Best Phone Controllers for Turning Your Smartphone Into a Handheld

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people, buy the Backbone One (2nd Generation) in the connector version that matches your phone. It is the simplest plug-and-play way to turn an iPhone or Android phone into a handheld-style system, with passthrough charging and a 3.5 mm headset jack. Choose the Razer Kishi V2 instead if you prefer a similarly direct wired connection and Android touch remapping. Choose the GameSir G8 Galileo for the most substantial Android grip, or the GameSir G8+ MFi when you want full-size controls with a USB-C iPhone or iPad mini.

The first buying decision is not the brand: it is your phone’s port and operating-system support. Newer iPhones use USB-C, older iPhones use Lightning, and the original G8 Galileo is officially Android-only.

The short list

Controller Best for Official phone support Notable features
Backbone One (2nd Generation) Most people and easiest setup USB-C and Lightning versions for compatible iPhone and Android phones Native-port connection, passthrough charging, 3.5 mm audio, compact design
Razer Kishi V2 A direct wired alternative USB-C and Lightning versions Low-latency wired connection, passthrough charging, Android touch remapping through Razer Nexus
GameSir G8 Galileo Long Android sessions Officially Android-only Full-size grips, Hall-effect sticks and triggers, two programmable rear buttons, passthrough charging, 3.5 mm audio
GameSir G8+ MFi Full-size controls for USB-C iPhone, iPad mini and Android USB-C iPhone, iPad mini 6 or later, and Android 8.0 or later MFi certification, Hall-effect controls, improved case clearance

These are different answers to the same problem. The Backbone is the travel-friendly choice; the two G8 models prioritize a wider, console-like grip; and the Kishi V2 sits between them with a compact wired design and a software touch-mapping option on Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There was no independent laboratory latency or durability testing available for this comparison. “Low latency” describes the direct wired design documented by Razer, not a measured millisecond result.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Start with the connector and operating system

USB-C versus Lightning

A controller must match the physical port on your phone. Newer iPhones use USB-C, while older iPhones use Lightning. Backbone One and Razer Kishi V2 are sold in separate USB-C and Lightning versions, so buying the wrong edition is the most basic compatibility mistake.

A USB-C controller is the relevant choice for a USB-C iPhone, supported Android phones and the USB-C iPad mini models covered by GameSir’s G8+ MFi documentation. A Lightning controller is for compatible older iPhones. Do not assume an adapter will provide the same fit, power or software behavior as the correct native connector.

Android support is not identical across models

The original GameSir G8 Galileo is officially Android-only. That qualification matters: unofficial tests with other phones or operating systems do not change the product’s stated support. The GameSir G8+ MFi has a broader published range: USB-C iPhone, iPad mini 6 or later, and Android 8.0 or later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backbone and Kishi V2 each have USB-C and Lightning product lines, but you still need to select the edition that matches both your phone and the games or apps you intend to use. Check the current compatibility list for the exact model before ordering, because phone and operating-system support can change.

Check your case before you order

Phone controllers hold the handset between two grips. A case can add enough thickness to prevent the connector from seating or the phone from locking into the controller, even when the phone itself is supported.

  • Look up the controller’s case-clearance guidance and compare it with your case’s thickness, camera bump and edge design.
  • Be prepared to remove a bulky or rugged case for a reliable fit.
  • Confirm the exact connector SKU; USB-C and Lightning versions are not interchangeable.
  • For the G8+ MFi, improved case clearance is one of the documented changes, but it is not a promise that every case will fit.
  • Do not generalize a fit from one phone generation to another. The camera area, port position and case lip can differ even when the phones look similar.

Razer describes the Kishi V2’s extendable bridge as holding modern smartphone models securely. That is a design claim, not a guarantee for every case combination, so test the fit with the case removed first and then consult the model-specific clearance information.

Backbone One (2nd Generation): the best plug-and-play choice

The Backbone One (2nd Generation) is the default recommendation when you want the least friction. It plugs directly into the phone’s native port, rather than relying on Bluetooth pairing, and is sold for both USB-C and Lightning phones.

Rank #2
Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Its practical advantages are the features you use every session: passthrough charging lets the phone charge while the controller is attached, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack provides wired audio. Backbone says the controller works with controller-compatible games from the App Store and Google Play, as well as compatible cloud and remote-play apps.

The compact, slim design makes it easier to carry than a full-size controller. That portability is also its main compromise: the grips and controls do not occupy as much space as the G8 models. If you play for short commutes, travel or occasional remote sessions, the reduced bulk is usually more valuable than a larger palm rest. If you play for several hours at a time, compare the grip size in person when possible.

Who should choose it

  • iPhone owners who want a straightforward controller and know whether they need Lightning or USB-C.
  • Android users who value a slim travel setup.
  • Players who need both passthrough charging and a 3.5 mm headset connection.
  • Anyone who wants one controller to cover supported mobile games plus compatible Xbox, PlayStation, Steam or other cloud and remote-play apps.

What to verify

Confirm that the listing says “2nd Generation” and that the connector matches your phone. A controller-compatible game is required; the Backbone does not turn every touch-only game into a gamepad title automatically.

Razer Kishi V2: a direct wired alternative

The Razer Kishi V2 uses the phone’s USB-C or Lightning port for a direct connection. Razer documents passthrough charging and describes the wired design as low latency. It also uses tactile controls and a stable, extendable bridge intended to keep the phone secured while you play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The feature that most clearly separates the Kishi V2 is touch remapping through Razer Nexus on Android. Where a game does not expose gamepad controls, the Android software can map controller inputs to on-screen touch locations, subject to the game’s rules and the service’s policies. This is not an iOS feature in the documentation cited here, and it is not a universal workaround for games that prohibit or technically block overlays.

Who should choose it

  • Android players who specifically want touch remapping in addition to ordinary gamepad support.
  • Players who prefer a direct wired connection and passthrough charging.
  • People who want a compact alternative to a full-size grip.

Limits to understand

Touch mapping is Android-only, and each game or service can impose its own rules. Use it only where permitted. As with Backbone, choose the correct USB-C or Lightning edition and check case clearance before purchase.

GameSir G8 Galileo: the comfort pick for Android

The G8 Galileo is built around comfort rather than minimum size. TechRadar describes full-size grips, Hall-effect sticks and triggers, two programmable rear buttons, passthrough charging and a headphone jack. Those controls and the wider deck are better suited to long sessions than a slim travel controller, especially if you prefer the hand position of a conventional console pad.

Rank #3
PopSockets Adhesive Phone Grip, Holder- Black | Anti-Drop, Kickstand, Secure Comfortable Hold, Black, Create a Mobile Phone Outfit
  • Secure Hold: Our PopSockets adhesive phone grip gives your cell phone a secure, comfortable hold in hand to help prevent drops while texting, taking photos, or scrolling on the go. Designed to stick firmly to most phone cases and devices.
  • Hands-Free Made Easy: Easily turn your PopSocket into a phone stand to prop up your phone anywhere, perfect for watching videos, video calls, or following recipes. A must-have phone holder that keeps your device secure and ready for anything.
  • Compatibility: Works with all phones, tablets, and Kindles. Sticks best to smooth, hard plastic cases and may not adhere to silicone or textured cases. Easily swap your PopTop to change up your style.
  • Black PopSockets: Simple, refined, and endlessly versatile. A timeless essential for any phone.
  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

Hall-effect sticks and triggers use magnetic sensing rather than the traditional contact arrangement. In practical terms, the feature is intended to reduce the wear mechanism associated with physical potentiometer contacts, but the available material does not provide an independent durability test or a guaranteed service life. Treat Hall-effect hardware as a design advantage, not proof that a particular unit cannot fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is size. The larger deck takes more room in a bag and is less convenient when you want to slip the controller into a pocket or small case. It is also officially Android-only. Do not buy the Galileo for an iPhone on the strength of an unofficial compatibility report.

Who should choose it

  • Android players who spend long sessions on cloud gaming, remote play or native mobile games.
  • Players who want full-size grips, rear buttons and Hall-effect controls.
  • Anyone who needs both a 3.5 mm headset jack and passthrough charging in a larger format.

GameSir G8+ MFi: full-size controls for USB-C iPhone and Android

The G8+ MFi is the full-size option when your phone uses USB-C and you want broader official coverage than the Android-only Galileo. TechRadar reports MFi certification, iOS and Android app support, Hall-effect controls and improved case clearance. Its published compatibility includes USB-C iPhone, iPad mini 6 or later and Android 8.0 or later.

The larger grips make it a better fit for extended play than a compact controller, but they also make it less portable. Choose it when comfort and control space matter more than the smallest possible setup.

TechRadar listed the G8+ MFi at $79.99, £79.99 or AU$129.99 at the time of its 2026 review. Those are list prices tied to that review and region; retailer prices, stock and promotions can change.

Do not confuse the MFi model with the Bluetooth G8 Plus

Tom’s Guide’s comparison displayed the GameSir G8 Plus at $99.99 in a deal section. That price is volatile and refers to a different listing context. Tom’s Guide also describes the Bluetooth G8 Plus as lacking passthrough charging and a headphone jack. Check the exact product name and connection method before assuming those features are present on the G8+ MFi.

Controls, comfort and portability: how to choose

Choose compact hardware for travel

Backbone One and Kishi V2 fold or collapse around the phone in a slimmer package than the G8 models. They are easier to carry with a phone, cable and small battery pack. The saving matters if the controller will live in a commuter bag or be used in short sessions.

Choose full-size grips for long sessions

G8 Galileo and G8+ MFi occupy more space but provide a broader handhold, Hall-effect sticks and triggers, and—in the Galileo’s case—two programmable rear buttons. Those features favor players who treat the phone as a primary handheld rather than an occasional second screen.

Decide whether rear buttons or remapping matter

Rear buttons and Hall-effect controls are hardware features of the G8 models. Android touch remapping is a software feature of the Kishi V2 through Razer Nexus. They solve different problems: rear buttons add physical inputs, while remapping can translate a controller press into a touch action where the game permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game and service compatibility

A phone controller works only when the game or service accepts a gamepad, unless an allowed touch-mapping feature supplies the missing input. Installing a controller app does not guarantee that every game will recognize the hardware.

Native mobile games

Check the game’s store listing or in-game settings for controller support. Backbone specifically describes compatibility with supported App Store and Google Play games. A game can support controllers on one operating system and not another, or support only selected menus and gameplay modes.

Cloud and remote play

Backbone lists Xbox, PlayStation, Steam and cloud services among the use cases for compatible apps. The phone controller sends inputs to the app; the remote console or cloud service still determines whether the session accepts a gamepad. Network quality affects streaming responsiveness separately from the controller’s physical connection.

Touch-only games and overlays

The Kishi V2’s Android touch remapping can help with games that do not expose native gamepad controls, but Razer notes that it is subject to game rules. Do not use a mapping method where the game’s terms or anti-cheat system prohibit it. iOS users should not expect the Android remapping feature to transfer to the Lightning or USB-C iPhone edition.

Setup: turn the phone into a handheld without guesswork

  1. Identify the phone port. Check whether the phone has USB-C or Lightning. For an iPhone, the connector generation is the decisive detail.
  2. Select the matching controller edition. Backbone One and Kishi V2 have separate USB-C and Lightning versions. For GameSir, verify whether you need the Android-only G8 Galileo or the G8+ MFi’s USB-C support.
  3. Check official operating-system support. Confirm your phone appears in the current compatibility information. The G8+ MFi documentation includes Android 8.0 or later and iPad mini 6 or later; the Galileo is officially Android-only.
  4. Remove the case for the first fit test. Seat the phone squarely, make sure the connector is fully inserted and confirm that the grips hold the phone without pressure on the display.
  5. Install the relevant companion app only when needed. Razer Nexus is required for the Kishi V2’s Android touch-remapping workflow. Native gamepad play may work directly in a supported game.
  6. Open a known controller-compatible game. Test movement, face buttons, triggers and the system’s in-game controller settings before troubleshooting a particular title.
  7. Reconnect accessories. If you use wired headphones or passthrough power, connect them through the controller’s documented ports and confirm that the phone still recognizes the gamepad.

Troubleshooting the common failures

The phone is not detected

  • Recheck that the controller’s connector matches the phone’s port.
  • Remove the case and reseat the phone so the plug is fully engaged.
  • Try a controller-compatible game rather than a touch-only title.
  • Close and reopen the game after connecting the controller; some games detect gamepads only at launch.
  • Install or update the relevant companion software when the model requires it.

The game opens but ignores the buttons

That usually indicates a game-support issue rather than a broken controller. Check the game’s controller setting, then verify whether the title supports gamepads on your operating system. On Android, the Kishi V2’s touch-remapping option may help only when the game permits it.

  • 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Charging or audio does not work

Confirm that your model actually documents passthrough charging and a headphone jack. Backbone and Kishi V2 document passthrough charging; Backbone and G8 Galileo include 3.5 mm audio. Tom’s Guide lists the Bluetooth G8 Plus without passthrough charging or a headphone jack, which is why identifying the exact model matters.

The phone feels loose or the screen is under pressure

Stop using the setup, remove the case and reseat the phone. A loose fit can mean the case is too thick, the wrong controller edition was purchased or the connector is not aligned. Do not force the bridge or plug against the phone.

Price, availability and buying timing

The only fixed figures in the available product coverage are the GameSir G8+ MFi list prices reported by TechRadar—$79.99, £79.99 and AU$129.99 at its 2026 review—and the $99.99 deal display for a GameSir G8 Plus in Tom’s Guide’s comparison. Neither should be treated as a permanent street price. Retail offers, regional stock, software support and cloud-game catalogs change.

For that reason, compare the exact SKU, connector and included features at checkout rather than choosing solely by a temporary price. A discounted controller that needs a different connector or cannot fit your case is not a cheaper solution.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Backbone One (2nd Generation) when…

You want the simplest recommendation, travel-friendly size, native USB-C or Lightning connection, passthrough charging and 3.5 mm audio. It is the broadest plug-and-play fit for supported mobile games and compatible cloud or remote-play apps.

Buy the Razer Kishi V2 when…

You want a compact wired alternative and use Android touch remapping where the game allows it. Select the USB-C or Lightning edition deliberately and do not treat “low latency” as an independently measured performance number.

Buy the GameSir G8 Galileo when…

You use Android and prioritize full-size comfort, Hall-effect sticks and triggers, rear buttons, passthrough charging and wired audio over portability. Its official Android-only status is a hard boundary.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Buy the GameSir G8+ MFi when…

You have a USB-C iPhone, iPad mini 6 or later, or supported Android phone and want a larger console-style grip with Hall-effect controls and improved case clearance. Confirm the exact MFi model instead of assuming the similarly named Bluetooth G8 Plus has the same ports and features.

The best phone controller is therefore the one that clears three checks in order: the connector matches, the operating system is officially supported and the case fits. After those are confirmed, choose compact Backbone or Kishi hardware for portability, or a G8 model for a larger, longer-session grip.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
