meeting them will reach a specific frame rate with mods.

Switch graphics APIs only as a troubleshooting step
If the game fails during graphics initialization, Rockstar documents switching between Vulkan and DirectX 12 as a troubleshooting option. The official article does not rank either API as faster overall. Its instructions use the Advanced Graphics setting and system.xml; it also describes clearing files whose names begin with sga_. Follow Rockstar’s steps only when troubleshooting an initialization error, and avoid editing or deleting configuration files casually when the game is working: Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT instructions, last updated June 12, 2024.
What the official performance notes do—and do not—show
Rockstar’s October 29, 2019 notes for PC Title Update 1.15 report improved performance on high-end CPUs “when displaying large amounts of particle effects at once.” That is a narrow note about that update; it does not establish that lowering particle settings or upgrading a CPU will improve performance in the large modded areas you play.
