If your PS5 looks wrong or performs worse after a system update, first identify what changed: the screen may be blank, flickering, using an unexpected resolution or refresh rate, or the console may have a system-feature or performance problem. Check the video signal and display connection before using Safe Mode; if the update itself failed, retry the update before considering a reset or reinstall. A symptom appearing after an update does not by itself prove the update caused it.
Start with the symptom and the video signal
If the PS5 reaches its home screen, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The console detects the connected TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically. This screen shows the connected HDMI device’s resolution, VRR, and HDR details; you can inspect the signal and change the resolution here. See PlayStation’s PS5 resolution and video output guide.
- Blank screen or no usable picture: use Safe Mode’s video-output options.
- Flicker or unexpected HDR, VRR, resolution, or refresh-rate behavior: test video output settings and the HDMI/display chain.
- System-feature trouble or a general performance drop: consider the relevant Safe Mode maintenance options.
- Update error or incomplete update: retry the update before attempting a reset or reinstall.
Fix a blank screen or incompatible display mode
Safe Mode starts the console with only basic functions active. Its Change Video Output options include Change Resolution and Change HDCP Mode, which Sony lists as possible blank-screen troubleshooting steps. Safe Mode requires the console to be off when you begin.
- Turn off the PS5 by pressing the power button. If it is on, wait until the power indicator goes dark.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Select Change Video Output, then try Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode as appropriate.

Test flicker, refresh-rate, VRR, or HDR settings
Change one setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment affects the picture. Sony recommends trying a lower Video Transfer Rate when the screen flickers; this limits some higher-bandwidth output modes and may improve picture quality, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every image or performance complaint.
- Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set Video Transfer Rate to -1. If flicker continues, try -2.
- If you see unexpected behavior at 120 Hz, turn 120 Hz Output off and check whether the symptom changes.
- If a game behaves unexpectedly with VRR, turn off Apply to Unsupported Games and test again. VRR behavior depends on the TV.
These adjustments can change which output modes are available. Recheck the picture and the connected-device details in Video Output after each change. Sony’s guidance is in its resolution and video output guide.

Check the TV, HDMI port, cable, and any intermediary equipment
A signal problem can come from the display chain rather than the console’s software. This matters especially when troubleshooting 4K at 120 Hz: the TV must support the mode, and the PS5 must be connected through a suitable port and cable. A receiver or other device between the console and TV can also affect the signal.
- Confirm that the TV supports the output mode you want and has current firmware.
- Check that the PS5 is connected to the TV’s correct HDMI port. Consult the TV’s documentation if you are unsure which port supports the required mode.
- If a receiver or other intermediary is in the chain, test the PS5 connected directly to the TV.
- Try the HDMI cable included with the PS5, if available. If it is unavailable, damaged, or unsuitable for the target mode, Sony recommends an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Review the PS5’s resolution and Video Transfer Rate settings in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
Sony’s 4K and 120 Hz guidance covers these compatibility checks. A higher-rated cable is relevant only when the display setup needs that signal capability; it is not a universal fix for post-update performance problems.

Use Safe Mode for system-feature issues or performance drops
If the console still works but you are experiencing a system-feature issue or performance drop, Sony specifically suggests Clear System Software Cache. Start Safe Mode using the power-button and USB-controller steps above, then select this option. Sony describes it as an option for these kinds of issues; it does not promise that clearing the cache will fix every graphics complaint.
Rebuild Database is a separate maintenance option. It scans the drive and creates a new database of content. Sony lists it for system-feature issues or when a deleted game icon remains on the home screen; it should not be treated as a guaranteed graphics fix. If the system-software update failed, retry it
If the PS5 reaches the home screen, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings to check for and install the update. If the console cannot complete the update that way, Sony’s Safe Mode update guidance describes retrying from Safe Mode or updating manually with a USB drive.
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create folders on the drive named PS5 and, inside it, UPDATE.
- Download Sony’s official PS5 update file and save it in the UPDATE folder with the filename PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Connect the drive to the PS5, start Safe Mode, and choose the system-software update option. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Use Sony’s instructions and official file from Update PS5 system software in Safe Mode. If the update completed successfully and the problem is only a display or performance symptom, manual reinstallation is not the first step.

Know what data a reset or reinstall affects
Reset and reinstall options are more destructive than changing video settings or clearing the system software cache. Read the on-screen warning carefully before confirming an action.

Sony’s system-software update guidance covers reinstalling software and backing up data. Use reinstall only as a last-stage recovery step when less destructive troubleshooting has not resolved a failed update or persistent system problem.
When to contact PlayStation Support
If the issue persists after the relevant display, Safe Mode, or update steps, contact PlayStation Repairs through Sony’s support guidance. Have the error code, the affected game or screen, and the steps you have tried ready. A symptom that began after an update does not, on its own, establish that the console needs hardware repair.
