There is no single best Red Dead Redemption 2 PC preset. Rockstar says that each graphics setting can affect performance differently depending on the system configuration, so the dependable approach is to establish a baseline, use the in-game quality slider for a quick starting point, then tune advanced settings in a controlled order and verify every change with the built-in benchmark.
Start at your normal play resolution, change one setting or one small group at a time, and judge both frame-rate consistency and visible image quality. The goal is not the highest number in an isolated test; it is a stable image in the areas and scenes where you actually play.

What “smooth” means in RDR2
A smooth result has two parts: sufficient average frame rate and consistent delivery from frame to frame. A setting that produces a higher average but introduces obvious hitching is not necessarily an improvement. Compare changes using the same resolution, API, scene and benchmark run, and record what you changed so you can undo a regression.
Rockstar’s official tuning guidance does not publish a universal preset or a guaranteed frame-rate target. Its support article, last updated April 30, 2024, states: “Note: Depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.” Treat every recommendation below as a repeatable method rather than a promise that a particular option will save a fixed number of frames.

Set a baseline before changing anything
- Use your real play resolution. Do not benchmark at 1080p if you normally play at 1440p or 4K. Resolution changes the workload and can change which settings matter most.
- Write down the current state. Record the resolution, graphics API, quality-slider position and any custom advanced values. This gives you a known rollback point.
- Choose a repeatable test. Use the same in-game location or route for subjective checks, then run Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test after each meaningful change.
- Observe consistency, not only the headline average. Note hitching, sudden drops, texture or lighting changes and whether traversal feels steadier.
- Change one setting, or one tightly related group, at a time. If several unrelated options move together, you cannot tell which change helped or caused a problem.
Rockstar recommends experimenting with advanced settings and running the benchmark to confirm the balance between performance and quality. The controlled loop above is a practical way to apply that advice without assuming a gain that has not been measured on your PC.
Check what your PC is expected to run
Rockstar’s PC store page lists the following minimum and recommended specifications. They describe eligibility, not a guaranteed frame rate at a particular resolution or quality level. Rockstar also notes that requirements can change with downloadable content and programming changes.
| Category | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8 GB | 12 GB |
| Graphics | Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 2 GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3 GB | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 4 GB |
| Disk space | 150 GB | 150 GB |
The minimum and recommended columns are not benchmark tiers. They do not establish that the game will be smooth at 1080p, 60 frames per second or any other target. The PC version also requires the Rockstar Games Launcher and a Social Club login for installation, activation and online play, plus an internet connection for activation, online play and periodic entitlement checks.

Use the quality slider for the fastest first pass
The in-game quality slider is Rockstar’s quickest optimization route. According to the April 30, 2024 support guidance, it analyzes the PC’s capabilities and adjusts background parameters according to the selected resolution and whether you prioritize performance or quality.
- Open the game’s Settings menu and select Graphics.
- Move the overall Quality slider toward performance if your baseline is unstable, or toward quality if you have headroom.
- Apply the change and note which individual settings moved.
- Run Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test, then check the same gameplay scene you used for your baseline.
The slider is a starting point, not a final answer. If the image is acceptable and frame delivery is stable, keep it. If one visual feature matters particularly to you, use the advanced menu to restore or lower that feature while leaving the rest of the slider’s choices intact.

Manual tuning: Rockstar’s first-priority settings
For finer control, Rockstar lists these options first: MSAA, Reflection Quality, Water Quality, Volumetric Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution. The order is Rockstar’s tuning sequence, not a numerical ranking of frame-rate gains. Test each option at your own resolution and hardware.
Multisampling Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)
MSAA changes edge smoothing and can have a noticeable visual effect on geometry. Lower it one step, run the benchmark and inspect distant lines, foliage and moving edges in your normal scene. If the image becomes too jagged for your display, restore the previous value and look for a different trade-off rather than assuming the lowest setting is best.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Reflection Quality
Reflection Quality affects the fidelity of reflective surfaces. Compare wet roads, water and polished objects in the same location before and after a change. Keep the lower value only if the reflection loss is acceptable and the benchmark or frame consistency improves.
Water Quality
Water Quality is easiest to judge near rivers, lakes and rain-soaked surfaces. Make a single-step change, then check both the benchmark and a representative water scene. Do not infer that a change will behave identically in every area; the workload can vary with weather, camera angle and scene complexity.
Volumetric Quality
Volumetric Quality controls the quality of atmospheric effects such as fog, haze and light shafts. Compare a scene with visible mist or sunbeams, and look for improved consistency during movement as well as any loss of depth or softness.

Near Volumetric Resolution
Near Volumetric Resolution is the final option in Rockstar’s first group. Check nearby fog and light effects at the distance where you normally ride or walk. If lowering it produces an unwanted near-field change, keep the higher value and tune another option in the next group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSecond-pass settings for image-quality refinement
Once the first group is balanced, Rockstar lists the following settings for further refinement. Use the table as a checklist; it does not imply that every option has the same performance cost on every PC.
| Setting | What to inspect | Controlled adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Temporal Anti-Aliasing | Edge stability and motion clarity | Change one level, then inspect moving foliage, fences and camera pans for shimmer or softness. |
| Texture Quality | Surface detail on characters, buildings and terrain | Compare close-up materials and distant texture loading; keep the highest level that remains stable on your system. |
| Lighting Quality | Light sources, interiors and transitions between shade and sun | Test an indoor-to-outdoor route and retain the lower value only when its visual loss is acceptable. |
| Shadow Quality | Shadow definition and stability during movement | Inspect character and building shadows at the same time of day in your test scene. |
| Screen Space Ambient Occlusion | Contact shading around objects and corners | Compare doorways, ground contact and interior corners; revert if the scene looks unnaturally flat. |
| Anisotropic Filtering | Clarity of surfaces viewed at an angle | Inspect roads, floors and terrain receding into the distance before accepting a lower value. |
| Far Shadow Quality | Distant shadow detail | Use a long sightline or elevated viewpoint and check whether distant shadows matter to your play. |
| Tessellation Quality | Geometric detail on selected surfaces | Compare the same close-up objects and keep the setting that offers the best detail-to-consistency balance. |
| Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing (FXAA) | Additional edge smoothing and softness | Toggle or adjust it only after evaluating your main anti-aliasing choice; inspect fine lines and text. |
| Volumetric Lighting Quality | Light shafts and atmospheric illumination | Use a scene with strong sunbeams or haze and compare motion through the effect. |
| Triple Buffering | Frame delivery behavior with the selected display and synchronization setup | Test it in the same benchmark and gameplay scene; judge smoothness rather than assuming it increases average frame rate. |
| Global Illumination Quality | Indirect light and bounce in interiors and shaded areas | Compare rooms, porches and shaded streets where bounced light is visible. |
| Particle Quality | Dust, smoke, sparks and other particle effects | Use a scene with smoke or dust, then verify that any improvement does not create distracting visual reduction. |
| Mirror Quality | Reflections in mirrors and similar surfaces | Inspect interiors containing mirrors and keep the lower setting only if those reflections are unimportant. |
| Far Volumetric Resolution | Distant fog, haze and light volumes | Use a long view across a valley, town or weather effect and compare distant atmospheric detail. |
After each adjustment, apply the setting, run the benchmark and repeat the same gameplay check. If two settings interact, test them separately first, then test the combination once you know each individual result.
A repeatable benchmark loop
- Record the baseline. Write down the quality slider position, advanced values, resolution and API.
- Pick one change. Move a single option by one available step, or change a deliberately related pair such as the two volumetric options.
- Run the built-in test. Use Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test with the same resolution and API.
- Check gameplay. Revisit the same route or scene and look for stutter, traversal drops, shimmer, blur or lighting changes.
- Keep or revert. Keep the change only when the performance or consistency improvement is worth the image-quality cost.
- Log the result. A short note such as “Reflection Quality down one step; benchmark steadier; wet-road reflections acceptable” is enough to make later troubleshooting possible.
Rockstar publishes no cross-hardware FPS statistic or fixed percentage gain for these settings. The benchmark gives you evidence for your PC; the official minimum and recommended specifications are not substitutes for that measurement.
Vulkan or DirectX 12: which is smoother?
Neither official source establishes a universal speed winner. Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT support article, last updated June 12, 2024, allows players to switch between Vulkan and DirectX 12 through the advanced graphics settings in system.xml. That guidance is for troubleshooting a graphics-initialization error, not a blanket recommendation to use one API for higher FPS.

Compare the APIs only on your own system. Keep the resolution and graphics values identical, change the API, restart if the game requires it, run the same benchmark and replay the same scene. Evaluate the result using these four criteria:
| Criterion | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Smoothness | Average frame rate plus consistency, traversal hitching and visible stutter. |
| Image quality | Whether the same settings render the scene identically or expose artifacts. |
| System configuration | GPU, CPU, memory, resolution and the current game build. |
| Reliability | Whether the API launches and renders correctly on your configuration. |
Rockstar’s historical update notes document configuration-specific problems that included a DirectX 12 memory leak that could increase RAM use during extended sessions, Vulkan stuttering on some multi-GPU systems and crashes when graphics settings exceeded available video memory. The notes say those issues were fixed in the corresponding updates. They are evidence that behavior can depend on configuration, not proof that the same problems remain in a current build or that one API is generally faster.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to troubleshoot stuttering and launch failures
Stutter appears after changing several settings
Return to the recorded baseline, then reapply changes one at a time. Run the benchmark after each change and use the same scene. This isolates the setting or combination responsible instead of forcing you to guess.
The game reports ERR_GFX_INIT or will not start
- Use the advanced graphics settings in
system.xmlto switch from Vulkan to DirectX 12, or from DirectX 12 to Vulkan. - Install current graphics drivers for your GPU.
- If the problem persists, reset the game’s settings files and rebuild your configuration gradually.
- Once the game launches, restore your normal resolution and retest before adding further quality changes.
These steps reflect Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT troubleshooting guidance. Switching APIs should be treated as a reliability test, not as an automatic performance upgrade.

Performance degrades during a long session
Compare both APIs with the same settings and note whether memory use or hitching changes over time. Rockstar’s update notes describe a historical DirectX 12 memory-leak issue and say it was fixed in the relevant update; they do not establish that current versions still have it. If your current build behaves differently, record the duration and settings so you can reproduce the result while testing the other API.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
You use more than one GPU
Rockstar’s historical notes mention Vulkan stuttering on some multi-GPU configurations and say the issue was fixed in the corresponding update. If stutter is specific to that setup, compare APIs and confirm that the game is using the intended GPU, then retest on the current build. Do not generalize the historical note to every Vulkan system.
The game crashes after raising quality
Undo the last change and lower the settings that you raised, then rerun the benchmark. Historical Rockstar notes mention crashes when graphics settings exceeded available video memory and say that problem was fixed in the associated update. Current behavior can still depend on the available memory and configuration, so avoid treating the recommended specification as permission to max every option.
Make decisions by trade-off, not by a preset label
Use the following decision rules when the benchmark and visual check disagree:
- Higher average, worse hitching: reject the change and keep the steadier configuration.
- Small performance improvement, major visual loss: restore the setting and test a different option from Rockstar’s list.
- Clear visual loss, no measurable improvement: revert immediately; the setting is not helping your system in that scene.
- Different APIs trade places across scenes: choose the API that is more reliable in your normal play, not the one that wins a single run.
- No meaningful difference: leave the higher-quality value in place and move to the next setting.
This approach preserves the image features you care about while concentrating compromises where your own benchmark shows a real benefit.
