If you want to stream games from your own PS5 without buying a PlayStation Portal, the simplest alternative is a compatible phone paired with a controller such as Backbone One and Sony’s PS Remote Play app. For a dedicated handheld that also works with other streaming services, consider Logitech G Cloud. Choose Steam Deck if portable PC gaming is a priority too—but Valve’s official materials confirm Steam streaming, not an official Sony PS Remote Play client.
First, decide what you mean by “stream PS5 games”
There are two different ways to play streamed games, and they lead to different device choices:

- PS Remote Play: Your PS4 or PS5 runs the game and streams it to another device. Sony says a PS4 or PS5 console is required to stream to other devices. See Sony’s PS Remote Play requirements.
- Cloud streaming: A service streams an eligible game from its own servers rather than from your console. Sony’s PlayStation Portal cloud-streaming path is separate from Remote Play and is limited by game and service eligibility. See Sony’s US cloud-streaming details.
Logitech G Cloud also supports services such as GeForce NOW and Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming, but those offer their respective libraries—not a way to access your PS5 library. Steam Remote Play, meanwhile, streams Steam games from a gaming PC.

Phone plus Backbone One: the reuse option
For someone who already has a compatible phone, this is the most direct way to avoid buying a dedicated streaming handheld. Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app, connect to your PS4 or PS5, and use a Backbone One for physical controls. Sony’s compatibility and console requirements are listed on its PS Remote Play page.

Check the controller edition before buying: Backbone says Android PS Remote Play requires the PlayStation Edition, while compatible iOS devices can use any Backbone One Edition. Backbone also notes that Xbox Cloud Gaming can work without an Xbox console when the user has the required Game Pass subscription; that applies to Xbox’s cloud library, not to PS5 Remote Play. Logitech G Cloud: a dedicated device for multiple services
Logitech positions G Cloud for remote play from PS5, PC, and Xbox, cloud gaming through GeForce NOW and Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming, and local Android games from Google Play. That makes it the clearest fit here if you want a handheld screen and expect to switch among several ecosystems. See Logitech’s G Cloud product page.

For Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox says a Game Pass subscription is sold separately. Neither that subscription nor GeForce NOW should be treated as access to your PS5 library; they provide options beyond PlayStation, subject to each service’s terms and availability. See Xbox’s G Cloud page.

Steam documents Remote Play as a way to stream games from a gaming PC to another device. Its Steam Link support includes Linux, among other platforms, and the streaming model sends video and audio from the host PC while returning remote input. See Valve’s Steam Remote Play page.

This supports choosing a Steam Deck for portable PC gaming and PC-to-device streaming. It does not establish official Sony PS Remote Play support on Steam Deck, so do not buy one on the assumption that Sony provides a supported client for it.
Keep the network and host device in the equation
With Remote Play, the console or gaming PC runs the game while the handheld or phone receives video and audio and sends controls back. A streaming setup therefore depends on both ends: the client needs a suitable connection, and the host must be available to run the game. The cited product pages describe these streaming paths but do not provide a comparable latency or performance test across the devices, so they cannot establish which will feel fastest or look best in a particular home.
When the Portal is still the better fit
If you want Sony’s dedicated device rather than an alternative, the PlayStation Portal is also a baseline worth distinguishing: Sony now describes both Remote Play and cloud streaming for eligible games. The cloud catalog and service terms limit which games can be streamed that way; see the cloud-streaming support page and Portal product page. Sony’s March 17, 2026 update added a 1080p High Quality mode and user-interface refinements; that dated feature announcement is not a comparative image-quality or latency test.
