On a widescreen television, open the game’s emulator menu and choose 4:3 for 16:9 when that option exists. Leave the console at a normal 60 Hz output unless the specific title and display document a higher mode; 120 Hz and VRR do not create a faster PS2 game by themselves.
If you see flicker, a blank screen or an unstable signal, troubleshoot the HDMI chain before changing emulator options: update the television, connect the PS5 directly, use the correct HDMI 2.1 port and a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, then try Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2.

The best baseline settings
These settings are a safe starting point for a PS2 Classic on a modern 16:9 TV. They prioritize correct geometry, predictable HDR behavior and a reliable signal rather than promising a universal resolution or frame rate that Sony does not publish for the whole catalog.
| Goal | Setting and path | Recommended value | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Resolution | Automatic | The PS5 detects the television and selects its highest supported output resolution. |
| HDR handling | Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR | On When Supported | HDR games can use HDR, while non-HDR software remains SDR instead of being forcibly converted. |
| Aspect ratio | In the individual game’s emulator menu, when available | 4:3 for 16:9 | Preserves the original PS2 image geometry on a widescreen display. |
| Refresh-rate baseline | Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > 120 Hz Output | Leave off unless the title and TV support 120 Hz | 120 Hz output does not increase a PS2 Classic’s internal frame rate. |
| Variable refresh | Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > VRR | Use only with a compatible TV and a title that behaves correctly | VRR synchronizes display refresh to supported software; it is not a universal emulator fix. |
| Screen boundaries | Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area | Fit the image to the visible edges | Corrects cropping or excessive borders caused by display overscan or scaling. |
There is no single Sony-published internal-resolution, texture-filter or frame-rate profile for every PS2 Classic. Those characteristics can differ by game and by emulator update, so use the title’s own menu before assuming a console-wide setting will change them.

What PS2 Classics are on PS5
A PS5 does not natively read original PlayStation 2 discs. Sony’s PS5 FAQ states that the console plays PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, but not original PlayStation, PS2 or PS3 games. PS2 Classics are selected digital re-releases delivered through current PlayStation Store or PlayStation Plus offerings, with an emulator package attached to each supported title.
The practical consequence is important when troubleshooting: inserting a PS2 disc, changing the console’s disc-region behavior or expecting every PS2 release to appear in the catalog cannot solve an emulator presentation problem. Check the current Store listing for the exact digital edition and its supported platform. Catalog availability, patches and menu options can change by region and over time.
Set the PS5’s video output correctly
1. Use Automatic resolution first
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set Resolution to Automatic. Sony describes this mode as detecting the TV’s capabilities and selecting the best available resolution. It is a hand-shake setting, not a command to render the PS2 game internally at 4K.

If you manually force 1080p or 2160p while diagnosing a problem, return to Automatic after testing. A forced mode can hide whether the television, cable or intermediary device is rejecting a signal. It also cannot add detail that the individual PS2 Classic was not authored to provide.
2. Keep HDR at On When Supported
Set HDR to On When Supported. Sony explains that Always On converts non-HDR applications and games to HDR, whereas On When Supported leaves non-HDR content in SDR. Most PS2 Classics should therefore be viewed in their intended SDR path unless the particular release advertises HDR support.

If a game looks gray, over-bright or oddly saturated after selecting Always On, switch back to On When Supported before changing the television’s picture preset. This separates a console-wide HDR conversion from the game’s own artwork and emulator output.
3. Check Adjust Display Area
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area. Follow the on-screen guide until the boundary markers sit at the visible edges of the panel. Use this when menus or HUD elements are cut off, or when the picture appears smaller than expected with an unnecessary border.

This control changes the console’s output framing. It does not turn a 4:3 game into a widescreen game and it does not repair stretching caused by the title’s aspect-ratio option.
4. Treat 120 Hz as an output feature, not a performance upgrade
120 Hz Output is found under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony defines it as enabling 120 Hz video output for compatible televisions and games that support a 120 Hz frame rate. A PS2 Classic that renders at a lower cadence will not become a 120-frame-per-second game simply because the television receives a 120 Hz signal.
Keep a normal 60 Hz baseline while establishing stable behavior. Enable 120 Hz only when the display supports it and the individual game or its current documentation identifies a compatible mode. If enabling it produces a blank screen, flicker or an unexpected 1080p/120 Hz signal, return it to the baseline and follow the signal-recovery steps below.

5. Use VRR selectively
VRR adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time for supported televisions and games. It can be useful when a supported title has small timing variations, but it is not a universal solution for an emulator that is blurry, stretched or genuinely dropping frames.

Disable it first when you see pulsing brightness, scan-line artifacts, intermittent black screens or other behavior that was absent at the normal refresh rate.
Correct the picture inside the game
Choose 4:3 for 16:9 when available
Most original PS2 software was composed for a 4:3 display. On a 16:9 television, a title that outputs a stretched 4:3 frame makes characters and environments look visibly wide. Open the game’s emulator or pause menu and select 4:3 for 16:9 when that label is present. The TV will then show vertical side bars while preserving the intended proportions.
A February 28, 2025 report documented this option arriving in several PS2 Classics, including Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter. The report also noted that rollout and menu behavior are title-specific. Do not assume that one game’s menu location, wording or default applies to another game, and check the current release rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Do not assume every emulator has the same controls
Some releases expose aspect ratio, smoothing, borders or other presentation choices; others expose fewer controls. If an option is absent, that is a limitation of that title’s current emulator package, not evidence that the PS5’s global resolution setting is being ignored. Sony has not published one universal filter matrix for the catalog.

When a game offers several image modes, change one option at a time and return to the same scene for comparison. A sharpness filter can make menus look cleaner while adding halos to low-resolution textures, and a smoothing option can hide shimmer while making text softer. Keep the mode that preserves readable text and stable geometry on your particular panel.
Fix common visual and motion problems
The picture is stretched
- Open the game’s emulator menu and choose 4:3 for 16:9 if available.
- Confirm the television is not applying a separate “zoom,” “wide” or “fit” picture mode.
- Leave Adjust Display Area for edge framing; it cannot correct aspect ratio.
- If no aspect-ratio control exists, the title may not support a non-stretched widescreen presentation in its current release.
The image looks blurry
- Verify that the PS5 is on Resolution: Automatic and the TV is receiving the expected signal.
- Inspect the title’s emulator menu for a smoothing or filter switch and compare it in a fixed scene.
- Check whether the television is adding its own noise reduction, motion processing or overscan. Use the TV’s neutral game picture mode while testing.
- Do not infer that a 4K television should receive a 4K-native PS2 image. Internal rendering and scaling are title-specific and are not published as one catalog-wide target.
The image flickers or the screen goes blank
First treat this as a signal-chain problem, especially if it appears when changing refresh rate or launching a game. Update the TV firmware, connect the PS5 directly to the television, use the television’s HDMI 2.1 port when seeking 4K/120 Hz, and use either the cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
Then open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and try Video Transfer Rate -1. If the symptom remains, try -2. Sony documents these lower transfer-rate choices as a way to improve picture quality when flicker occurs. They reduce the signal bandwidth; they do not improve a game’s internal rendering.
Motion looks uneven
Keep the output at the normal 60 Hz baseline and disable VRR’s unsupported-game option while isolating the cause. A 60 Hz output describes the display timing, not a guarantee that every PS2 game is internally locked to 60 frames per second. Individual games can have their own frame-rate limits, timing quirks or emulator patches.
If the unevenness occurs only after enabling 120 Hz or VRR, restore the baseline and test the game again. If it is present in the same scene with baseline output, consult that title’s current emulator notes or Store information; there is no console-wide setting that guarantees identical timing across the catalog.

The picture has black borders or is cropped
Black side bars are expected when a 4:3 image is correctly displayed on a 16:9 screen. A border on all sides or missing HUD edges is different: use Adjust Display Area, check the TV’s overscan or zoom mode, and verify that no receiver or switch is applying its own scaling. Do not remove intentional side bars by stretching the image if preserving geometry is your priority.

- Update the television’s firmware and restart both the TV and PS5.
- Disconnect receivers, soundbars, capture devices and HDMI switches. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV.
- For a 4K/120 Hz test, use the TV’s HDMI 2.1 port and the PS5-supplied cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and return to Resolution: Automatic.
- Leave 120 Hz Output off during the first stability test. Re-enable it only after the normal signal is reliable and the title supports it.
- Set VRR to the compatible-TV mode. If Apply to Unsupported Games causes artifacts or dropouts, turn it off.
- Try Video Transfer Rate -1, then -2, if flicker continues.
- Once the picture is stable, reconnect one intermediary device at a time and test after each change.
This sequence separates a console setting from a cable, port, firmware or intermediary-device fault. If the problem returns only when one device is reintroduced, leave that device out of the display path or use a certified replacement.
Configure audio without affecting emulation
Audio controls are under Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Select the actual output device, set HDMI Device Type to match a television or AV amplifier, and choose an Audio Format (Priority) that the connected equipment supports.

Choose settings by television setup
| Your setup | Start with | Change only when |
|---|---|---|
| 16:9 TV, direct PS5 connection | Automatic resolution; HDR On When Supported; 4:3 for 16:9 in the game; normal 60 Hz | Enable 120 Hz or VRR only after confirming title and TV support. |
| 4K/120 Hz TV with HDMI 2.1 | Automatic resolution; certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable; 120 Hz off during initial testing | Turn on 120 Hz for a documented compatible game. Use -1/-2 if flicker appears. |
| TV with VRR support | VRR for supported games; Apply to Unsupported Games off initially | Test the unsupported-game option only if you can verify stable behavior on that TV. |
| Receiver or HDMI switch in the chain | Bypass it while troubleshooting; use direct HDMI first | Reconnect it after a stable baseline is established. |
| Older or 1080p TV | Automatic resolution; HDR On When Supported; normal 60 Hz | Do not force 4K/120 Hz features the display cannot accept. |
A per-game setup checklist
- Confirm that the Store or PlayStation Plus edition is the supported PS2 Classic release, not an original PS2 disc.
- Launch with the PS5 on Automatic resolution, HDR On When Supported and a normal 60 Hz baseline.
- Open the game’s emulator menu and look for an aspect-ratio control. Select 4:3 for 16:9 when offered.
- Check the same fixed scene for geometry, text clarity, borders and motion before enabling optional filters.
- If the game is unstable, disable VRR’s unsupported-game application and 120 Hz output, then retest.
- For flicker or signal loss, follow the HDMI recovery sequence instead of repeatedly changing in-game filters.
- Record the title version, console output mode and TV model when reporting a problem; emulator behavior can change with patches and differs between releases.
What these settings can and cannot guarantee
Automatic resolution, HDR On When Supported and correct 4:3 presentation address the most common configuration mistakes. They cannot turn every PS2 Classic into a native 4K or locked-60-fps game, and 120 Hz or VRR cannot manufacture a higher internal frame rate. The individual title remains the authority for available emulator menus, rendering changes and aspect-ratio behavior.
For a stable setup, establish the direct-HDMI 60 Hz baseline first, correct the game’s geometry, then add optional display features one at a time. That order makes it clear whether a change improves the picture or merely introduces a new signal-compatibility variable.
