Check your console’s model group before buying accessories that attach to it; some fit only specific PS5 versions.

Best for more playable storage: an internal M.2 SSD
An M.2 SSD is the clearest choice if your goal is to expand storage while keeping PS5 games playable directly from the added drive. Sony says a compatible M.2 drive can download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games and media apps. By contrast, PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or M.2 storage before you can play them.

Before buying an M.2 drive, compare its full dimensions—including any heatsink—with Sony’s requirements. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, but meeting the listed specifications does not guarantee that every third-party drive will work. Sony also notes that game performance may not exactly match the console’s internal SSD, even when a drive exceeds the recommended speed.

Check the drive against Sony’s requirements
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Form factor: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110.
- Width: 25 mm maximum, including the cooling structure.
- Length: 30–110 mm, depending on the form factor.
- Thickness: 11.25 mm maximum, including the heatsink and heat-transfer sheet.
- Cooling: Effective heat dissipation is required; use a drive with a compatible heatsink or another suitable cooling structure.
These specifications come from PlayStation Support’s PS5 M.2 SSD requirements. Check the drive-plus-heatsink dimensions, not just the bare SSD, and verify the exact product listing before purchase.
What installation involves
Installing an M.2 drive requires opening the console’s covers and securing the drive in the expansion slot. Sony’s model-specific guide calls for a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and advises grounding yourself against static before handling the drive.

- Remove the console cover and the expansion-slot cover, then place the spacer in the position for the drive’s length.
- Insert and fasten the drive, then replace the covers.
- Format the SSD the first time you use it. Formatting erases existing data, so use a blank drive or back up anything you need beforehand.

Choose a controller according to who will use it and what they play. A second DualSense is the straightforward option for local multiplayer. A charging station can make controller charging more convenient, while console covers are an appearance choice. Neither changes how quickly games run. PlayStation also lists an HD camera and media remote among its accessories; consider those only if their specific functions fit your setup.

Check model compatibility before buying anything that attaches to or replaces part of the console. Sony specifies that the removable disc drive is for PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 model group (slim). Its vertical stand page lists compatibility with CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 slim model groups. Consult the current PlayStation accessories listings and the product’s compatibility details rather than assuming an accessory fits every PS5.
Best for playing away from the TV: PlayStation Portal
PlayStation Portal is for playing your PS5 console remotely over home Wi-Fi using its built-in display and controls. It is a remote-play option, not an upgrade to the PS5’s local storage, image output, or processing. Choose it if remote play is the feature you want; it is not a substitute for an internal SSD or a controller upgrade.
