The strongest choices depend on how you fight, which skills you have already raised, and whether you value damage, staying power, companions, or exploration and interaction. Use the build examples below as starting points, then weigh each perk’s benefit against the skill and earlier-perk requirements needed to reach it.
How to choose the best perks for your character
Perks are one part of a larger character system that also includes backgrounds, traits, skills, and flaws. Obsidian describes them as sharpening a character’s edge, while flaws create trade-offs that can sometimes become opportunities. That framing matters: a perk is useful when it supports the character you are building, not simply because its name sounds powerful. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement explains the system.
- Match the playstyle. Decide whether you want stealth and ranged attacks, melee, or a companion-led approach to combat.
- Account for prerequisites. A desired perk may require skill investment and earlier perks, so consider the full route rather than only its final reward.
- Prioritize the payoff you need. Choose among damage, survivability, companion effectiveness, and exploration or interaction utility according to what your character lacks.
Perks become available at even character levels, and later tiers can depend on previous perk purchases, according to PCGamesN’s October 24, 2025 overview. It gives Pickpocket as an option unlocked by Lockpick 1, and Sleight of Hands as an advanced example that depends on Pickpocket and Lockpick 8. Those examples illustrate how prerequisites can shape a build; the article says its catalog is incomplete, so it should not be treated as a definitive list of every current perk.
Best perks and priorities by build
Stealth and ranged damage
For a distant-damage, rogue-assassin approach, use Sneak, Speech, and Lockpick as core specializations, with Guns and Observation as supporting skills. Xbox Wire’s staff-build feature names Space Ranger, Assassin, Sharpshooter, Ghost, Stalker, Pickpocket, Trick Shot, Face Reader, Keen Observer, Through the Keyhole, Bag Check, Eden Windage, Charlatan, Sleight of Hands, and Tall Tale Teller among Liz Ackerman’s choices. Her Barbie build is an example of a coherent stealth-and-ranged character, not a universal best-in-slot prescription. The feature also lists Aza and Inez as companions for the build. Choose this direction if you want to shape encounters with stealth and distance and are willing to invest across several skills. The named perk selection spans combat, stealth, observation, and interaction; use the ones that serve your own priorities rather than trying to copy the full list regardless of prerequisites.
Companion-led defense
If you want companions to do much of the damage, prioritize Leadership to improve companion damage and health, then consider Melee for a defensive role built around taking less damage while blocking. Obsidian QA Analyst Joshua Ledford described his approach this way: “I like this build because I can complete a lot of combats by getting enemy attention and then just standing there and holding block with my melee weapon while my companions kill things.” This is a staff member’s experience, not a controlled comparison proving the build is strongest.
Rank #2
This route suits a character who draws enemy attention, blocks, and supports companions instead of competing with them for the main damage role. Its value depends on whether that combat rhythm is enjoyable to you.
Melee-focused combat
A melee-only run is another viable direction, though the available example is not evidence that melee is objectively optimal. In a November 6, 2025 Xbox Wire follow-up, QLOC FQA Tester Mateusz Błażewicz said: “It is a melee only build that was able to get me through the hardest difficulty despite the added challenge of restricted weaponry and only one companion.” Treat this as an attributed example of a build completing that challenge, not as a guarantee for every character or difficulty configuration. Check current patch behavior before committing
Perk-related behavior and difficulty options can change with updates. Obsidian’s Patch 1.2.0.0 notes document a Custom difficulty option, including toggles such as Companion Permadeath and zero-bits play. They also list a fix for the Dependent Flaw’s companion damage bonus persisting after loading, and clarify that Inez displays a maximum of two ability charges after acquiring the relevant perk.
These notes are useful for checking specific mechanics, but they do not provide a comprehensive perk balance ranking. For that reason, a definitive current tier list cannot be inferred from them. Check the latest patch notes for changes that may affect a perk or companion interaction you plan to rely on.
