For a lower-cost home console, start by comparing Xbox Series S with the PlayStation you had in mind. It is digital-only, so factor in game and storage costs as well as any subscription you want. If you mainly want handheld play, Nintendo Switch Lite or Steam Deck OLED may fit better; if you already own a supported device, Xbox Cloud Gaming could avoid a console purchase. None is automatically the cheapest choice for every player or market.
Compare the options by how you play
| Option | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | A home console for Xbox releases and the Xbox ecosystem | Digital-only; account for storage, digital game costs and any recurring subscription. Check local pricing. |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | Handheld play and Nintendo’s game library | Handheld only, with no TV or hybrid mode. |
| Steam Deck OLED | Portable PC gaming and access to a PC game library | Price may undermine its value as a budget choice, and not every Steam game is compatible. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Trying supported games on a compatible device you already own | Most games require an eligible subscription; availability, device support, internet quality and latency matter. |
The best fit depends on more than the device price. Before choosing, list the games you want to play and check which ecosystem has them. Then weigh purchase cost over the years you expect to use the system, game and subscription spending, TV versus handheld play, digital versus physical ownership, storage, and—if considering cloud gaming—your connection quality.
Xbox Series S: the closest lower-cost home-console alternative
Xbox Series S is the most direct option here if you want a home console rather than a handheld or streaming service. Microsoft’s June 25, 2026 price announcement described it as “the lowest-cost way” for console players to enjoy that year’s major hits. That is Microsoft’s positioning, not proof that Series S has the lowest live price in every country or retailer. Check current local prices before deciding. Microsoft’s announcement names titles including Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Gears of War: E-Day, Grand Theft Auto VI, Halo: Campaign Evolved and Madden NFL 27.
Account for digital-only games and storage
Microsoft lists Series S with 512GB or 1TB SSD options. It is digital-only, so it is not a substitute for a disc-equipped PlayStation if you rely on used discs, lending games, or building a physical collection. Compare the system’s storage with the games you plan to install, and include any additional storage you expect to need in your budget.

Decide whether a subscription helps your budget
Xbox’s subscription ecosystem may suit players who want access to a changing catalogue, but a subscription is a recurring cost, not a one-time console saving. Check current plan terms and whether the specific games you want are included before treating a subscription as cheaper than buying games. Xbox Cloud Gaming availability and plan requirements are described on Xbox’s cloud gaming page.
Nintendo Switch Lite: choose it for handheld Nintendo games
Switch Lite makes sense when portability and Nintendo’s library matter more than matching a PlayStation’s home-console setup. It is a handheld system without a hybrid TV mode, so do not choose it expecting to dock it and play on a television. Its value comes from the games you want and the convenience of handheld play, not from being a like-for-like PlayStation replacement. The 2026 console guide from Tom’s Guide also distinguishes its handheld-only design.

Steam Deck OLED: portable PC gaming, not an automatic bargain
Valve describes Steam Deck OLED as portable PC gaming with a console-like experience. It may suit someone who wants a handheld PC and already values access to a compatible Steam library. But a Steam library does not guarantee every title will work well on the device, and Tom’s Guide flags the OLED model’s price as a value drawback. Check compatibility for the specific games you care about and current local pricing before deciding it is a budget alternative. See Valve’s Steam Deck OLED page and the Tom’s Guide comparison.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: avoid buying a console if your devices and connection qualify
Cloud gaming can reduce upfront hardware spending if you already own a supported phone, computer, television or other device. It does not remove the need to check access conditions: a game, plan, region and device must all be supported, and most games require an eligible recurring subscription. A controller may also be needed, depending on the game and device. Confirm current availability and terms on Xbox’s service page.

Check your network, not just your download speed
Microsoft lists 10 Mbps as a minimum for mobile and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Those figures do not guarantee a smooth session: latency, stability and competing network use also affect play. Cloud gaming trades investment in local high-performance hardware for reliance on a dependable connection.
The U.S. International Trade Commission’s 2022 report discussed 20–30 milliseconds of latency in the context of cloud gaming requirements and market conditions in 2021. That is historical context, not a current universal requirement set by every provider. Read the USITC report for its dated discussion.

How to choose without overspending
- Start with your must-play games. Check each title’s availability on the platform and whether it is included in any subscription you are considering.
- Set a time horizon. Compare the device’s current local price with the games, subscriptions and storage you expect to buy over the years you will use it.
- Match the form factor to your setup. Choose a home console for TV play, Switch Lite for handheld Nintendo gaming, Steam Deck OLED for compatible PC games on the go, or cloud gaming if a supported device and reliable connection are already available.
- Choose an ownership format. If you want discs or used physical games, avoid treating a digital-only console as equivalent. If digital purchases work for you, check the relevant storefront and storage needs.
- Check current prices and service terms. Hardware prices, stock, cloud catalogues, regional support and subscription terms can change; compare local sellers and official service details before purchase.
There is no single winner across all of these tradeoffs. Series S is the first comparison for a lower-cost home console; Switch Lite and Steam Deck OLED are defined by portability and different libraries, while cloud gaming is most compelling when it works with hardware you already own.
