They offer very different kinds of action, from tense survival and open-world swordplay to fast first-person combat and action-RPG battles. This is a curated shortlist, not a definitive ranking of every PS4 release that year.
Four notable PS4 action games from 2020
| Game | Action style | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|
| The Last of Us Part II | Story-led survival action | Players who want an intense, character-driven campaign |
| Ghost of Tsushima | Open-world samurai action | Players drawn to exploration, sword combat and a choice of solo or multiplayer play |
| DOOM Eternal | Fast first-person action | Players who want combat-focused shooting at a high pace |
| Final Fantasy VII Remake | Action RPG | Players looking for character-focused storytelling alongside action combat |
The Last of Us Part II
Choose this for a survival-action campaign where the story and its emotional intensity are central. It is the clearest award-backed pick in this shortlist: PlayStation Blog named it the PS4 Game of the Year in its 2020 reader-voted awards, and reported that it won nine awards in that program. Those results reflect reader votes, not a universal quality score. See PlayStation Blog’s 2020 award results.
Ghost of Tsushima
For an open-world alternative, Ghost of Tsushima centers on samurai combat and exploration. PlayStation’s 2020 awards coverage discusses the game and its Legends multiplayer mode, while the year-end roundup includes it among notable releases. The PS4 release dates for Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II were confirmed in a PlayStation Blog announcement on April 27, 2020. Read the release-date announcement.
DOOM Eternal
Pick DOOM Eternal if you want a first-person shooter built around fast, forceful combat rather than an open-world samurai adventure or a story-led survival experience. PlayStation included it in its 2020 year-end roundup.

Final Fantasy VII Remake
Final Fantasy VII Remake brings an action-RPG approach to the list, pairing combat with a character-driven story. It also appeared among the other finishers in PlayStation Blog’s PS4 Game of the Year category. That makes it a useful contrast to the more directly combat-focused appeal of DOOM Eternal.
How to choose between them
- For survival tension and a story-led campaign: The Last of Us Part II.
- For open-world exploration and samurai combat: Ghost of Tsushima; PlayStation’s coverage also points to its Legends multiplayer mode.
- For fast first-person shooting: DOOM Eternal.
- For action-RPG combat and character-focused storytelling: Final Fantasy VII Remake.
These games are better compared by perspective, pace, tone, structure and solo or multiplayer options than by a single score. The award results offer one useful point of reference, but they are not a universal ranking. PlayStation’s year-end coverage is a selection of notable releases, not a complete official list of every action game released for PS4 in 2020.
