1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe right disc-drive choice depends on your PS5 model. For a PS5 Digital Edition in the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 family, or a PS5 Pro in the CFI-7000 family, Sony’s detachable CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive is the compatible add-on. The original PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-1000) cannot use it, so owners of that model need a PlayStation 5 console with an integrated drive.
If you are buying a console now, compare the complete cost of a disc-edition PS5 with a supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1. Retail prices, stock, bundles and warranty coverage vary by country and change over time, so the model number and the all-in total matter more than a temporary listing price.

Quick recommendation by PS5 model
Check the CFI model number printed on the console or its box before ordering anything. The model group, not the console’s appearance or storage capacity, determines whether the detachable drive will fit and pair correctly.
| Your console | Compatible choice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 | Sony CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive | Add the drive, install it physically, and complete the required online pairing. |
| PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2100 | Sony CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive | Use the same model-specific installation and pairing process. |
| PS5 Pro CFI-7000 | Sony CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive | Add CFI-ZDD1; confirm the exact console model before purchase. |
| Original PS5 Digital Edition CFI-1000 | No detachable-drive option | Use a PS5 console with an integrated disc drive instead. |
| New console buyer | Integrated-drive PS5 or supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1 | Compare the complete purchase cost, availability, warranty and return terms in your region. |
Why the CFI model number is the deciding detail
Sony’s support documentation states that the PS5 Digital Edition in the CFI-1000 model group does not support disc-based games or media. That limitation is hardware-related; a software update or accessory cannot turn the original digital console into a disc model.

The CFI-ZDD1 is intended for the newer PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 families and for PS5 Pro consoles. Sony’s United States setup documentation identifies the supported groups as CFI-2000 and CFI-7000. If your label shows CFI-1000, do not order the drive expecting it to work.
How to verify your model
- Look for the model number on the console label or on the original packaging.
- Record the complete CFI group, including the four digits after “CFI-”.
- Match that group with the compatibility table above and the retailer’s accessory listing.
- Keep the model information until installation is complete; it is useful if you need to return an incompatible purchase.
Storage size, color, bundled game and regional packaging do not replace the CFI number as a compatibility check.
What the Sony CFI-ZDD1 adds
CFI-ZDD1 is a removable optical drive for compatible PS5 consoles. It restores access to a physical PS5 and PS4 game collection and also handles several movie-disc formats. The drive does not make every older PlayStation format playable.
| Disc type | Support on PS5 with CFI-ZDD1 |
|---|---|
| PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs | Supported |
| Compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs | Supported |
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs | Supported |
| Blu-ray movie discs | Supported |
| DVD media | Supported |
| PlayStation 2 software on disc | Not playable on PS5 |
| PlayStation 3 software on disc | Not playable on PS5 |
The PS2 and PS3 exclusions are format limitations, not a fault with an individual CFI-ZDD1 unit. Buying a disc drive will not provide backward compatibility for those generations.
Physical specifications
Sony’s instruction manual lists the drive at approximately 169 × 51 × 190 mm and 600 g. Allow room to install the drive and to access the console’s removable cover; do not place the console where cables or a shelf prevent the cover from being removed safely.
Option 1: Add CFI-ZDD1 to a PS5 Digital Slim
For an existing CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 owner, buying the drive is the direct route to a physical library. You keep the console you already own and add the optical hardware designed for that model family.

When this is the sensible choice
- You already own a substantial PS5 or compatible PS4 disc collection.
- Your current Digital Edition is a supported CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 model.
- You want to buy, borrow or trade physical games where those practices are available to you.
- You also want 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD playback.
What to include in the budget
Calculate the drive cost together with any required stand or other model-specific accessories sold in your market, rather than comparing the drive listing with the price of an entire console. Add delivery charges and account for the possibility that a retailer’s bundle or promotion changes the difference. There is no single worldwide street-price winner established for this accessory-versus-console decision.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Option 2: Add CFI-ZDD1 to a PS5 Pro
PS5 Pro systems use the CFI-7000 model group. The CFI-ZDD1 is the detachable drive specified for that family, so a Pro owner who wants physical games or movie discs can add the same accessory used by the supported Digital Slim families.
Check that the listing identifies CFI-ZDD1 and that the seller accepts returns in your region. Do not substitute an optical accessory intended for an older PlayStation model; the fit and pairing requirement are specific to the supported PS5 groups.
Option 3: Buy a PS5 with an integrated disc drive
A PS5 disc edition has its optical drive built into the console. This is the straightforward route for a new buyer who wants discs without performing an accessory installation.
Why an integrated drive can be better for a new buyer
- There is no separate drive to source, install or pair.
- The console and drive arrive as one product, simplifying warranty and return handling.
- You can begin using a physical PS5 or PS4 game disc immediately after the console’s initial setup and any required updates.
Why the detachable route can still win
- A supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1 may cost less in a particular sale or bundle.
- You can purchase the drive later, spreading the spending over time.
- You retain the option to run the console without the drive attached when your collection is entirely digital.
Those advantages depend on local pricing and availability. Compare the two complete configurations on the same day and include taxes, shipping, stand requirements, warranty length and return costs.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Option 4: Replace an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition
The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is the exception that rules out an add-on. Sony explicitly describes that model group as unable to play disc-based games or media. CFI-ZDD1 is not a workaround, and attempting to force a newer drive onto the older chassis can damage the console or accessory.

- Installation Instructions: No soldering or mating required. Need to replace the motherboard of the old optical drive with the new replacement optical drive, it is recommended to search for replacement tutorials on YouTube
- Note: Please check The model of your console before purchasing. The optical drive modules replacement of CFI‑1000, CFI‑1100, and CFI‑1200 are different

If you own CFI-1000 and need your physical library, the practical choices are to keep that console for digital games and obtain a PS5 with an integrated drive, or replace it with a supported Digital Edition and add CFI-ZDD1. Compare the resale, replacement and storage needs rather than buying an incompatible accessory first.
Cost comparison without relying on a temporary price
Because regional prices and stock change, use a simple total-cost calculation:
- Write down the current delivered price of an integrated-drive PS5 in your country.
- Write down the delivered price of a supported Digital Edition.
- Add the delivered price of CFI-ZDD1 to the Digital Edition figure.
- Include any stand, taxes, exchange-rate fees or return shipping that apply to your purchase.
- Compare warranty and retailer terms, not just the lower number.
| Purchase path | Hardware included | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated-drive PS5 | Console and optical drive in one unit | New buyers who want the simplest setup and one product warranty. |
| Supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1 | Digital console and separate removable drive | Owners who already have CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000, and buyers who find the combined total favorable. |
| Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1 | Incompatible combination | Do not buy; CFI-1000 does not support the accessory. |
A retailer’s one-day promotion is not evidence of a permanent price advantage. Recheck stock and the final checkout total before committing.

Installation and first-time setup
CFI-ZDD1 is a physical component, not a USB drive. Plan for a clear work area and follow the installation diagrams supplied with the accessory and your console model.
- Confirm compatibility. Verify CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 on the console or box. Stop if the label says CFI-1000.
- Update the console. Sony’s manual warns that behavior can depend on the PS5 system-software version. Install the current console update before troubleshooting a newly fitted drive.
- Shut down and prepare the console. Turn the PS5 off completely, disconnect it as directed in the manual, and place it on a stable surface with enough room to remove the cover.
- Install the drive using the model’s cover and bay instructions. Align the drive and cover as shown; do not use force if tabs or connectors do not line up.
- Reconnect and start the PS5. Let the console detect the newly installed hardware.
- Complete online pairing. Connect the PS5 to the internet and follow the on-screen pairing prompt. Sony’s product page states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.”
- Test with a supported disc. Use a PS5 game, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game, Blu-ray, DVD or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Remove the test disc if the console reports a format it cannot play.
The internet requirement applies to the initial drive-to-console pairing. It is separate from whether an individual game later requires an online connection for updates or multiplayer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a physical PS5 and PS4 collection
Once paired, insert a supported game disc and use the PS5’s game screen to start the installation or launch process. Keep the disc available: the console uses the physical disc as the entitlement check for that installation. A disc drive does not convert a physical copy into a digital license that can be used with no disc.

Compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs are included in Sony’s supported formats. Compatibility remains game-specific, so check a title’s PS5 backward-compatibility information if a particular PS4 release behaves unexpectedly. The drive itself supports the disc format; it does not guarantee that every PS4 title has a PS5 version or enhancement.

PS2 and PS3 software on disc is not playable on PS5, including when CFI-ZDD1 is installed. If your collection includes those generations, retain compatible legacy hardware or use an officially supported digital or streaming option where available; the accessory cannot change that limitation.
Movie-disc use
CFI-ZDD1 supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media in addition to game discs. This makes the accessory useful when the PS5 is also your living-room disc player.
Keep movie playback separate from game compatibility when evaluating the purchase. The presence of a 4K movie collection does not make PS2 or PS3 game discs playable, and a game disc’s generation does not determine whether a movie disc will work.
Warranty, stock and regional checks
Sony’s UK accessory page states a one-year warranty for CFI-ZDD1. Warranty duration, consumer protections and service arrangements can differ outside the UK, so read the terms attached to the unit sold in your country rather than assuming the UK period applies worldwide.
- Confirm the seller ships the exact CFI-ZDD1 model, not a similarly named accessory.
- Check whether the package is intended for your region and whether local support will handle a faulty drive.
- Read the return window before opening or installing the accessory.
- Inspect the final price, delivery date and stock status at checkout; marketplace listings can change.
- Keep the receipt, box and installation materials until the drive has paired and read a supported disc.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The drive is not detected
- Recheck that the console is CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000.
- Install the latest available PS5 system software, then restart the console.
- Power down and reseat the drive and cover according to the manual; never force the connector or tabs.
- If detection still fails, use the seller’s return process or Sony support while the warranty and return window are active.
Pairing does not complete
- Connect the PS5 to the internet; offline setup cannot satisfy the stated pairing requirement.
- Complete any pending system-software update before retrying.
- Restart the console and repeat the on-screen pairing process with the drive installed.
- Check Sony’s current support guidance if the software version has changed since the accessory manual was printed.
A disc is rejected
- Confirm that it is a supported PS5, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD disc.
- Do not use a PS2 or PS3 game disc expecting playback.
- Inspect the disc for dirt or damage and test another supported disc to distinguish a media problem from a drive problem.
The accessory will not physically fit
Stop immediately and verify the CFI group and installation orientation. The CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not compatible, and forcing parts together can cause damage that a return policy may not cover.
Decision checklist
- Existing CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 Digital Edition: choose CFI-ZDD1 if the combined cost and local warranty terms work for you.
- Existing CFI-7000 PS5 Pro: choose CFI-ZDD1 for physical games and supported movie discs.
- Existing CFI-1000 Digital Edition: do not buy the detachable drive; obtain a disc-equipped PS5 instead.
- Buying a console now: compare an integrated-drive PS5 with a supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1 using delivered, region-specific totals.
- Any buyer: verify the model number, internet availability for setup, installation space, stock, warranty and returns before paying.
Bottom line
CFI-ZDD1 is the correct physical-game upgrade for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000/CFI-2100 and PS5 Pro CFI-7000 consoles. It supports PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media, but it requires internet pairing and does not enable PS2 or PS3 disc playback. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot use it. For a new buyer, the best value is whichever configuration—integrated-drive PS5 or supported Digital Edition plus CFI-ZDD1—has the lower complete cost and better local warranty and return terms at the time of purchase.
