For a dependable story party, keep the starter you like and use the other five slots to cover different attack types and roles: Ground, Fairy, Electric, and Fire coverage, plus one flexible pick for a defensive need or a difficult fight. Treat that as a practical starting point, not a tested ranking—the right lineup changes with your mission.
What makes a team “best” in Legends: Arceus?
It depends on what you are doing. A party built for a tough trainer battle may not be the most useful one for exploring or completing Pokédex research tasks. Nintendo describes research as part of Pokédex progress and rank advancement, while its gameplay guidance says players can carry six Pokémon and choose the right ones for each mission. That makes swapping Pokémon a normal part of planning, rather than a sign that your main team is wrong.

The official pages establish the party system and starter choices, but do not rank lineups or identify a universal best team. The recommendation below is an editorial framework for broad story coverage, not an official or tested team.
A practical six-slot team framework
Start with your preferred starter, then use the remaining slots to add coverage rather than stacking Pokémon that fill the same role. The Pokémon that provide each type are up to you; choose from what you have caught and can raise at your current point in the story.

This is a coverage-first outline, not a requirement to use exactly one Pokémon of each type. If a Pokémon in your party already supplies useful coverage, avoid duplicating it just to match the list. Use the final slot—and, when needed, other slots—to prepare for the specific mission ahead.
Choose the starter you want to keep
The starter choices are Rowlet, Cyndaquil, and Oshawott; the official Pokémon roster also lists their Hisuian evolutions. There is no source-backed reason to treat one as the universal best choice. Pick the one you most want to use, then let the rest of the team fill coverage gaps.

Plan for action order, not only type matchups
Battle turns in Legends: Arceus do not follow a simple one-action-per-Pokémon pattern. The Pokémon Company International’s official gameplay page explains: “In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon’s stats and other factors determine how many actions each Pokémon gets and in what order.” A Pokémon may act more than once in sequence, so an apparent type advantage does not by itself guarantee a safe turn.
Move styles add another trade-off. Agile Style raises action speed and may bring your next turn sooner, but lowers move power. Strong Style raises move power while lowering action speed. Use the style that fits the immediate situation: Agile when acting again sooner matters, Strong when extra power is worth potentially giving up tempo. Consider the likely action order before spending a turn on a slower, stronger move.

Change the party for the mission
Before setting out, consider both the battle you may face and the work you want to do. If you are pursuing research tasks, bring Pokémon that help with those objectives as well as a lineup you can rely on in combat. For a difficult trainer or boss fight, use the flexible slot to address a clear weakness in your current party. For general exploration, favor a balanced mix of coverage and survivability over a lineup assembled for one matchup.
Nintendo’s official gameplay guidance explicitly supports choosing Pokémon for each mission, and the party limit is six. You do not need to treat one fixed lineup as your team for the entire game.
