Best for local co-op: Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Sackboy: A Big Adventure is the strongest choice in this list when everyone wants to play together locally. PlayStation lists one to four players and says online play is optional, so an internet connection or PlayStation Plus subscription is not required for offline play. Online sessions support up to four players, with PlayStation Plus required for online play. The game launched on November 12, 2020, and is listed for PS5, PS4, and PC. Best for an online squad: Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 is a cooperative team shooter for players who want to join friends online. PlayStation says you can squad up with up to three friends, for a maximum of four online players. Unlike Sackboy, online play is required, and PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer. It is listed for PS5, PC, and Xbox, so it is not exclusive to PlayStation consoles. Returnal supports online co-op for up to two players. Each player needs the game installed on PS5, along with internet access and PlayStation Plus for co-op mode. The co-op experience does not cover every activity: the Tower of Sisyphus, House sequences, and Challenge Mode are unavailable in co-op. Co-op within a separate mode: Ghost of Tsushima Legends
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut includes Legends, an online co-op mode distinct from the main single-player campaign. PlayStation also lists Ghost of Tsushima: Legends as a separate store item for PS4 and PS5. Best for competitive online racing: Gran Turismo 7
Gran Turismo 7 is the pick for racing against other players, not for co-op missions. PlayStation lists support for up to 20 online players and identifies the game as a PlayStation Exclusive; it is available in PS4 and PS5 versions. Its modes also include campaign, arcade, and driving school. PlayStation support confirms that the PS4 version can be played on a PS5 console.
