Best Plugins to Reduce Lag on Your Minecraft Server

A measured approach to Minecraft server lag: use Spark to find the bottleneck, Chunky to remove exploration spikes, and targeted entity or Paper activation settings only when the profile justifies them.

The most reliable way to reduce Minecraft server lag is to measure the cause before changing settings. On Paper, start with Spark profiling, then pregenerate terrain with Chunky if exploration is creating spikes. Only add entity-limit plugins when the profile shows entities are the problem; otherwise, tune Paper’s built-in activation ranges in spigot.yml. This order avoids deleting valuable items, masking the real bottleneck, or trading one kind of lag for another.

For a Minecraft Java server, Godlike.Host Minecraft Java hosting includes a Pterodactyl-based game panel with SFTP access, up to three free backups a day with restore, and free DDoS protection.

What “lag” means on a Minecraft server

Players may describe delayed block breaks, rubber-banding, slow mob movement, or late chat as “lag,” but the server can reach those symptoms through different workloads. A new world that is being explored must generate and load chunks. A large animal breeder can create thousands of entity checks. Villagers, redstone-heavy areas, item drops, and entity tracking can all consume tick time. A useful fix therefore depends on identifying which workload is expensive on your particular map and player count.

Paper is the common base for the optimization steps in this guide. Spark and the activation settings discussed here also apply to Spigot forks, but check compatibility with the Paper or fork version you actually run before installing a plugin. Plugin versions and bundled behavior change, so read the release notes for your server version rather than assuming that a setting from an older tutorial still exists.

Start with a profile, not a plugin pile

Profiling comes before configuration changes. Paper’s current profiling guidance puts Spark ahead of tuning, and its command reference identifies /spark as the performance command to rely on. On Paper 1.21 and later, Spark is bundled with Paper, so a separate installation may not be necessary. On another fork, install a Spark build that explicitly supports that fork and Minecraft version.

Run a timed Spark profile

  1. Give yourself operator permission or use the console so the Spark command can run.
  2. Reproduce the problem while the profile is active. If players report lag during exploration, have someone explore; if a farm is suspected, load that area instead of testing an empty spawn.
  3. Run /spark profiler start --timeout 600. The timer is 600 seconds, and Spark returns a report URL when it finishes.
  4. Save the report URL and note what was happening during the capture: player count, world, coordinates, active farms, and whether anyone was generating new terrain.
  5. Use the report to identify the expensive category before changing a setting. A chunk-generation issue calls for a different remedy from an entity-ticking issue.

A profile taken while the server is idle can miss the workload that players experience. Conversely, a profile captured during a one-off command may exaggerate a temporary spike. Repeat the capture during the normal failure pattern and compare the findings before making a broad change.

Why older Timings advice can mislead

Paper’s profiling guide says Timings has been unmaintained for multiple years. Tutorials that tell you to make Timings the primary diagnostic can therefore send you toward an obsolete workflow. Spark is the current starting point on Paper; do not install several profilers and assume that more reports mean a clearer answer.

Choose the fix that matches the profile

Profile symptom First choice What it changes Main caution
Spikes when players explore or a new map is opened Chunky pregeneration Generates chunks before players need them Generation consumes resources while it runs; do it before opening the server to players
Ground items or a very large mob farm dominate the profile Targeted entity limits Removes items or caps entities in defined areas Automatic clearing can delete valuable drops
Many inactive mobs or monsters are ticking across loaded areas Paper activation ranges in spigot.yml Reduces how far categories remain fully active Villager behavior has a specific trade and restocking caveat
Large building operations cause temporary stalls FastAsyncWorldEdit, where compatible Performs edits asynchronously according to secondary guidance It is a build-operation tool, not a general server-lag cure
Entity tracking itself appears inefficient Investigate EntityTrackerFixer cautiously Targets entity-tracking overhead It is a targeted optimization, not a replacement for limits

The table is a decision order, not a promise that every server will benefit from every entry. There is no independently published benchmark in the available evidence establishing a universal percentage improvement. Treat percentage claims from hosting blogs as unverified rather than as expected results.

Use Chunky when terrain generation causes spikes

Exploring an ungenerated area forces the server to create chunks while players are waiting for them. Chunky’s pregeneration guidance recommends generating the intended area before players join. A starting example is chunky radius 5000, which defines a 5,000-block radius around the selected center for generation.

A safe pregeneration workflow

  1. Back up the world and verify that you have enough disk space for the additional region files.
  2. Choose the center and border that match your actual map plan. A radius that is much larger than the area players will use increases generation time and storage without improving the playable area.
  3. Run the Chunky command for the chosen radius, beginning with chunky radius 5000 when that radius fits your map design.
  4. Run generation while the server is closed to players or during a maintenance window. The purpose is to move the expensive work out of live exploration, not to make the live server perform two heavy jobs at once.
  5. Watch the console and server health while generation proceeds. Stop if storage, memory, or CPU pressure threatens the host, then resume in a smaller region or a quieter window.
  6. After completion, restart normally and profile an exploration session again. The profile should no longer show first-time generation for the pregenerated area.

Worker-thread setting on Paper

Chunky’s FAQ suggests adding -DPaper.WorkerThreadCount=X to the server start script on Paper, where X is the number of worker threads. This is a host-level setting, not a magic value that is safe everywhere. Set it only after checking the CPU available to the server and leave capacity for the main server thread, operating system, and other services. Change one variable at a time so a later profile can show whether the adjustment helped.

Pregeneration does not solve every form of lag. It removes the live cost of creating the chunks you generated; it does not cap mobs, shorten view distance, or make an overloaded farm inexpensive. It also has no effect on areas players explore outside the pregenerated boundary.

Control entities only when entities are the bottleneck

Entities are a common cause of low tick performance, but deleting or capping them blindly creates gameplay problems. Let Spark show that entity work is significant before installing an entity-management plugin or applying strict limits.

ClearLag-style cleanup

ClearLag can remove ground items and limit entities. The useful part is targeted cleanup of a proven item or entity buildup; the dangerous part is an automatic sweep that treats every dropped item as disposable. If you use an item-clearing feature, whitelist valuable drops and configure warnings and intervals so players have a chance to collect items. Test the rule in a copy of the world before enabling it on a live economy or survival server.

An item cleaner is not a substitute for fixing the machine that creates the items. A broken farm, death loop, or plugin repeatedly dropping objects will refill the field after every sweep. Profile again after cleanup and repair the source if it remains active.

MobLimiter and FarmLimiter for concentrated farms

MobLimiter and FarmLimiter enforce strict entity caps within a block radius. They are suited to large livestock or breeding farms where one build is responsible for the load. Define the radius around the farm rather than applying a server-wide cap that unexpectedly changes ordinary gameplay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose a cap that preserves the farm’s intended output instead of reducing it to a token number.
  • Check how the plugin handles existing entities when a limit is reached: removal, prevention of spawning, or another rule has different consequences.
  • Exclude protected or decorative areas if the plugin supports per-region rules.
  • Tell players where the cap applies so an apparently missing animal is not mistaken for a data-loss bug.

Strict caps can reduce lag while also changing breeding rates, villager halls, or mob-based economies. Record the original configuration and test production rates after every change.

Tune Paper’s built-in activation ranges

When Spark shows that loaded entities are consuming tick time, Paper’s spigot.yml activation settings are the first built-in lever to test. They reduce how far certain categories remain fully active instead of installing another plugin.

Category Paper default activation range Meaning of the default
Animals 32 blocks Animals beyond the active range can be throttled
Monsters 32 blocks Monsters farther away can be throttled
Miscellaneous entities 16 blocks Miscellaneous entities use a shorter default range
Raiders 64 blocks Raiders retain a longer active range

These are the defaults listed in Paper’s spigot.yml reference. A category set to a range of 0 or less has throttling disabled for that category, so a value of 0 is not a safer “minimum”; it turns the mechanism off. Make a backup, change one category, restart if your configuration workflow requires it, and profile the same scenario again.

Villager behavior is a deliberate trade-off

Paper documents a caveat for disabling ticking of inactive villagers: villagers do not work as they do in Vanilla, and trades restock only while players remain nearby. That can be an acceptable choice for a technical server with a carefully designed trading hall, but it is a poor surprise for players who expect villagers to refresh unattended. Explain the behavior before enabling it and test restocking, workstations, and transportation in your own version.

Do not treat vertical activation as an available setting

A PaperMC GitHub discussion proposes a separate vertical activation range. The retrieved discussion does not confirm that the proposal was merged. Do not tell administrators to look for a production setting that may not exist in their build; use the documented horizontal/category settings and verify the current Paper reference for any later change.

Secondary tools and where they fit

FastAsyncWorldEdit

Secondary guidance describes FastAsyncWorldEdit as performing edits asynchronously, which can reduce stalls during massive builds. Its role is operational: it helps with large world-editing jobs. It does not replace Spark, pregeneration, entity limits, or activation-range tuning when normal gameplay is lagging. Test compatibility with your permissions, protection, and rollback plugins before allowing large edits on the live world.

EntityTrackerFixer

EntityTrackerFixer is described as targeting inefficient entity tracking. Evidence for it is limited, and it should be considered only after a profile points specifically at tracking overhead. It is not a reason to skip sensible entity limits or to install it on every server.

ViewDistanceTweaks

ViewDistanceTweaks is described as adjusting view and simulation distance according to server health. Because the available evidence is limited, treat it as an optional experiment rather than a baseline recommendation. Changes to view and simulation distance affect what players see and what the server simulates; measure both performance and playability after enabling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Entity culling

No dedicated entity-culling plugin was identified in the available material. The closest established mechanism here is Paper/Spigot’s entity activation configuration. Do not install an unrelated “culling” plugin merely because its name sounds relevant; verify that it supports your server version and addresses server-side ticking rather than only a client’s rendering workload.

A controlled rollout that protects your world

  1. Make a full world and configuration backup. Keep a copy of the previous spigot.yml and every plugin configuration you will edit.
  2. Record the baseline: player count, worlds loaded, view and simulation distances, active farms, and the exact lag symptoms.
  3. Capture a Spark profile with /spark profiler start --timeout 600 during the problem.
  4. Apply one targeted change: pregenerate the affected area, adjust one activation category, or limit one proven entity source.
  5. Recreate the same workload and capture another profile. Compare the two reports rather than relying on how the server feels after a restart.
  6. Ask players to test the affected mechanics: exploration, mob spawning, item pickup, villager restocking, or farm output.
  7. Keep the change only if it reduces the measured workload without an unacceptable gameplay regression. Otherwise, restore the backup and test the next hypothesis.

Changing several plugins and configuration files together destroys the comparison. It can also hide a regression until players discover it days later, when identifying the responsible change is much harder.

Troubleshooting common outcomes

“Spark shows no obvious plugin”

Repeat the profile while the lag is actually occurring and include the world and activity that trigger it. Check whether the spike is chunk generation, entity ticking, or another workload instead of assuming that a missing plugin name means the server is healthy.

“Pregeneration made the server worse”

Pregeneration is itself heavy work. Stop it during peak play, reduce the planned radius, or run it before launch. Confirm that the disk and CPU can sustain the job, then let it finish during a maintenance window rather than competing with active players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Clearing items fixed TPS, but players lost drops”

Disable the automatic sweep, restore from backup if necessary, and add an explicit whitelist for valuable items before re-enabling a narrower rule. Then find the farm, death loop, or plugin that is producing the buildup.

“Activation ranges broke a farm or trading hall”

Restore the previous value, identify the category involved, and test a smaller change. For villagers, specifically test work behavior and trade restocking while players are both nearby and away; the inactive-villager caveat can be the intended result of the setting.

“A suggested setting is missing”

Check the documentation for the exact Paper build and fork. The vertical activation range discussed by Paper is a proposal, not a confirmed merged feature in the available evidence, and plugin commands or configuration keys can change between releases.

Compatibility and maintenance checklist

  • Confirm the plugin supports your Minecraft and Paper version before uploading it.
  • Use the server console and permission system to restrict profiling, cleanup, and world-edit commands.
  • Read configuration defaults after every plugin update; do not assume old keys remain valid.
  • Keep backups before changing entity rules or activation behavior.
  • Document every change, its date, the profile that motivated it, and the gameplay test used to approve it.
  • Re-profile after major map expansion, a new farm, a player-count increase, or a Paper update.

Recommended order for most Paper servers

For a new or recently expanded world, run Spark first, pregenerate the intended play area with Chunky, and profile exploration again. If the profile instead points to entities, start with Paper activation ranges and then use a narrowly scoped limit for a confirmed farm or item buildup. Use cleanup plugins with whitelists, not as an unattended delete button. Reserve secondary tools such as FastAsyncWorldEdit, EntityTrackerFixer, or ViewDistanceTweaks for the specific workload they target, and treat their results as experiments that require measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This approach is slower than copying a list of “performance plugins,” but it gives you a defensible reason for every change and preserves the mechanics your players actually use.
