It is approachable enough for beginners and families, inventive enough for experienced platform-game fans, and one of the clearest demonstrations of the DualSense controller and PS5 hardware. It is not the right answer for every player, though: Elden Ring is better for open-world exploration, Baldur’s Gate 3 for role-playing freedom, Split Fiction for two-player co-op, and Gran Turismo 7 for serious racing.
This is a March 2026 snapshot of the best games available to play on PS5 by March 31, 2026. It includes PS5 exclusives, PS5-native third-party games, older releases that remain essential, and the strongest 2026 releases so far. It does not mean games released only during 2026.
Quick answer: the best PS5 games by player type
| What you want | Recommendation | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Astro Bot | Single-player only |
| Best cinematic action adventure | God of War Ragnarök | Best after God of War (2018) |
| Best open-world RPG | Elden Ring | Combat is deliberately demanding |
| Best story-driven RPG | Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | Turn-based combat includes real-time inputs |
| Best traditional deep RPG | Baldur’s Gate 3 | A large, long-form commitment |
| Best two-player co-op | Split Fiction | Designed for exactly two players; cannot be played solo |
| Best online co-op | Helldivers 2 | Online-only; no offline single-player mode |
| Best PS5 technology showcase | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Third-person action rather than a deep RPG |

| Best racing game | Gran Turismo 7 | Some features require an internet connection |
| Best horror game | Resident Evil Requiem | Not suitable for younger children |
| Best 2026 action RPG | Nioh 3 | Has a high difficulty ceiling |

| Best conditional 2026 multiplayer game | Marathon | Requires an internet connection and is built around online extraction play |
What counts as a PS5 game here?
For this guide, a PS5 game is any worthwhile experience available to play on PS5 during this March 2026 update. That includes a PS5-exclusive or PS5-first release, a multiplatform game with a native PS5 version, and an older PS4 game that remains excellent when played through a PS5 version or backward compatibility.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Exclusivity is a useful label, not a quality test. Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, Split Fiction, Monster Hunter Wilds and Resident Evil Requiem belong on a best-PS5 list because they are outstanding games on the console even when they are also available on PC or other platforms. This practical definition is also closer to what buyers usually need from a current list of games they can play now.
| Platform category | Examples | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| PS5-only or PS5-exclusive experiences | Astro Bot, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yōtei, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Returnal, Stellar Blade and Demon’s Souls | These are designed around the PS5 version or are listed as PS5-only/exclusive by PlayStation at the time of this update. Platform status can change if a PC version is released later. |
| PS5 and PS4 games | God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and Elden Ring | They have both PS5 and PS4 versions. The PS5 version may offer better loading, visuals or controller features, but a PS5 is not the only way to play them. |
| PS5-native third-party games | Baldur’s Gate 3, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Split Fiction, Resident Evil Requiem and Nioh 3 | These have a proper PS5 build but are not automatically PlayStation exclusives. |
| PS4 games playable on PS5 | The wider PS4 backward-compatible library | PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but backward compatibility does not guarantee a native PS5 version, upgraded visuals or every DualSense feature. |
Upgrade eligibility varies by game, edition and region. A physical PS4-to-PS5 upgrade generally requires a PS5 with a disc drive; a PS4 disc cannot be used for that purpose on a PS5 Digital Edition, and the disc normally needs to remain inserted when playing the upgraded digital PS5 version. Check the current PlayStation compatibility and upgrade guidance before buying.
Best PS5 game overall: Astro Bot
Astro Bot
- Best for: almost anyone, especially beginners, families and platform-game fans
- Players: single-player
- Platform: PS5-only
- Difficulty: approachable main adventure with optional tougher challenges
- Commitment: short-to-medium sessions, with additional challenge content for completionists
Astro Bot is the safest all-purpose recommendation because it rarely asks the player to tolerate a major downside. Its controls are immediately understandable, its level design continually introduces new ideas, and its optional challenge stages give more experienced players something to master without making the main path unnecessarily punishing.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
It also makes unusually effective use of the console. PlayStation lists more than 50 planets, over 150 PlayStation character cameos, DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers and 3D audio. It is a PS5-only, single-player game rather than a couch co-op title, and it does not offer multiplayer simply because it looks like a family game. The Game Awards named it 2024’s Game of the Year, and its PS5 review page has a 94 Metascore at the time of writing. Metacritic’s score is useful context, but the recommendation here is based on accessibility, consistency and hardware fit rather than one aggregate number.

Main drawback: players looking for a deep RPG, horror, realistic racing or competitive multiplayer should choose another game below.
The best PS5 games for different kinds of players
Best cinematic action adventure: God of War Ragnarök
God of War Ragnarök is the best choice for a polished, story-led action adventure with weighty combat, exploration and a substantial campaign. It is available on PS5, PS4 and PC, so it is not a PS5 exclusive, but the PS5 version remains one of the console’s strongest big-budget adventures. Its accessibility support and adjustable experience make it more welcoming than its mythological scale and dramatic combat might suggest.
Play God of War (2018) first if possible. Ragnarök can be followed on its own, but the earlier game provides essential emotional and character context. The US PlayStation listing showed the game in the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog at this update; catalog availability varies by region, tier and date, so treat that as subscription access rather than permanent ownership.
Best open-world RPG: Elden Ring
Elden Ring is the strongest PS5 recommendation for players who want discovery, build variety and freedom of approach. Its open world rewards curiosity rather than sending every player through one prescribed route, while its combat gives weapons, spells, equipment and character builds meaningful differences.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThis is a poor first choice for somebody who dislikes difficult combat, but it is an excellent choice for a player who enjoys learning enemy patterns and solving challenges through experimentation. You can play the main experience solo without PS Plus. Online play supports up to six players, but online multiplayer on PS5 generally requires PS Plus.
Best story-driven RPG: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a strong pick for players who want a focused, character-driven RPG rather than an enormous open world. It combines turn-based decision-making with real-time dodges, parries, counters and free-aim actions, so battles demand attention even when the party is choosing commands from a menu.
It is presented as a PS5-only console experience in the supplied PlayStation listing and has a 92 PS5 Metascore on Metacritic. Its main appeal is the combination of a distinctive setting, tactical party combat and a story that rewards sustained attention. Choose it over Elden Ring if narrative direction matters more to you than unrestricted exploration.
Best traditional deep RPG: Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the best PS5 RPG for players who want role-playing freedom above all else. Party composition, dialogue choices, exploration and combat decisions can produce dramatically different situations, making it a game to discuss with friends rather than simply finish and forget.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is a third-party game available on PS5, not a PlayStation exclusive. Expect a large commitment and a slower, more deliberate pace than an action RPG. It is especially good for players who enjoy experimenting with consequences and building a party around their preferred approach.
Best two-player co-op campaign: Split Fiction
Split Fiction is the recommendation when the purchase decision involves one specific partner. It is designed exclusively for two players, supports local couch co-op and online play, and includes a Friend’s Pass that can allow one owner to invite another player.

- A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.
- SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.
It is not a solo game and does not become one if the second player leaves. Local co-op does not require an internet connection; online co-op does, and online multiplayer on PlayStation generally requires PS Plus. That focus is its strength: the campaign is built around cooperation instead of adding a token multiplayer mode to a single-player game.
Best online co-op: Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 is the best fit for a group that wants chaotic four-player missions and ongoing online play. It supports cross-play between PS5 and PC and is built around squads working together under pressure.
The trade-off is decisive: it requires online play and has no offline single-player mode. PS Plus is required on PlayStation. Its long-term value also depends on active servers, a healthy player population, balance changes and continued post-launch support, so it is a different kind of purchase from a self-contained game such as Astro Bot or Ratchet & Clank.
Best PS5 technology showcase: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart remains one of the clearest demonstrations of what a PS5-native game can do. Its rapid dimensional transitions, detailed worlds, ray tracing, 3D audio, haptics and adaptive triggers make the hardware features concrete rather than merely theoretical. PlayStation also lists a Performance Mode targeting 60fps; that is a target, not a promise of a permanently locked frame rate in every situation.
The campaign is approachable, and PlayStation describes it as a standalone entry, so newcomers do not need to work through the older games first. It is a particularly good first PS5 purchase for somebody who wants colourful third-person action with spectacular presentation rather than a punishing challenge.
Best difficult action game: Returnal
Returnal is for players who want fast third-person shooting, demanding encounters and the tension of starting another run after failure. Its roguelike structure uses repeated attempts and changing environments as part of the game’s identity, not as a side mode.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Returnal is a poor recommendation for someone who wants steady progress, relaxed sessions or an adjustable difficulty setting. It is an excellent hardware showcase for a player who values responsive combat and wants a challenge that remains demanding well after the opening hours.
Best racing game: Gran Turismo 7
Gran Turismo 7 is the most comprehensive racing choice on PS5. Its campaign progression, Driving School, tuning, collecting, photography, Arcade options and online competition give it a broader range than a game that only offers quick races.
It supports online races for up to 20 players, and the PS5 version supports PS VR2 through an update. Some features require an internet connection, so it is not the right pick for a completely offline player. For a beginner, Driving School provides a clearer learning path than jumping directly into online competition.
Best horror game available by March 31: Resident Evil Requiem
Resident Evil Requiem released on PS5 on February 27, 2026 and is the strongest horror recommendation in this update. It features two protagonists with distinct gameplay styles, first- and third-person perspectives, investigation, puzzles, crafting and action combat.
Its 89 PS5 Metascore on Metacritic provides a useful review snapshot, while the more practical reason to choose it is variety: it can shift between vulnerable survival-horror investigation and more active combat. It also works well for shorter sessions, although its horror, violence and fear content make it unsuitable for young children.

- Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, return for an exciting new adventure in the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. Swing, jump, and utilize the new Web Wings to travel across Marvel’s New York, quickly switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to experience different stories and epic new powers, as the iconic villain Venom threatens to destroy their lives, their city, and the ones they love.
- An evolution of the Spider-Man story: The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships, and their duty to protect those in need.
- Experience two playable Spider-Men: Quickly swap between both Spider-Men as you explore an expanded Marvel’s New York. Experience Peter’s new symbiote abilities and Miles’ explosive bio-electric venom powers, and discover upgradeable, high-tech equipment that enhances the combat experience for extensive gameplay depth and variety.
- Battle iconic Marvel Super Villains: Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and many more!
Best 2026 action RPG: Nioh 3
Nioh 3 launched on February 6, 2026 for PS5 and PC. It is designed as a standalone experience, so newcomers do not need to complete earlier Nioh games before starting. Its open-field exploration, demanding combat and online co-op for up to three players make it a strong new choice for fans of technical action RPGs.
Its difficulty ceiling is high, so it is better suited to players who enjoy learning systems and refining execution than to somebody seeking a relaxed adventure. Choose it over Elden Ring if the combat challenge is the main attraction and you prefer a more focused action-game structure.
Most ambitious 2026 open-world game: Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert launched on March 19, 2026. Its appeal is ambition: traversal, varied combat and a systemic open world that attempts to support many different kinds of activity. It is the 2026 game on this list with the biggest sense of scale.
It needs a more careful recommendation than the games above. PlayStation lists 30, 40 and 60fps modes on PS5 and PS5 Pro, but mode choice and performance are not the same thing as a locked frame rate. GameSpot’s 7/10 review identified performance problems and uneven storytelling alongside the game’s strengths. Buy it for the world and range of systems if you can accept technical rough edges; do not buy it expecting the most consistently polished open-world RPG on PS5.
Best conditional 2026 multiplayer recommendation: Marathon
Marathon released on March 5, 2026, but it should not be treated as a universal recommendation for somebody buying a PS5 for offline games. It is fundamentally an online extraction shooter and requires an internet connection.
It is worth considering if you specifically want a competitive, service-based multiplayer game and have a group or community to play with. Its value will depend on server health, player population, balance, updates and post-launch support. Players seeking a self-contained campaign should choose Astro Bot, Ratchet & Clank, Resident Evil Requiem or another offline-capable recommendation instead. See PlayStation’s Marathon support page for current online requirements.
Best new PS5 games released by March 31, 2026
Do not mix later 2026 games into a March-dated recommendation. The current PlayStation games hub separates available and upcoming games and lists later titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine, Grand Theft Auto VI, Control: Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Phantom Blade Zero. Those titles were not available to recommend on March 31, 2026.
Best PS5 exclusives and PS5-defining games
If owning a PS5 specifically is the reason you are shopping, start with this group. Remember that exclusivity is time-sensitive: a game can be PS5-only at launch and later receive a PC version. The table describes the PS5 experience and the platform status relevant to this update, rather than promising permanent lifetime exclusivity.
| Game | Why it belongs on a PS5-first shortlist | Series context |
|---|---|---|
| Astro Bot | PS5-only platforming, extensive DualSense features and broad accessibility | Standalone |
| Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Fast dimensional transitions, ray tracing, haptics, adaptive triggers and 3D audio | Standalone entry; suitable for newcomers |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | PS5-only single-player superhero action with switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales | Playable without prior knowledge; earlier games add context |
| Returnal | Fast, demanding PS5-native roguelike shooting | Standalone |
| Death Stranding 2: On the Beach | PS5-only, PS5 Pro Enhanced and updated with additional content and features in March 2026 | A story recap is available, but the first game helps |
| Ghost of Yōtei | PS5-exclusive, PS5 Pro Enhanced, with haptics, adaptive triggers, 3D audio and enhanced ray tracing on PS5 Pro | New setting and characters; no need to treat it as a direct prerequisite-heavy sequel |
| Stellar Blade | A PS5-focused action game with PS5 Pro-related enhancements | Standalone |
| Demon’s Souls | A demanding remake for players who want technical melee combat and a darker atmosphere | Standalone remake experience |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | PS5-only and built around the console’s hardware, with a large RPG adventure | Ideally play Final Fantasy VII Remake first; Rebirth is the second part of a planned three-game remake project |
| Horizon Forbidden West | A polished action RPG with adjustable difficulty and a clear progression loop | Play Horizon Zero Dawn first for story context, though the game is playable on its own |
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is particularly easy to recommend to newcomers because its movement and combat are straightforward and its story can be followed without completing the previous games. However, the original Spider-Man and Miles Morales make the relationships and history more meaningful.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is for a more specific audience: players who enjoy unusual, deliberate traversal and story-heavy design. It includes a story recap, but familiarity with the first game remains valuable. Its March 2026 update added content and features, which makes the current version a better point of entry than an early launch snapshot.
Ghost of Yōtei is a strong choice for PS5 owners who want a large cinematic action game and a showcase for the base console or PS5 Pro. The Pro enhancements are optional; the game remains playable on the standard PS5.

Best third-party games on PS5
These are not PlayStation-owned or necessarily exclusive, but they are among the strongest games to install on a PS5. Their inclusion answers the practical question most owners actually have: what should I play on this console?
| Game | Best for | Why choose it on PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring | Open-world exploration and challenging action RPG combat | Build variety, freedom of route and solo or online play |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Branching choices and traditional role-playing | Party composition, consequences and long-form storytelling |
| Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | Focused story-driven RPG play | Turn-based combat enhanced by real-time dodges, parries, counters and free aim |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Large-scale Japanese RPG adventure | PS5-native presentation; best experienced after Final Fantasy VII Remake |
| Resident Evil 4 | Action horror and shorter, replayable sessions | A strong alternative if you want horror with a more established action balance |
| Monster Hunter Wilds | Long-term co-op progression | Hunting, equipment progression and multiplayer sessions |
| Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition | Adult open-world action RPG | A substantial single-player world for players who want quests and character builds |
| Alan Wake 2 | Surreal narrative horror | Story, atmosphere and investigation over traditional competitive play |
| Silent Hill 2 | Psychological horror | A slower, oppressive horror experience rather than an action-heavy shooter |
| Metaphor: ReFantazio | Traditional turn-based RPG structure | For players who prefer party planning and a substantial story campaign |
Best PS5 games by genre

Best PS5 games for specific players
Best for beginners
- Astro Bot: simple controls, a clear premise and optional challenge stages.
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: a standalone story and accessible third-person action.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: adjustable difficulty, familiar superhero structure and easy-to-understand movement.
- Horizon Forbidden West: adjustable difficulty and a transparent action-RPG progression loop.
- Gran Turismo 7: Driving School gives a new driver a structured way to learn.
Best for children and families
Start with Astro Bot, then consider Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy: A Big Adventure and suitable LEGO games. Gran Turismo 7 can work well for supervised family play, but online interaction and competition need parental oversight. Astro Bot is single-player, so it is family-friendly but not a multiplayer game.
Visual style is not enough to establish that a game is appropriate for a child. Check the relevant age rating for the child’s region, along with violence, language, fear and online communication features.
Best for short sessions
Astro Bot and Ratchet & Clank are easy to pick up for a level or short stretch. Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Requiem suit players who want focused horror progress, while Returnal works for short sessions only if you enjoy the possibility that a run may end without conventional campaign progress. Split Fiction is a good short-session choice when you have a partner ready to play.
Best for a long-term commitment
Choose Baldur’s Gate 3, Elden Ring, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Monster Hunter Wilds, Gran Turismo 7, Crimson Desert or Nioh 3. These games offer enough exploration, progression, combat depth or replayable activity to support a large commitment. The right choice depends on whether you want story and decisions, open-ended discovery, racing progression, co-op hunting or difficult combat.
Best for players who dislike difficult combat
Pick Astro Bot, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or Horizon Forbidden West. Their accessible control schemes and difficulty options make them safer choices than Elden Ring, Returnal, Demon’s Souls or Nioh 3.
Best for players who want a challenge
Returnal is the purest recommendation for fast, repeated-run combat. Elden Ring offers more freedom in how you solve difficult encounters, while Demon’s Souls and Nioh 3 are better for players who want demanding melee systems and a high execution ceiling.

PS5 Pro is not required for any recommendation in this guide. The clearest Pro-related picks include Ghost of Yōtei, Death Stranding 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Stellar Blade, Nioh 3 and Crimson Desert. Official listings identify enhancements for these games, but the exact image-quality and performance options depend on the game, patch, display and selected mode. Do not assume that a Pro-enhanced label means native 4K or a locked 60fps mode.
Online play, internet and PS Plus requirements
Most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer games require PlayStation Plus, although free-to-play games and individual exceptions can differ. The key distinction is whether you need an internet connection for the core game, for optional asynchronous features, or for all play.
| Game | Internet required for core play? | PS Plus required? | Multiplayer details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helldivers 2 | Yes | Yes | Online-only squads of up to four; PS5-PC cross-play |
| Marathon | Yes | Yes for online play | Online extraction shooter |
| Split Fiction | No for local co-op; yes online | Yes online | Two players, locally or online; Friend’s Pass available |
| Elden Ring | No for solo play | Yes online | Up to six online players |
| Gran Turismo 7 | Some features require an online connection | Yes online | Online competition for up to 20 players |
| Death Stranding 2 | No for the core experience; online features need a connection | No for asynchronous interaction | Indirect player interaction rather than conventional co-op |
| Astro Bot | No | No | Single-player only |
For the official subscription rules, see PlayStation’s PS Plus support page. A game included in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog is not permanently owned: access can depend on your tier, country, continued membership and whether the game remains in the catalog. The PS Plus usage terms can change, so verify the current US listing before treating a catalog game as your long-term library.
What to check before buying
PS5 version versus PS4 version
Do not assume that a PS4 game played on PS5 is identical to a native PS5 release. A native version may include faster loading, higher visual settings, DualSense support, ray tracing or separate performance modes, but the exact benefits vary. Confirm which edition you are buying, especially when a store page presents PS4 and PS5 versions together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
- Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
- Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
- Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.
Disc versus Digital Edition
A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 disc. If you are counting on a physical PS4 upgrade, you need a PS5 with a disc drive, and you may need to keep the original disc inserted to authenticate the upgraded version. Digital upgrade eligibility can also vary by edition and publisher.
PS Plus is not a universal requirement
You do not need PS Plus for ordinary offline single-player games such as Astro Bot, Ratchet & Clank or Returnal. You generally do need it for paid online multiplayer such as Elden Ring, Helldivers 2, Split Fiction and Gran Turismo 7. Free-to-play games can be exceptions, and some online features may have their own requirements.
Do not buy on an old performance claim
Performance modes, patches and PS5 Pro support can change. On the PS5 home screen, highlight the game, press the Options button and select Check for Update to verify that the current patch is installed. The PlayStation update guidance explains the process. Treat a listed 30fps or 60fps mode as a mode or target unless the developer explicitly guarantees more; actual performance can vary by patch, console model, display and graphics setting.
Do not use a sale price as an evergreen comparison
PlayStation Store prices fluctuate by country, edition, subscription and sale period. A game may be excellent value at a discount and less compelling at full digital list price. If you compare prices, record the country, storefront, edition and exact date checked rather than presenting a temporary sale as the normal price.
How these recommendations are judged
This is not a ranking created by sorting Metacritic scores. The recommendations weigh ten practical factors:
- Quality of the core gameplay
- Distinctiveness and identity
- How well the game fits PS5 hardware
- Performance and technical stability
- Quality of content rather than raw quantity
- Accessibility and difficulty options
- Value at its current price or through a subscription
- Suitability for new players
- Dependence on online services
- Whether the recommendation should remain useful after further patches and platform changes
That is why Astro Bot can be the best overall recommendation without being the best game for every genre. It is also why Crimson Desert is included with a performance warning, and why Helldivers 2 and Marathon are marked as conditional choices rather than being treated like self-contained single-player games.
Games to watch after the March 2026 update
Upcoming games should not be presented as games you can buy and play today. The PlayStation games hub separates available titles from upcoming ones. The titles listed there, including Marvel’s Wolverine, Grand Theft Auto VI, Control: Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Phantom Blade Zero, belong on a watchlist rather than the current recommendations unless their availability and reviews have been confirmed after this March 31 cutoff.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best PS5 game in 2026?
Astro Bot is the best overall recommendation for most PS5 owners because it is approachable, consistently inventive, single-player and built around PS5 features. Choose Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, Gran Turismo 7 or Helldivers 2 instead if your priority is open-world RPGs, deep role-playing, racing or online co-op.
Is Astro Bot multiplayer?
No. Astro Bot is a single-player PS5 game. It is suitable for families to watch or take turns playing, but it does not support local or online multiplayer.
Do I need PS Plus to play PS5 games?
No. Offline single-player games such as Astro Bot, Ratchet & Clank and Returnal do not require PS Plus. Paid online multiplayer games generally do, including Helldivers 2, Elden Ring, Split Fiction and Gran Turismo 7. Free-to-play games and individual exceptions can follow different rules.
Can I play PS4 games on PS5?
Yes. PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but backward compatibility does not automatically provide a native PS5 upgrade or every PS5 feature. Physical PS4 upgrade paths generally require a PS5 with a disc drive.
Which PS5 game is best for beginners?
Astro Bot is the easiest default choice. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 are also good starting points because they offer approachable controls, adjustable difficulty or structured learning.

Helldivers 2 and Marathon require online play. Split Fiction needs internet for online co-op but not local co-op. Gran Turismo 7 requires a connection for some features. Elden Ring can be played solo offline, and Death Stranding 2 can be played without online asynchronous features, although its indirect player interaction needs connectivity.
The Bottom Line
Start with Astro Bot unless you already know what kind of game you want. Choose God of War Ragnarök for cinematic action, Elden Ring for open-world challenge, Baldur’s Gate 3 for role-playing freedom, Split Fiction for two-player co-op and Gran Turismo 7 for racing. Among games released by March 31, 2026, Nioh 3 is the strongest action-game pick, Resident Evil Requiem leads horror, and Crimson Desert is the ambitious but technically compromised choice. Check the edition, PS Plus requirement, online dependency and current patch before buying.
