Valve’s Regional Standings (VRS) influence which Counter-Strike 2 teams receive direct tournament invites, and prize winnings are one input to those standings. But VRS does not set a universal prize-money table. For a ranked event, Valve’s rules constrain how payouts relate to finishing places; the organizer’s event rules state the actual amounts and recipients.
What VRS does—and what it does not do
Valve describes VRS as its official roster-performance ranking system. It is published monthly and serves as the basis for Direct VRS Invites. A roster means a collection of five specific athletes. VRS is therefore relevant to tournament access and ranking, not a formula that converts a team’s rank into a fixed prize payout. Valve’s Major Supplemental Rulebook and Tournament Operating Requirements describe the applicable mechanics; the governing rule version for an event is tied to its Additional Information deadline.
How VRS affects invitations to ranked tournaments
For a ranked event, the organizer chooses which VRS list or lists to use, how many rosters to invite, and the rank at which invitations begin. The organizer must use the latest VRS available on the invitation date and offer invites sequentially down the selected list. If a roster declines or cannot accept, the organizer continues to the next eligible roster.
At least three athletes from an invited roster must remain on the participating roster and play each event match, in addition to meeting the event’s invite criteria. The event’s rules can also explain any other permitted qualification routes or formats.

Majors illustrate invitations and seeding, not payout allocation
Valve’s supplemental Major rulebook describes 32 teams invited from VRS across three stages: 16 to Stage 1, eight to Stage 2, and eight to Stage 3. Its regional allocation table is specifically labeled Winter 2025, so it should not be treated as a permanent or current allocation. After invitations are accepted, global VRS is used for pre-event stage seeding. Those rules determine access and seeding, not how prize money is divided.
How prize winnings affect VRS
The relationship also runs in the other direction: earnings can contribute to later rankings. Valve’s Regional Standings repository lists a team’s prize money, the prize money earned by opponents it beat, the number of teams beaten, and head-to-head results among the model factors. A tournament result can therefore affect a roster’s future VRS position and potentially its later invitation opportunities. It does not dictate what that tournament must pay its finishers.

What Valve requires for ranked-event payouts
Valve’s ranked-tournament compensation rule governs the ordering and equality of placement payouts:
- A lower final standing cannot receive more compensation than a higher standing.
- Teams with equivalent standings must receive equivalent compensation.
In practice, an organizer may choose the payout amounts and curve within those constraints. Valve’s examples include a qualifier prize that cannot exceed a main-event prize, and equal prizes for identical placements in parallel qualifiers. The rule does not prescribe one dollar split or percentage schedule for all CS2 events.
Organizers are expected to publish key event information, including the prize pool and distribution rules. To find a specific ranked event’s amounts, eligibility conditions, and recipients, consult its current Additional Information and rulebook rather than assuming that another event’s schedule applies.

How unranked-event compensation differs
For unranked tournaments, the operator has discretion to select or invite rosters through another qualifying process. The surfaced Tournament Operating Requirements cap total compensation—including prize pool and other forms of compensation—at $100,000 per unranked event and $250,000 across one operator’s unranked tournaments in a year. These figures belong to the cited requirements text; the rule version applicable to a newly announced event should be checked against that event’s Additional Information deadline.
Valve also maintains event-specific exceptions. For example, its exception list allows FISSURE Playground 1 and 2 to divide the announced prize pool between the prize pool and a performance-based team award. That approval applies to those named events, not to tournaments generally. See Valve’s event-specific exceptions.

Stake Ranked’s 2026 event description pairs VRS-based invitations and seeding with a stated minimum $100,000 prize pool for each event. Its published distribution is:

Where to find the payout that applies to a particular event
- Open the tournament’s official event page and locate its Additional Information and rules.
- Check the rule version associated with the event’s Additional Information deadline.
- Read the payout table for amounts by placement, then check the rules for eligibility, recipients, team awards, or other compensation.
- Look for an event-specific Valve exception if the published structure appears to depart from the standard requirements.
Without those event terms, VRS rank alone cannot tell you how much a team—or an individual player—will receive. The official rules establish no universal split between organizations and players.
