It is not proven to be the game’s highest-damage gun, because no authoritative table publishes pistol damage, range, reload, posture damage, handling, or upgrade scaling. The Blunderbuss is the documented burst choice at point-blank distance, while the Musket is described by secondary guides as the longer-range or burst alternative without developer-verified figures. In practice, the pistol wins on repeatable utility: it fits a combat system built around parries, and the developer account Lyrical Games says that every successful bullet parry gives you a pistol round. Keep it ready for openings, but switch weapons when the boss’s distance and animation make another firearm safer or more damaging.
The short answer: choose the pistol for flexibility, not a damage record
Valor Mortis is a first-person action RPG whose boss encounters are organized around parry timing. GamesRadar characterizes the strongest fights as brutal parry-offs, and TechRadar describes the pistol as one of the weapons and abilities acquired during play. That context matters more than an unverified damage number: a firearm that can be drawn during a brief opening, used against a weak point, and then put away before the next parry window is often more useful than a slower weapon with a larger single hit.

The pistol is therefore the best all-purpose answer for most boss phases, but not an automatic winner in every category. PowerPyx documents pistol shots being used to remove one-hit soldiers during boss sequences, giving it a clear job when a fight contains fragile ranged threats or other disposable adds. The same source reports that a close-range Blunderbuss shot can do “quite a bit of damage,” making that weapon preferable when a boss is safely within point-blank range. Secondary weapon guides describe the Musket as a longer-range or burst firearm, although those descriptions are not backed by an official numerical table.
Read “best pistol” as “best firearm role for a parry-first boss build,” not as proof that the pistol has the highest theoretical damage. The available evidence supports tactical roles and ammunition interactions, not a ranked spreadsheet of exact stats.

Firearm comparison at a glance
| Weapon | Damage role supported by available evidence | Practical distance | Handling in a parry-led fight | Ammo and repeatability | Best use against bosses |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pistol | General-purpose shots for weak points, quick enemy kills, and stagger attempts; highest damage is not established. | Flexible ranged option; exact falloff and maximum range are not published. | Fast access to a firearm during short openings, provided you return to parry timing promptly. | Bullet parries can return pistol rounds according to Lyrical Games. | Default sidearm, add removal, ranged checks, and opportunistic weak-point shots. |
| Blunderbuss | PowerPyx reports “quite a bit of damage” at close range. | Point-blank or very short range. | Requires a safe commitment while the boss is close and exposed. | No authoritative capacity or replenishment figures are established. | One close-range blast during a clearly safe opening. |
| Musket | Secondary guides present it as a longer-range or burst alternative; exact superiority is unverified. | Positioned by those guides as the long-range option, without official distance values. | Useful when distance is stable, but its timing and recovery should be tested against the boss’s next attack. | No authoritative ammunition or reload figures are established. | Longer sight lines or a planned burst when the boss cannot immediately punish the shot. |
Every cell that lacks a number is intentionally qualified. The available material does not establish a developer-approved value for pistol damage, range, reload time, posture damage, handling, or upgrade scaling. Treat any exact figure from an unattributed wiki or build post as unverified rather than as a definitive comparison.
Why the pistol fits Valor Mortis’s boss design
A parry-focused game changes what “good handling” means. Handling is not merely a hidden speed statistic; it is the amount of time and risk required to fire, recognize the result, and resume the defensive rhythm. GamesRadar and TechRadar both place the game’s combat in a context where timing and weapon transitions matter. A pistol that can be drawn for a single deliberate shot and then stowed before the next attack can preserve more control than a weapon that demands a longer commitment.
The pistol also covers several jobs without requiring a separate plan for every phase. A weak point that is difficult to reach with a melee swing can be checked from range. A one-hit soldier can be removed without abandoning the boss arena’s central parry loop. If a boss briefly exposes itself after a successful defense, a pistol shot can test whether the opening supports a stagger or weak-point hit. None of those uses proves superior raw damage; they explain why the weapon remains valuable when a fight is too dangerous or too busy for a point-blank blast.
Damage: what is established and what is not
Pistol damage is useful, but not numerically ranked
PowerPyx’s documented use of pistol shots against one-hit soldiers establishes reliable utility against fragile targets. PowerPyx’s documented account does not provide a damage value, a multiplier, a critical-hit figure, or a confirmed posture-damage amount for the pistol. You should therefore judge a shot by its tactical result—removing an add, touching a weak point, or creating a stagger opportunity—rather than by a claimed damage-per-second ranking.

Do not describe the pistol as the highest-damage gun unless an official in-game data source is published. No authoritative upgrade table publishes its damage or scaling, so a precise “best build” number would be speculation.
Blunderbuss damage is conditional on distance
The strongest supported damage claim belongs to the Blunderbuss in a narrow situation: PowerPyx says a close-range shot can do “quite a bit of damage.” That is a burst recommendation, not evidence that the weapon dominates an entire boss fight. The shot is valuable only when the boss is close, exposed, and unlikely to punish the firing commitment. If the boss is outside point-blank distance or about to begin an attack that requires your full attention, the pistol’s flexible role is safer.
Musket damage remains provisional
Secondary weapon guides position the Musket as a longer-range or burst firearm. They do not supply a developer-verified stat table, so you cannot responsibly convert that description into an exact damage advantage over the pistol. Use the Musket when its distance profile matches the arena and your timing is already reliable, not because an unsupported chart labels it the universal damage winner.

Range: select the weapon by the opening you can actually reach
No authoritative source in the available evidence publishes the pistol’s maximum range, damage falloff, projectile speed, or weak-point accuracy. That means a range comparison should be behavioral. Keep the pistol available when the boss repeatedly moves between distances or when a short opening appears at an uncertain range. Its role is to give you an option without forcing you to stand beside the boss.

The Blunderbuss has the clearest distance constraint: its documented burst value is close range. A point-blank blast should be treated as a planned punish, not a default attack. Wait until the boss is committed to an animation, has just been parried, or is otherwise exposed enough that moving into its space will not cancel your next defensive action.
The Musket is described by secondary guides as the longer-range alternative. Because the guides do not establish exact distance or falloff values, test the weapon against the specific arena geometry rather than assuming every sight line is equally effective. A long corridor, an elevated platform, or a boss phase with predictable spacing may favor it; a cramped arena or rapid gap-closing attack may not.
Handling is an execution problem, not a published stat
Reviews emphasize parry timing and weapon switching as the central execution challenge. In that environment, evaluate a firearm through four questions:
- Can you draw it during the boss’s recovery without missing the next parry?
- Can you recognize immediately whether the shot connected with a weak point, an add, or nothing important?
- Can you cancel the firearm plan and return to defense when the boss resumes its attack string?
- Does the firing distance leave you in a position where the next parry is readable?
The pistol generally answers those questions well because its value comes from short, purposeful interventions. That is a practical handling advantage, not a confirmed numerical rating. The Blunderbuss asks for a larger commitment because its reason to exist in this comparison is a close-range burst. The Musket may create safer spacing, but a longer sight line does not remove the need to read the boss’s next animation.

Bullet parries turn defense into pistol ammunition management
Lyrical Games states: “You can parry bullets, and every bullet parry gives you a pistol round.” This is the most important ammunition interaction for a pistol user. When a boss sequence includes gun-using enemies, a successful bullet parry is both a defensive success and a way to restore a pistol round. The mechanic rewards learning the projectile timing instead of treating every enemy bullet as unavoidable chip damage.
Use the interaction as a loop: identify the firearm enemy, maintain the parry-ready posture, parry the incoming bullet, confirm that the round has been returned, and spend that round only when a meaningful target or opening appears. The evidence does not state the pistol’s magazine size, reload duration, or whether every encounter supplies enough bullets to maintain a fixed firing cadence, so do not promise infinite ammunition. The sustainable part is conditional on having bullets to parry and executing the timing correctly.
A repeatable boss-fight procedure
- Start with the pistol equipped or immediately accessible. The default job is ranged utility: weak points, disposable soldiers, and a low-risk attempt to create a stagger opportunity.
- Read the arena before firing. Identify where a firearm enemy stands, how far the boss can close distance, and which recovery animations leave enough time for a shot and a return to defense.
- Prioritize one-hit soldiers when they can disrupt your parry rhythm. PowerPyx specifically documents pistol shots being used for this purpose during boss sequences. Removing the add can be more valuable than placing an unconfirmed amount of extra damage into the boss.
- Parry bullets rather than spending every round immediately. The developer’s account says each successful bullet parry gives a pistol round. Practice the timing until the defensive action is dependable.
- Fire at a weak point or stagger window. Treat the shot as a deliberate response to an opening, not as automatic background damage while the boss is active.
- Consider the Blunderbuss only when point-blank contact is safe. If the boss is committed, nearby, and exposed, the documented close-range burst can justify the switch. If those conditions are absent, keep the flexible pistol plan.
- Use the Musket only when distance is stable and its timing is familiar. Secondary guides describe a longer-range or burst role, but no official numbers establish a universal advantage.
- Return to parry readiness after every shot. The firearm action is complete when you are prepared for the next attack, not when the projectile leaves the barrel.
Weapon choices by boss situation
The boss is far away or repeatedly disengages
Keep the pistol as the safer default when the distance changes often. It can check weak points and remove ranged adds without requiring you to cross the arena for every attack. If the boss stays at a predictable long distance and the Musket’s handling is already comfortable, use that weapon for the planned long-range role described by secondary guides. The evidence does not justify claiming that the Musket always deals more damage at that distance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe boss is close after a committed attack
This is the Blunderbuss situation. Wait for a recovery, parry, or other clearly readable exposure, then take the close-range shot only if you can survive the return attack. Its documented burst value is conditional; firing it while the boss is still active wastes the very positioning that makes the weapon attractive.

The arena contains firearm users
Keep the pistol available and make bullet-parry practice part of the plan. A successful bullet parry both protects you and returns a pistol round according to Lyrical Games. Remove a one-hit soldier when it threatens to split your attention, then resume the boss’s parry pattern.
You need a quick stagger attempt
Use the pistol for a controlled ranged check when a weak point or recovery is visible. The documented pistol-shot examples support stagger opportunities as part of the pistol’s general-purpose role, but they do not publish a posture-damage value or guarantee that every shot causes a stagger. If the opening is point-blank and the boss is safely exposed, the Blunderbuss may be the stronger burst choice.
Upgrading without saving for a boss weapon
PC Gamer states: “Valor Mortis also doesn’t have boss weapons, so you can spend that clot without missing out.” In practical terms, there is no documented boss-drop pistol or special boss firearm that requires you to hoard upgrade currency. Spend clot according to the role you actually use: improve the weapon that fits your regular openings, ammunition habits, and defensive timing rather than delaying every purchase for a weapon that the game does not provide.
This does not establish a specific upgrade path or prove that one firearm scales best. No authoritative table in the available evidence lists pistol scaling, reload improvements, range changes, or posture effects. Make upgrades based on observed results in your own build, and avoid guides that present unattributed numbers as official values.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Chasing a nonexistent numerical winner. Fix: compare roles and outcomes because official pistol damage, range, and handling figures are not established.
- Using the Blunderbuss at every distance. Fix: reserve it for a safe, close-range opening where its documented burst can connect.
- Ignoring bullet-parry ammunition. Fix: practice projectile timing against firearm enemies; each successful bullet parry is reported to return a pistol round.
- Firing while the boss is still active. Fix: shoot during a readable recovery, weak-point exposure, or add-removal window, then resume defense.
- Treating the Musket’s guide descriptions as official stats. Fix: regard its longer-range or burst reputation as provisional and test whether its timing fits the arena.
- Hoarding clot for a boss weapon. Fix: PC Gamer reports that boss weapons do not exist, so invest in the role you are using now.
What the evidence can and cannot prove
The supported conclusion is tactical. Boss combat is parry-led; the pistol supplies ranged utility; bullet parries can replenish pistol ammunition; the Blunderbuss has documented close-range burst value; the Musket is described as a longer-range or burst alternative by secondary guides; and no boss weapon requires a special reserve of upgrade currency.
The evidence does not prove a numeric ranking for damage, range, reload, posture damage, handling, magazine size, or upgrade scaling. It also does not establish that one firearm is optimal for every boss phase. If a future official patch or in-game data screen publishes those values, they could change the comparison. Until then, the pistol is the most defensible default because it solves more boss problems with fewer distance assumptions, while the Blunderbuss and Musket remain situational specialists.
