The best PS4 controller depends on what you want to change about the DualShock 4: stick layout, size, connection, or extra controls. The DualShock 4 remains the safest all-round replacement because it is Sony’s official baseline and includes its familiar feature set. Alternatives can be a better fit for offset sticks, compact wired play, or remappable rear buttons—but licensing and PS4 compatibility do not guarantee every DualShock 4 feature.

How to choose a PS4 controller
Start with the problem you want the controller to solve rather than assuming an alternative is a better version of the DualShock 4. The most consequential differences are:
- Stick layout and grip: symmetrical sticks match the DualShock 4; offset sticks and a wider grip suit players who prefer an Xbox-style layout.
- Connection: wired models need a cable, while some wireless alternatives use a USB adapter rather than pairing directly over Bluetooth.
- Feature set: check specifically for a touchpad, headset jack, speaker, light bar, motion sensors, and vibration. A licensed PS4 controller may omit some or all of these.

For the closest straightforward replacement
Choose a DualShock 4 if you want the familiar Sony layout and feature set, or need a dependable second gamepad for a PS4. The updated revision is not a meaningful reason to replace a working controller according to Tech Advisor’s older guide; condition and regional availability are more practical considerations.
For offset sticks
The HORI ONYX Plus is the more clearly documented licensed choice: HORI specifies offset sticks, wireless operation through an included 2.4 GHz adapter, touchpad functionality, and a headset jack. The Nacon Asymmetric Wireless is another offset-layout option, with a wider grip and touchpad described by Tech Advisor, but it uses a USB dongle and omits several DualShock 4 features according to Nacon’s manual search result.

For compact or smaller-hand play
The HORI Wired Mini is explicitly compact, but it gives up multiple DualShock 4 functions, including its motion sensor and headset jack. Nacon’s Wired Compact line is another compact wired option; PlayStation identifies a touchpad, headset jack, and vibration motors, but verify the specific model’s full specification before ordering.
For rear buttons and profiles
The Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro is the most fully described pro-style choice in this group: its reported extras include four rear buttons, interchangeable sticks, adjustable weights, software configuration, and profiles. The Razer Raiju Ultimate also offers extra controls and interchangeable components, but its setup relies on a smartphone app. Both are older products, so a current listing should be checked carefully rather than assumed to be new stock.

For modular controls
The Thrustmaster eSwap Pro’s modular design is its main draw. Account for the cost and availability of separately sold modules, and consider whether wired-only play and the absence of motion controls or a light bar fit the games you play.
What “PS4-compatible” does—and does not—mean
Compatibility means a controller can be used for supported PS4 play; it does not mean it duplicates the DualShock 4. PlayStation’s overview specifically lists the HORI Wired Mini’s omissions: light bar, stereo headset jack, speaker, dual motors, and motion sensor. Check a game’s reliance on those features before choosing a compact or specialist controller.

PS5 compatibility is a separate question. PlayStation says licensed PS4 controllers with a standard gamepad form factor can work with PS4 games played on PS5, but PS5 games require a DualSense. Do not assume an alternative works with PS5 games merely because it works on PS4.

Older lists also name the Evil Shift for PS4 and GameSir VX2, but the available product-specific information does not establish enough current detail to recommend either here. The VX2 is a keyboard-and-mouse-style option rather than a standard gamepad, and its exact PS4 compatibility and suitability for a particular game need model-specific confirmation. Newer controllers such as Nacon Revolution 5 Pro and Victrix Pro BFG also should not be presumed PS4-compatible based on their newer-platform branding; check official specifications for the exact model.
