There is no universally best spot; choose according to your routes, supplies, and tolerance for nearby creatures.
How to choose a base location
Judge a site by more than its view or buildable space. Compare the practical costs that will shape everyday trips:
- Water and analysis: Check access to water and a Field Station or analyzer.
- Threats: Consider which hostile creatures are nearby and whether your regular activity may draw them toward the base.
- Building supplies: Estimate how easily you can bring materials to the site, not just whether they are available nearby.
- Travel: Prioritize the regions and resources you expect to visit most. A central site can reduce repeated trips to distant corners, even if it is not beside a specialized resource hub.

Which location fits your play style?
For a first base: start by checking near the Oak Lab
The Oak Lab vicinity is a useful balanced candidate if you want early materials, water, and access to analysis in reach. It is not a promise of safety: nearby bugs are a concern, and later-game destinations can be a long way off. Check the precise site in your current game before committing to a large permanent build.
For a pond base: solve the supply route first
A lily pad offers a flat footprint and convenient access to the pond, but the plank-carrying problem can make construction awkward. A bridge can address that bottleneck; consider the route for moving materials before choosing the pad itself.

For an elevated build: weigh the Hedge’s connections against spider exposure
The Hedge’s connected branches and ziplines lend themselves to a linked, elevated base, with water and materials described as nearby. That convenience comes with spider exposure below and within the Hedge, so inspect the route and surroundings before building there.
For flexible travel: look for a central position
If your plans take you across several parts of the yard, a central site may save repeated trips. It can still be a poor fit if it leaves you far from water, analysis, or a resource area you use often. Compare the actual journeys you expect rather than choosing a point based on the map’s apparent midpoint.

Plan for threats, even at a well-chosen site
Obsidian’s official Grounded page warns: “However, nowhere is safe – not even your base.” The page also says that interfering with yard creatures increases the chance they will come knocking. A convenient location should not be mistaken for a protected one.

The named-location recommendations above come from guides published in 2021, and GameWith’s selection-criteria guide was updated in 2022: GameWith’s guide. Obsidian’s official 1.0 release notes document later additions, including the Eastern Upper Yard and new building content such as ash as a Tier 3 building material and the Pebble Path. Those notes establish that the game’s map and building options developed after early access; they do not confirm that older location hazards or rankings remain optimal in every later version.
