RetroArch is the best PokeDaisy alternative for most Android players who want flexibility across Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and other systems. It supports USB and Bluetooth controllers, customizable overlays and multiple emulator cores, but takes more setup than a Pokémon-focused player. Choose Pizza Boy when you want a dedicated handheld-style interface with touch controls, save states and custom layouts. My OldBoy! is the focused Game Boy/Game Boy Color option, while My Boy! targets Game Boy Advance. Stay with PokeDaisy if its Pokémon companion features, guides, Pokédex information, dual-screen presentation or ROM-hack workflow are the reason you installed it.
Best PokeDaisy alternatives at a glance
PokeDaisy is unusual because it combines emulation with a Pokémon-oriented companion layer. The alternatives below are conventional Android emulators or a general-purpose frontend, so the right choice depends on whether you value Pokémon-specific tools, a short setup, controller flexibility or support for several console families.

What PokeDaisy does that a normal emulator may not
PokeDaisy’s official README describes it as a Game Boy, Game Boy Color and GBA player for dual-screen Android handhelds, made for Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Yellow and Crystal, as well as popular ROM hacks from every generation. That description matters when choosing an alternative: PokeDaisy is not merely a button-and-screen emulator. Its documentation describes a game library, save-file management, save states, resume and rewind, plus a companion interface with guides, Pokédex information and RetroAchievements.
A conventional emulator can still run the underlying console software, but it does not automatically reproduce that companion experience. If you mainly want to launch a cartridge image, map controls and load a save, a conventional emulator may be simpler or more versatile. If you use the guides, in-app information, dual-screen presentation or Pokémon-oriented library workflow every time you play, changing apps means giving up that layer even when the game itself remains playable.

PokeDaisy also documents pointing it at another emulator’s save folder, including RetroArch’s. That makes side-by-side use practical: you can keep PokeDaisy for its companion features and use another emulator when you need a different core, system or controller setup. Treat the save folder as valuable data and make a dated backup before changing applications.
RetroArch: the best all-round alternative
Why choose it
RetroArch is a free, open-source, cross-platform frontend rather than one single emulator. On Android, you install the frontend and then choose the core that handles the console you want to play. That architecture is its biggest advantage. A Pokémon player can use a Game Boy or Game Boy Color core for Red, Yellow or Crystal, a Game Boy Advance core for FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald, Ruby or Sapphire, and still keep other console systems in the same frontend.
RetroArch is also the strongest option when configuration is part of the appeal. Its Android feature summary includes customizable overlays and compatibility with USB and Bluetooth controller peripherals. It supports shaders and controller profiles, so you can maintain different visual and input setups instead of accepting one fixed layout. Those capabilities are useful on a phone, tablet or Android handheld where screen size, aspect ratio and control hardware change from game to game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the setup involves
- Install RetroArch on the Android device.
- Select and install an appropriate core for the console generation of the Pokémon game you want to play.
- Load the game through RetroArch and configure the on-screen overlay or connected controller.
- Save your controller profile and visual preferences if you plan to use the same arrangement for several games.
- Point RetroArch at the save location you intend to use, or copy a backed-up save into the location recognized by the selected core.
The important distinction is that RetroArch has two layers to configure: the frontend and the core. A player who expects a single-install, single-setting experience may find that extra step inconvenient. The payoff is core choice, system breadth, shaders and reusable controller profiles. Current core names, Android menus and compatibility details can change, so check the app’s current documentation when you install it rather than relying on an old screen guide.
Who should pick RetroArch
- Choose it if Pokémon is one part of a larger retro library.
- Choose it if you need USB or Bluetooth controller support and want to customize the mapping.
- Choose it if shaders, overlays, profiles and core selection matter more than the shortest setup.
- Choose it if you want a practical second emulator while retaining PokeDaisy for its Pokémon companion features.
RetroArch is less compelling when your only goal is to open one GBA game immediately and never adjust another setting. In that case, a dedicated emulator may involve less decision-making.

Pizza Boy: a dedicated Android path
What is established
Pizza Emulators presents Pizza Boy Double Slice as a fast Android dual-screen emulator with full touch support, save states, custom layouts and colors. The same site presents a broader family of native emulators. This makes Pizza Boy the dedicated-emulator alternative to investigate when you want handheld-focused play without the multi-system frontend layer.
Its touch support and custom layouts are especially relevant on a phone. You can use the screen itself rather than buying a controller, then adjust the arrangement to suit the device’s shape. Save states provide a second way to pause progress in addition to the game’s own save system. Custom colors and layouts let you make the display more personal or more legible on a particular screen.
Match the edition to the game
Do not select a Pizza Boy edition by the Pokémon title alone. First identify the console generation:
- Pokémon Red and Yellow: Game Boy software.
- Pokémon Crystal: Game Boy Color software.
- Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire: Game Boy Advance software.
Confirm that the exact Pizza Boy Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance edition you are considering supports that generation. The available material establishes the Pizza Boy family and Double Slice features, but it does not establish a current edition-by-edition compatibility list, price, store availability or support for every modern ROM hack. Those details require a current check at the time you install the app.
Who should pick Pizza Boy
- Choose it when you want a dedicated handheld interface rather than a multi-system library.
- Choose it when full touch support is important and you do not want to carry a controller.
- Choose it when custom layouts, colors and save states are more useful than core selection.
- Check another option if your main requirement is one frontend for several unrelated consoles.
My OldBoy! and My Boy!: focused classic emulators
My OldBoy! for Game Boy and Game Boy Color
The comparison identifies My OldBoy! as the Game Boy/Game Boy Color choice. It is therefore a natural fit for Red, Yellow and Crystal when you want a conventional emulator interface and do not need PokeDaisy’s companion layer. Its narrow system focus can be an advantage: there are fewer console-generation decisions than in a multi-system frontend.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
My Boy! for Game Boy Advance
My Boy! is identified as the Game Boy Advance option. It is the focused choice among these two names for FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire. Players whose library is almost entirely GBA Pokémon can use that specialization as a simple selection rule.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What you should verify before committing
The available information does not establish current pricing, store availability, update cadence or compatibility with every modern ROM hack for either app. Those are volatile details, so verify them in the current listing and documentation before moving a main save library. The same caution applies to controller behavior: a conventional emulator may work well with a particular Android gamepad, but current model-specific support is not established here.
My OldBoy! and My Boy! make sense when you want a focused emulator and already know which console generation you need. They are less suitable if you want one app that spans several systems, uses RetroArch-style core choice or supplies PokeDaisy’s guides and Pokédex-style context.
Choose by Pokémon game and device
| Game | Console generation | Suitable choices from this comparison | Decision point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red or Yellow | Game Boy | PokeDaisy; RetroArch with a Game Boy core; Pizza Boy’s matching edition; My OldBoy! | Pick a GB-focused app unless you also need GBA or other systems in the same frontend |
| Crystal | Game Boy Color | PokeDaisy; RetroArch with a Game Boy Color core; Pizza Boy’s matching edition; My OldBoy! | Confirm the app’s Game Boy Color support rather than assuming Game Boy support covers every edition |
| FireRed or LeafGreen | Game Boy Advance | PokeDaisy; RetroArch with a GBA core; Pizza Boy’s matching edition; My Boy! | A GBA-capable app is required; choose between dedicated controls and multi-system flexibility |
| Emerald, Ruby or Sapphire | Game Boy Advance | PokeDaisy; RetroArch with a GBA core; Pizza Boy’s matching edition; My Boy! | Check the exact edition and save handling before migrating an existing file |
For a ROM hack, treat the title as a compatibility question rather than assuming that support for the original game guarantees support for every modification. PokeDaisy is explicitly aimed at popular ROM hacks from every generation, while the available information does not establish complete modern-ROM-hack coverage for the other choices.
How to move saves safely
Save migration is usually the deciding issue for someone leaving PokeDaisy. PokeDaisy documents using another emulator’s save folder, including RetroArch’s, but the target application still has to recognize the same save format. A game that launches successfully can still appear to have no progress if the save is in the wrong folder, has a different expected name or uses a format the target does not read.

- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
- Close the game and both emulator apps. Do not copy a file while an emulator may still be writing it.
- Create a dated backup. Copy the complete PokeDaisy save folder to a separate location and label it with the date and game name. Keep the original untouched.
- Identify the target emulator’s save location. Use its current documentation or storage settings; do not guess based on another app’s folder structure.
- Copy, rather than move, the save. A copy lets you return to PokeDaisy if the target app does not recognize the file.
- Launch the target emulator and test the save. Confirm the correct trainer, party and progress before changing or deleting anything.
- Make a second backup after a successful test. Keep the known-good original and the newly recognized copy until you have played and saved normally.
Save files and save states are not interchangeable. A normal in-game save is the safer migration candidate because it belongs to the game. A save state is tied more closely to emulator behavior and configuration; keep it as a backup, but do not assume another emulator can load it. If a save is missing, return to the backup, verify the target folder and check the target emulator’s expected format before trying again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Touch controls, USB and Bluetooth controllers
You do not need a physical controller to use any option described here. Pizza Boy Double Slice is documented with full touch support, and PokeDaisy’s development notes document gamepad and keyboard input. RetroArch’s Android feature summary notes compatibility with USB and Bluetooth controller peripherals. A Bluetooth Android game controller or USB-C gamepad is therefore an optional comfort upgrade, not a requirement.
When touch controls are enough
- Touch is convenient for short sessions and for devices where carrying another accessory is undesirable.
- A dedicated emulator with custom layouts can be preferable when you want to move or resize virtual buttons.
- Fast menu navigation and long sessions may be more comfortable with a physical controller, especially on a phone where the overlay covers part of the screen.
When to use a physical controller
- Choose Bluetooth when you want a cable-free setup on a phone or handheld.
- Choose USB when a wired connection and direct compatibility are more important than portability.
- Use RetroArch if you specifically want controller profiles and broad peripheral support across several systems.
- Before buying, verify that the controller exposes standard Android input and that the app recognizes its buttons; current model-by-model support is not established here.
After connecting a controller, test the directional pad, four face buttons, start, select and shoulder buttons in the emulator before beginning a long session. A Pokémon game may be playable with a partial mapping, but an unmapped menu or shoulder button can become a problem later.
Common problems and practical fixes
The game opens, but the save is missing
Check that the file was copied to the target emulator’s actual save folder, that the app is using the expected console edition and that the save format is supported. Restore the dated backup if you are unsure. Do not delete the PokeDaisy copy until the target has loaded and written a test save successfully.
The emulator runs the wrong generation
Red and Yellow are Game Boy titles, Crystal is Game Boy Color, and FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire are Game Boy Advance titles. In RetroArch, select a core for the correct generation. In a dedicated emulator, confirm that you installed the matching edition rather than assuming a similarly named app handles every Game Boy family system.
Best Value

- Compatible with iPhone, iPad, macOS and Apple TV now. (Officially Supported)
- Full-featured retro controller- clickable joysticks, rumble vibration, motion controls, wireless Bluetooth, rechargeable battery, home and screenshot Buttons and a USB-C connector
- Perfect classic d-pad.
Controls work on screen but not with the gamepad
Reconnect the controller, check Android’s input recognition and open the emulator’s controller-mapping settings. In RetroArch, review the active controller profile and the core-level mapping. In PokeDaisy, verify the documented gamepad or keyboard input path. If only some buttons respond, map the missing buttons before troubleshooting the game itself.
A ROM hack behaves differently from an original game
ROM hacks can place demands on an emulator that the original release does not. PokeDaisy is explicitly described as supporting popular ROM hacks from every generation, but complete current coverage for RetroArch cores, Pizza Boy editions, My OldBoy! or My Boy! is not established here. Test a copy of the hack and keep the original save backup separate.
The setup feels too complicated
Move from RetroArch to a dedicated emulator if you do not need multiple systems, shaders or reusable profiles. Pizza Boy is the dedicated path with documented touch, layout and save-state features. My OldBoy! and My Boy! are the focused choices when your library is limited to one classic generation. Retain PokeDaisy if the companion interface is the feature you would miss most.

A decision framework that fits most players
Choose RetroArch when breadth comes first
Pick RetroArch for a multi-console Android library, core selection, shaders, customizable overlays and USB or Bluetooth controller profiles. Accept the additional installation and configuration work as the price of that flexibility.
Choose Pizza Boy when a dedicated interface comes first
Pick the matching Pizza Boy edition when you want full touch support, custom layouts, colors and save states in a handheld-focused app. Confirm the console generation and current edition details before moving a save.
Choose My OldBoy! or My Boy! when your library is narrow
Use My OldBoy! for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, or My Boy! for Game Boy Advance games. They are sensible conventional choices when you do not need a companion layer or a frontend spanning unrelated systems.
Stay with PokeDaisy when its companion layer is the point
Keep PokeDaisy if you rely on its Pokémon-focused library, save management, resume and rewind, guides, Pokédex information, RetroAchievements, dual-screen presentation or supported ROM-hack workflow. You can still use another emulator beside it by pointing PokeDaisy at the other app’s save folder, provided you back up first and verify the format.

Bottom line
There is no single replacement that reproduces every part of PokeDaisy. RetroArch is the strongest general recommendation for Android players who want one flexible frontend and controller-friendly support across systems. Pizza Boy is the most natural dedicated alternative when touch controls and custom handheld layouts matter. My OldBoy! and My Boy! are straightforward generation-specific choices. PokeDaisy remains the better fit for Pokémon-specific guidance and companion features, and its documented save-folder workflow means you can combine it with another emulator instead of making an irreversible switch.
