For multiplayer through PPSSPP, start with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for co-op, Phantasy Star Portable 2 for co-op or versus, and Gran Turismo or Ridge Racer for racing. PSP Ad Hoc originally means local wireless play between nearby systems; PPSSPP can also route supported Ad Hoc sessions through a LAN or relay server over the Internet. That is different from Infrastructure mode, which uses game servers and may depend on community revival projects.
There is no authoritative, current ranking or compatibility list establishing ten best games for PPSSPP. This is a curated set of the best-supported picks, organized by play style and the available evidence—not a claim that every title was tested. Compatibility and smoothness can vary by game, emulator settings, network, relay location, and server availability.

How to read these picks
PPSSPP’s documentation describes Ad Hoc as local Wi-Fi multiplayer, but the emulator can route supported Ad Hoc play through a relay so people can connect over the Internet. A game may support Ad Hoc, Infrastructure, or both; the modes are not interchangeable. The picks below distinguish the supported mode and how specific the evidence is.

For relay latency, PPSSPP specifically identifies the Monster Hunter series, Ridge Racer, and Call of Duty: Road to Victory as relatively forgiving candidates. Its mention of GTA is tentative, so treat that suggestion accordingly. These are guidance from PPSSPP, not guarantees of a smooth session.

Best-supported PPSSPP multiplayer picks
1. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite — best for cooperative hunts
Freedom Unite is the strongest fit here for a group that wants to cooperate against monsters rather than race or compete. Sony identifies it as an Ad Hoc title, and PPSSPP names the Monster Hunter series among games that can be forgiving of relay latency. Together, those sources support it as a promising Ad Hoc pick, but they do not amount to a current, game-specific PPSSPP compatibility test.
Connection to try: PPSSPP relay or LAN Ad Hoc. Evidence: named-title Ad Hoc support plus series-level relay guidance.
2. Phantasy Star Portable 2 — best for co-op and versus variety
SEGA’s official Japanese site says its Ad Hoc multiplayer supports up to four players for both cooperative and versus play. The game also has an Internet multiplayer mode, but that is a separate mode from Ad Hoc; do not assume the two use the same setup or servers.

Evidence: official game-specific mode and player-count information from SEGA; current PPSSPP compatibility is not established by that feature description.

- Compete against a friend with in-level challenges for rewards and points to be spent to upgrade your character and unlock bonus items.
- Play as your favorite Jedi heroes including Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, Mace Windu, and Kit Fisto.
- Slice and dice your way through Separatist droids with your lightsaber and Force powers and use your agility to perform amazing leaps and navigate levels filled with interactivity.
- Turn your enemies into weapons as you commandeer droids and use their unique abilities to blast enemies and solve puzzles as a Jedi.
- Be part of an elite clone trooper squad with unique gameplay that puts firepower at your fingertips.
3. Gran Turismo (PSP) — best for circuit racing
Sony’s historical PlayStation Blog lists Gran Turismo as a PSP title with Ad Hoc mode. That establishes the game’s intended multiplayer mode, not current service availability or present-day PPSSPP performance.
Connection to try: PPSSPP Ad Hoc over LAN or relay. Evidence: Sony’s historical mode reference; no current game-specific compatibility result is established here.
4. Ridge Racer — best-supported relay racing series
For arcade-style racing, Ridge Racer is a natural alternative to Gran Turismo. PPSSPP specifically includes the series among its latency-forgiving relay candidates. The cited guidance applies at the series level; it does not verify every PSP installment individually.
Connection to try: PPSSPP relay or LAN Ad Hoc. Evidence: series-level relay guidance; no individual installment is certified by that statement.
Rank #3
- Go faster than ever on much longer streets, reaching scary speeds
- Get from checkpoint to checkpoint while you outmaneuver aggressive, alone or in multiplayer mode
- New Garage Mode for adding high-end customization to your racing machine
- Add style to your ride, with wheels customized with parts from Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Ducati and more
5. Call of Duty: Road to Victory — a shooter option for relay groups
PPSSPP names Call of Duty: Road to Victory as a candidate that may be forgiving of relay latency, making it a different-paced option for groups who want a shooter. The source does not identify a particular server or report a current test result.
Connection to try: PPSSPP relay, if the game’s Ad Hoc room and network setup work for the group. Evidence: PPSSPP relay guidance, not a game-specific compatibility certification.
More games to try, with narrower evidence
6. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G — another co-op hunting option
Sony’s 2008 announcement named Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G as compatible with its AdhocParty service. That is historical evidence of Ad Hoc support, not evidence that Sony’s old service is still available or that every current PPSSPP setup works.
Connection to try: PPSSPP Ad Hoc over LAN or relay. Evidence: historical Sony service announcement.
Rank #4
- Playstation portable game
- Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
7. Phantasy Star Portable — action-RPG alternative
Sony’s 2008 AdhocParty announcement also listed Phantasy Star Portable. This makes it a reasonable title to investigate for group play, but the source is historical and does not confirm present-day PPSSPP compatibility.
Connection to try: PPSSPP Ad Hoc over LAN or relay. Evidence: historical Sony listing; current title-specific compatibility is not established.
8. WipEout Pulse — racing if you want to investigate revived online play
WipEout Pulse belongs in a different category from the Ad Hoc recommendations: PPSSPP documents a working Infrastructure revival route for it. That is an online, server-based mode, not evidence of Ad Hoc compatibility. PPSSPP notes a caveat: opponents’ ship textures may appear corrupted.

9. GTA on PSP — a tentative possibility, not a confirmed pick
PPSSPP mentions “maybe a bit of GTA” as a possible latency-forgiving choice. That wording is deliberately uncertain: it does not establish which PSP entry is meant, nor confirm the series’ multiplayer modes or current PPSSPP compatibility. Verify the exact game and its in-game multiplayer options before choosing it for a group session.
Connection to try: only after verifying the exact title’s mode. Evidence: tentative series-level mention from PPSSPP, not a confirmed recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up PPSSPP Ad Hoc play
The simplified relay-server flow is supported in PPSSPP 1.20.1 and newer. Players still use the game’s normal Ad Hoc lobby to host or join; the relay changes how devices connect, not the game’s menu flow.
- Update PPSSPP: use version 1.20.1 or newer for the simplified relay setup.
- Enable networking: open PPSSPP’s networking settings on every participating device and enable networking.
- Choose nicknames and a relay: set an Ad Hoc nickname for each player and select a supported relay-capable server. Everyone must use the same relay server.
- Match port offsets: use the same port-offset setting on all devices. PPSSPP’s settings reference gives 10000 as the usual default.
- Open the game’s Ad Hoc multiplayer menu: have one player create the room and the others join it using the game’s normal in-game flow.
For same-LAN play, one player can enable PPSSPP’s built-in Ad Hoc server. Other players add that host device’s local IP as a custom server and leave relay mode unchecked. This uses the host’s local network rather than a relay.
Quick Recap
Relay, LAN, old P2P, and Infrastructure are different paths
- LAN Ad Hoc: devices connect over the same local network, with one PPSSPP instance hosting the built-in Ad Hoc server.
- PPSSPP relay: a supported relay carries Ad Hoc traffic between players over the Internet. It can reduce setup friction, but a relay far from the players can add latency.
- Older direct P2P: the older connection method can require router port forwarding and may fail behind restrictive routers or carrier-grade NAT.
- Infrastructure: the game connects to online game servers rather than using Ad Hoc. Many original PSP Infrastructure servers have shut down; some community replacements exist. WipEout Pulse is one documented revival example, with the texture caveat noted above.
What to check if a session will not connect
- Confirm every player enabled PPSSPP networking and selected the same relay server, if using relay mode.
- Check that each player has the same port offset; the documented usual default is 10000.
- For LAN play, verify that the other devices entered the host’s correct local IP and have relay mode off.
- Make sure the game supports the multiplayer mode you are trying to use. An Infrastructure revival does not prove Ad Hoc support, and Ad Hoc support does not prove a working Infrastructure server.
- Avoid speed control while connected. PPSSPP warns that changing speed during networking can cause desynchronization or disconnections.
- If relay play connects but feels delayed, the relay’s location relative to each player may be contributing; network conditions and server availability also matter.
