For a steadier session, prioritize the network: connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet if possible, and use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal.
Which PlayStation Portal resolution setting should you use?
The Max Resolution setting chooses the highest quality Remote Play may use; it does not lock the stream at that quality. PlayStation says the Portal adjusts video quality automatically to suit the internet connection. The two documented options are:

| Mode | What it means | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p High Quality | Uses a higher bitrate than 1080p Standard. The stream can still adjust to connection conditions. | Choose it when your connection is stable and you want the sharpest available image. |
| 1080p Standard | Lower bitrate than High Quality; the stream remains subject to automatic quality adjustment. | Consider it if you prefer a lower maximum bitrate, but troubleshoot network instability first. |
PlayStation’s announcement describes High Quality as a higher-bitrate mode, not a frame-rate setting. Official guidance does not identify a Portal toggle that independently raises FPS, so a sharper picture or smoother-feeling session should not be treated as a guaranteed frame-rate increase.
How to set 1080p High Quality
- Update the Portal: open Settings > System > System Software and check for an update. PlayStation’s system software page lists current update information; rollout timing can vary, so use the version offered on your device. PlayStation Portal system software updates.
- Start Remote Play on the Portal and open the Quick Menu.
- Select Max Resolution, then choose 1080p High Quality.
- End and restart the Remote Play session. PlayStation says the mode change takes effect after restarting Remote Play.
PlayStation’s announcement of the 1080p High Quality mode explains that the setting raises the bitrate ceiling. It does not add bandwidth to your home network; if the connection cannot sustain the stream, automatic adjustment may still reduce quality.

Recommended network setup for PlayStation Portal
Remote Play quality depends on the whole network route between the PS5, Portal, router and internet connection. PlayStation’s accessories and Remote Play quick-menu guidance and its PS Portal Remote Play support page recommend this setup:
- Wire the PS5 to the router with Ethernet whenever possible. This removes the PS5’s Wi-Fi link as a potential source of variation.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal. It is PlayStation’s recommended band for the Portal.
- If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check band steering if the router moves the Portal between bands and the session becomes unstable. PlayStation suggests disabling band steering if it is causing the problem, where the router allows it.
PlayStation recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. That is guidance, not a guarantee of a particular resolution, frame rate or latency: signal quality, congestion and the route between devices still matter. PlayStation also warns that public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control.

What to check when Remote Play is unstable
If you see interruptions, blurry patches or swings in image quality, changing Max Resolution alone is unlikely to fix the cause. Work through the network path in this order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the Portal is using 5 GHz Wi-Fi and is not being moved between bands by band steering.
- If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, check that it and the Portal are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- If possible, connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet, then retry the session.
- Restart Remote Play after changing Max Resolution or network settings so the session uses the updated configuration.
- If you are on public Wi-Fi, try a more reliable private network when available; PlayStation notes that public-network quality may be beyond your control.
Once the connection is steady, use 1080p High Quality for the sharper image. If quality still fluctuates, the resolution ceiling cannot compensate for inconsistent bandwidth or latency.

What PlayStation Portal settings do—and do not—change
The useful setting for image sharpness is the maximum resolution mode. The useful path to a smoother-feeling session is a stable network and the Portal’s automatic adaptation to that connection. Official PlayStation guidance cited here does not document a separate Portal setting for increasing frame rate. Portal Remote Play connects to PS5, not PS4; see PlayStation’s PS Portal compatibility guidance for supported-device details.
