For most PC players, DuckStation is the best PS1 emulator to start with. It is a straightforward standalone application with hardware upscaling, texture filtering, 24-bit color output and support for common SDL, XInput and DInput controllers. Choose Beetle PSX HW in RetroArch if you specifically want Libretro integration, OpenGL or Vulkan rendering, PGXP geometry corrections and configurable shader-style filters. Choose the software-rendered Beetle PSX core when faithful behavior matters more than high-resolution enhancements and your CPU can sustain its heavier workload.
The right choice depends less on a universal speed ranking than on what you value: simple setup, compatibility behavior, graphics enhancements, controller flexibility or accuracy. This guide explains those trade-offs and gives practical settings for sharp images without introducing geometry, timing or input problems.

Quick answer: which PS1 emulator should you use?
- Best general-purpose choice: DuckStation. Its standalone interface is easier to learn, and it combines modern hardware rendering with per-game settings and broad desktop support.
- Best for RetroArch users and visual experimentation: Beetle PSX HW. It adds OpenGL and Vulkan hardware rendering, internal-resolution scaling, PGXP options and filters such as SABR, xBR and JINC2.
- Best accuracy-oriented fallback: Beetle PSX software. It prioritizes faithful behavior and provides a useful reference image, but high internal resolutions and the most precise subpixel mode can be demanding.
All three options expect legally obtained PlayStation firmware and game media. None should be treated as a source of BIOS files or copyrighted game downloads.

What DuckStation does well
- Hardware renderers can draw games above the original console’s internal resolution.
- Texture filtering and 24-bit true-colour output can reduce the blockiness and limited-color appearance associated with an unenhanced signal.
- SDL, XInput and DInput-compatible controllers are supported, covering most USB pads and many Bluetooth adapters that expose one of those input APIs.
- Per-game profiles let you keep a clean global setup while making exceptions for a title with geometry or timing problems.
Files and first launch
DuckStation requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS ROM image. Obtain that firmware by dumping it from hardware you own or through another legally authorized method. The emulator does not make a BIOS legal to download simply because a search result offers one.
- Install the current DuckStation build for your operating system and choose a writable user-data location when prompted.
- Open the BIOS or firmware configuration page and point it to your legally dumped BIOS image.
- Add the folder containing your legally dumped game media to the game list, or open an image file directly for a one-time test.
- Connect your controller before configuring input so the emulator can identify its API and device name.
- Launch one game at native resolution first. This gives you a known-good baseline before adding enhancements.
Recommended DuckStation graphics starting point
- Select a hardware renderer supported by your GPU. Use the renderer that operates reliably on your system rather than assuming one API is universally best.
- Raise internal resolution one step above native and replay the same area of the game. Increase it again only if frame pacing remains stable and geometry looks correct.
- Enable texture filtering only after confirming that the higher internal resolution itself is stable. Filtering changes the look of both 2D artwork and 3D surfaces, so judge it in menus as well as in gameplay.
- Keep widescreen changes disabled globally. Preserve the original 4:3 presentation unless a particular game has a known, correctly implemented widescreen mode.
- Save a per-game profile when a title shows warped polygons, missing effects, incorrect timing or another problem after an enhancement is enabled.
DuckStation’s defaults are intended to keep games playable, not to force every optional enhancement on. Treat resolution scaling, filtering, widescreen and geometry options as experiments you can turn off independently.
When Beetle PSX HW in RetroArch is the better choice
Beetle PSX HW is a Libretro port or fork of Mednafen’s PSX module. It runs through RetroArch on Windows, Linux and macOS and is aimed at people who want a common frontend, save-state system, playlist and input layer across multiple console cores.
Rendering and enhancement options
Hardware rendering requires OpenGL 3.3 or Vulkan. The core supports internal-resolution scaling and adds PGXP features for perspective-correct texturing and subpixel precision. Those options can make polygon edges and textures look steadier in 3D scenes, but they alter the way the original hardware’s limitations appear. A game that looks excellent with PGXP enabled can show distorted geometry or misplaced objects with it enabled, so keep the option reversible.

Libretro documents SABR, xBR and JINC2 as filters that improve texture fidelity or perceived sharpness. They are particularly useful in scenes that mix 2D artwork with 3D objects, but they require more processing than a basic nearest-neighbor or bilinear presentation. Enable one filter at a time, compare a repeatable scene and keep it only if the frame rate and image are stable.
Setting up Beetle PSX HW
- Install RetroArch and place your legally dumped BIOS files in the RetroArch system directory expected by your installation.
- Install or select the Beetle PSX HW core from RetroArch’s core-management interface.
- Load a legally dumped game image, then open the core’s options menu while the game is running.
- Choose OpenGL or Vulkan only when your graphics driver supports the required API. If hardware rendering fails to initialize, return to a software core or a supported renderer rather than stacking more enhancements on a broken setup.
- Set a modest internal resolution, test the game, then adjust PGXP and texture filters separately.
- Create a per-game override for unusual settings so other games retain a stable baseline.
Why use the software Beetle PSX core?
The software-rendered Beetle PSX core is the accuracy-oriented option. It is useful when you need to distinguish an emulator enhancement from the behavior of the original console, or when a hardware renderer introduces a title-specific visual error. Use it at native or modest internal resolution for a reference-like image.
Subpixel precision modes
The core’s documentation describes Memory only subpixel precision as the recommended compatibility choice. Memory + CPU precision can reduce visible jitter further, but it is highly demanding and known to cause geometry errors. Start with Memory only, and move to Memory + CPU only for a specific test where you have a way to compare the result and can revert quickly.

Graphics settings that stay sharp without introducing glitches
PS1 games combine low-resolution 2D assets, affine texture mapping, polygon jitter and game-specific timing tricks. A setting that improves one scene can damage another. Use this order so each change has a clear cause and an easy recovery.
1. Confirm the renderer
For enhancement-focused play, start with a supported hardware renderer: OpenGL, Vulkan or the equivalent hardware option exposed by your standalone emulator. For accuracy testing, use software rendering. Do not compare screenshots until the renderer itself is stable; driver errors and shader compilation stutter can look like game bugs.
2. Increase internal resolution gradually
Internal resolution is the most visible sharpness control. Raise it in small steps and revisit the same camera angle, menu and effects-heavy scene after each change. Watch for texture shimmer, missing semi-transparent effects, geometry breaks and uneven frame pacing. If any appear, return to the last stable step rather than assuming the highest value is best.

Texture filtering can soften harsh pixel transitions, while SABR, xBR and JINC2 are stronger choices for mixed 2D/3D scenes. Strong filters can blur deliberately pixel-art menus or increase GPU load. Keep the filter disabled when the game’s original artwork looks cleaner without it.

4. Treat PGXP and perspective correction as per-game options
PGXP can correct perspective and subpixel behavior in 3D geometry, reducing the wobble associated with original PlayStation polygons. It can also expose title-specific distortions. Enable it for a game, inspect doors, floors, character models and distant textures, and disable it if geometry bends, clips or moves incorrectly.
5. Keep 4:3 unless widescreen is known to work
Stretching a 4:3 frame to fill a modern display changes proportions. A game-specific widescreen mode may be accurate enough for that title, but a global widescreen switch can reveal areas the original camera never designed or render HUD elements incorrectly. Preserve 4:3 as the baseline and use a per-game profile for a verified exception.
6. Maintain a troubleshooting baseline
Save one profile with native resolution, no texture filter, no PGXP and the software renderer. It is your control image. When a visual problem appears, load that profile, then re-enable one feature at a time until you identify the cause.

Controller setup and mapping
Choosing a controller
A modern USB XInput-compatible controller is the simplest general recommendation on Windows because it presents a familiar face-button, shoulder, Start, Select and D-pad layout. SDL and DInput devices are also supported by DuckStation, and RetroArch can use a wide range of pads once the physical device is bound.

Use an original-style digital PlayStation controller profile for games that do not support analog input. Select a DualShock or other analog-capable profile only for titles that actually expect analog sticks. Mapping sticks onto a digital game can make menus or movement feel wrong, while leaving analog games in a digital mode removes their intended controls.
DuckStation controller procedure
- Connect the pad and open DuckStation’s controller settings.
- Choose the detected SDL, XInput or DInput device and assign the PlayStation port’s device type.
- For a digital game, select the standard PlayStation controller type, then map D-pad, four face buttons, L1, R1, L2, R2, Start and Select.
- For an analog game, select the DualShock-compatible type and map both sticks, including stick-click inputs only if the game uses them.
- Test every direction and shoulder button in the input preview. Pay special attention to L2/R2, whose placement differs between modern pads.
- Save the mapping globally, then create a per-game profile if one title uses an unusual layout.
RetroArch and Beetle PSX input procedure
- Bind the physical controller globally under Settings → Input.
- Start the Beetle PSX HW or Beetle PSX core and open its controls menu.
- Verify the port’s device type before changing individual buttons. A wrong device type can make a correct physical binding appear broken.
- Use a standard PlayStation profile for digital games and a DualShock or analog profile only for supported titles.
- Save a core or game override for an unusual layout rather than changing the global profile for every game.
Common input symptoms
- Every button is shifted: the core’s port device type or controller profile is wrong. Select the intended digital or analog device before remapping.
- Only the sticks fail: the game may be digital-only, or the emulated device may still be set to a standard controller.
- Triggers are reversed or missing: remap L2 and R2 manually; modern pads do not always expose them in the same order as a PlayStation controller.
- Input works in menus but not in a game: check whether the game expects a different controller type and verify that the pad is assigned to the correct emulated port.
- Two players control the same character: inspect port assignments and disable duplicate bindings in the second port.
BIOS, game files and legal preservation
A PS1 or PS2 BIOS image is required by DuckStation, and Beetle PSX expects the required firmware files in RetroArch’s system directory. Dump the firmware from hardware you own or use another legally authorized source. The same principle applies to game discs and image files: create your own dumps from media you own or use media for which you have permission.
Keep BIOS files in the emulator’s documented location, use clear filenames, and avoid unverified download sites. If a game does not boot, check the firmware region and file placement before changing graphics settings. A missing or incorrectly named BIOS cannot be repaired by enabling PGXP, filters or a different controller profile.

Choosing by priority
Choose DuckStation if you want the shortest path to playing
Pick DuckStation when you prefer a dedicated application, want hardware upscaling without learning a multi-core frontend, and expect to switch between USB controllers. Begin with conservative enhancements and use per-game profiles for exceptions.
Choose Beetle PSX HW if you already use RetroArch
Beetle PSX HW makes sense when your saves, playlists, shaders and controller configuration already live in RetroArch, or when PGXP and selectable OpenGL/Vulkan filters are central to your setup. Its flexibility is valuable, but it also means more places for a port, core option or override to be misconfigured.
Choose software Beetle PSX when accuracy is the deciding factor
Use the software core to establish how a title behaves without hardware-renderer enhancements, to investigate a visual discrepancy or to favor faithful output over high-resolution presentation. Start with Memory only subpixel precision and native or modest scaling; test Memory + CPU only for a specific reason.
A practical setup checklist
- Use a 64-bit Windows 10/11, Linux or macOS environment where supported.
- Obtain a PS1 or PS2 BIOS legally and place it where the selected emulator expects firmware.
- Use legally dumped game media.
- Launch at native resolution before changing graphics options.
- Select a renderer supported by your GPU, then raise internal resolution gradually.
- Add one filter or geometry enhancement at a time.
- Keep 4:3 as the default and reserve widescreen for verified per-game cases.
- Bind the physical pad, confirm the emulated device type and test every button.
- Save a native-resolution software profile for troubleshooting.
- Store exceptions as per-game profiles instead of weakening the global configuration.
Verdict
DuckStation is the best first choice for most PC players because it delivers the clearest standalone workflow while covering the graphics and controller features people usually want. Beetle PSX HW is the stronger specialist option for RetroArch users who want PGXP, OpenGL or Vulkan and configurable upscalers. Software Beetle PSX remains the reference-oriented choice when compatibility behavior and an unembellished image matter more than maximum resolution. Whichever you select, a legally obtained BIOS, gradual graphics changes and a correct digital-versus-analog controller profile prevent most avoidable problems.
