Best PS5 Settings for Resident Evil 4 Remake: HDR, VRR, Performance and Resolution Modes

By VGSources Team 11 min read

For most players, start Resident Evil 4 Remake on a base PS5 in Performance Mode with VRR set to Automatic, ray tracing disabled, HDR calibrated on your own display, chromatic aberration off and lens distortion off. Choose Resolution Mode only when sharper reconstruction matters more than perfectly even motion. On PS5 Pro, Resolution Mode at 60 Hz is the best image-quality balance; the 120 Hz modes are worthwhile only with a compatible 120 Hz VRR display.

The recommended setup at a glance

Resident Evil 4 Remake gives you several independent controls: a graphics mode, ray tracing, HDR, VRR support through the console, post-processing effects and comfort options. The best combination depends on whether you value stable motion, reconstructed 4K detail, ray-traced lighting or a cinematic presentation.

Hardware and priority Recommended starting point Why
Base PS5, smooth motion Performance Mode; ray tracing off; PS5 VRR Automatic Performance Mode is the frame-rate-friendly choice. PSFoundry measured roughly 55–60 fps on the base console in its 2026 summary.
Base PS5, image detail Resolution Mode; ray tracing optional Resolution Mode targets a sharper checkerboard 4K image, but busy scenes can lower dynamic resolution and frame-rate consistency.
Base PS5, reflections and lighting Performance Mode with ray tracing enabled This keeps the faster mode while adding the lighting and reflection effects; the image and frame pacing are less consistent than with ray tracing off.
PS5 Pro, 60 Hz display Resolution Mode at 60 Hz with ray tracing available PSFoundry reports a locked 60 fps at 4K checkerboard on PS5 Pro.
PS5 Pro, 120 Hz VRR display 120 Hz Performance Mode for maximum speed, or 120 Hz Resolution Mode with ray tracing for more visual detail The measured ranges are approximately 85–105 fps in 120 Hz Performance and 70–90 fps in 120 Hz Resolution with ray tracing.

What the modes actually change

Performance Mode on a base PS5

Performance Mode is the safest default for a standard PS5. It gives the game a frame-rate-first budget and is intended to stay near 60 fps. PSFoundry’s 2026 testing summary places it around 55–60 fps, while TechRadar describes it as the option that favors fluidity. Small variations can still occur during demanding effects or crowded scenes, so “near 60” is more accurate than a guaranteed lock.

Use this mode if camera movement, aiming and quick turns feel more important than fine texture or reconstruction detail. It is also the better starting point for players who notice judder or discomfort in slower modes.

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Resolution Mode on a base PS5

Resolution Mode prioritizes a sharper checkerboard 4K presentation. The reconstruction can make distant geometry, foliage and architectural edges look more defined when you are sitting close to a 4K display. The trade-off is uneven performance: TechRadar notes that dynamic resolution can drop in busy scenes, and adding ray tracing can push the frame-rate much lower.

Choose it when you can clearly see the extra definition and are comfortable with less consistent motion. A display’s size, viewing distance and sharpness processing affect how obvious the difference is.

Ray tracing on the base PS5

Ray tracing adds more sophisticated reflections and lighting. In Performance Mode it is an optional visual enhancement, but it still consumes performance headroom. In Resolution Mode with ray tracing, PSFoundry reports a broad 40–60 fps range. That range can fall below the operating window of some VRR displays, which means VRR may not hide every hitch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ray tracing is therefore a preference setting, not a universal upgrade. Turn it on for reflective surfaces, wet areas and lighting behavior; leave it off when consistent camera response is your priority.

How to configure a base PS5 step by step

  1. Open Settings on the PS5 home screen, then choose Screen and Video and Video Output.
  2. Set VRR to Automatic. The option only has an effect when the connected television or monitor supports variable refresh rate.
  3. Set the console’s HDR option to enable HDR when supported by the display. Use the display’s calibrated game picture mode rather than a bright showroom or vivid mode.
  4. Check the output resolution and refresh-rate information shown in the Video Output screen. A 120 Hz mode will not be useful unless the display reports 120 Hz support.
  5. Launch Resident Evil 4 Remake and open its graphics options. Start with Performance Mode.
  6. Leave ray tracing disabled for the most even frame pacing. If you prefer the lighting effects, enable ray tracing while remaining in Performance Mode and play for several minutes in a busy area before deciding.
  7. Open the game’s HDR calibration screen and adjust it using the procedure in the HDR section below.
  8. In the image options, disable chromatic aberration and lens distortion if you want a cleaner, more accurate image. Leave depth of field and hair strands at your preferred look.
  9. Play with the field of view and camera-wobble settings until turning, sprinting and aiming are comfortable. These are comfort controls, not universal image-quality improvements.

Base PS5 mode comparison

Setting Motion behavior Image reconstruction Ray tracing Best for
Performance Mode, RT off Approximately 55–60 fps in PSFoundry’s 2026 summary Lower resolution priority than Resolution Mode Disabled Consistent aiming and camera movement
Performance Mode, RT on Faster mode with less performance headroom Performance-oriented image budget Enabled Players who want RT effects without using Resolution Mode
Resolution Mode, RT off Less even than Performance Mode in demanding scenes Sharper checkerboard 4K target; dynamic resolution may reduce detail in busy scenes Disabled Sharper image on a 4K display
Resolution Mode, RT on Approximately 40–60 fps according to PSFoundry’s 2026 summary Resolution priority with RT workload Enabled Visual effects when dips are acceptable

PS5 Pro settings

Resolution Mode at 60 Hz

On PS5 Pro, use Resolution Mode at 60 Hz when you want the strongest overall image-quality balance without moving to a 120 Hz setup. PSFoundry reports a locked 60 fps at 4K checkerboard, with ray tracing available. This is the straightforward recommendation for a Pro connected to a conventional 60 Hz television.

120 Hz Performance Mode

The 120 Hz Performance mode targets a much higher refresh rate. PSFoundry’s 2026 measurements put typical performance around 85–105 fps. A compatible 120 Hz VRR display is required to show the intended benefit; a 60 Hz panel cannot display the additional refresh updates.

Use this mode when responsiveness is more important than maximum reconstruction quality. The exact feel depends on how your display handles VRR and its supported refresh range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

120 Hz Resolution Mode with ray tracing

This mode combines the Pro’s 120 Hz output path with the higher-detail presentation and ray-traced effects. PSFoundry reports approximately 70–90 fps. It is the choice for players who have a 120 Hz VRR display but do not want to give up ray-traced lighting and reflections.

  • Ergonomic Design: 1500R curved, Tilt: -5°~15°, VESA Compatible (100 x 100mm), 178° Wide Viewing Angle.Recommended distance of playing games in this monitor is about 1.2 meters.

Because both 120 Hz modes rely on display support, check the television or monitor specifications and the PS5 Video Output information before judging the mode. A display that accepts 120 Hz but lacks VRR will not provide the same handling of frame-time variation.

HDR calibration without a universal slider number

There is no single correct HDR value for every OLED, LCD or gaming monitor. Panel brightness, tone-mapping behavior, picture mode and room lighting all change the result. Resident Evil 4 Remake’s HDR screen should therefore be calibrated by what you see, not by copying a number from another display.

  1. Put the television or monitor in its calibrated game picture mode. Disable any separate “store,” “vivid” or dynamic picture preset before adjusting the game.
  2. Enable HDR on the PS5 and in the game when the display supports it.
  3. On the game’s HDR calibration screen, locate the brightest symbol or logo.
  4. Raise or lower the peak-brightness control until that symbol is just below clipping. If the symbol disappears completely or bright details merge into a flat white area, back the setting down.
  5. Adjust the black-level or shadow control so dark detail remains visible without turning the entire scene gray. You should be able to distinguish the intended shadow information while preserving deep blacks.
  6. Recheck the result in an actual dark interior and an outdoor scene. If one looks correct but the other is crushed or washed out, revisit the display’s tone-mapping mode rather than forcing an extreme game slider value.

TechRadar confirms that the remake supports HDR and notes that disabling it exposes sRGB/Rec. 709 alternatives with different shadow behavior. If HDR consistently looks too dark, compare the game’s HDR image with the non-HDR option on the same display mode; the better choice is the one that preserves shadow detail and highlight separation in your room.

VRR: what it helps with and where it stops

Variable refresh rate synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the console’s changing frame delivery. That can reduce visible tearing and make small frame-time variations feel smoother. It does not create extra frames, raise a mode’s internal resolution or guarantee that a demanding setting will remain inside the display’s VRR range.

This limitation matters most with base-PS5 Resolution Mode and ray tracing, where the measured range can reach 40 fps. If the display’s lower VRR limit is higher than the game’s current output, the screen may leave VRR operation and show a more obvious judder or cadence change. In that situation, switching to Performance Mode or disabling ray tracing addresses the cause; changing only the console’s VRR toggle does not.

VRR setup checklist

  • Use a display that explicitly supports VRR over its HDMI input.
  • Set the PS5 VRR output to Automatic.
  • Enable the display’s own gaming or VRR mode if it has a separate control.
  • Use the HDMI input designated for the display’s high-refresh or gaming features.
  • Confirm in the PS5 Video Output information that VRR and the desired refresh rate are recognized.
  • If the picture flickers, test with ray tracing disabled and compare another HDMI input or display VRR setting.

Image-cleanup and presentation options

Option Recommended setting What changes
Chromatic aberration Off for a clean image Removes colored edge fringing. PSFoundry notes that the effect can make checkerboard reconstruction look blurrier.
Lens distortion Off for geometric accuracy Removes the curved-lens effect and produces a straighter, less stylized image. TechRadar lists it as a cinematic preference.
Depth of field Personal preference On preserves the cinematic focus effect; off gives a flatter, more consistently sharp presentation.
Hair strands Personal preference Changes hair sheen and appearance. TechRadar observed no major performance dip from the setting.
Field of view Adjust for comfort A wider view shows more peripheral space but changes how much of the scene is visible at once.
Camera wobble Adjust for comfort and motion tolerance Reducing movement can help players who experience discomfort during sprinting, attacks or rapid turns.

Chromatic aberration and lens distortion are the two clearest cleanup changes because they alter the entire image. Depth of field, hair strands, field of view and camera wobble are better treated as personal presentation or comfort controls.

Choosing settings by the way you play

You want the steadiest aiming

Use base-PS5 Performance Mode with ray tracing off, VRR Automatic and HDR calibrated. Disable chromatic aberration and lens distortion. This combination leaves the fewest competing effects in the frame-time budget and keeps the image free of colored edge fringing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You sit close to a large 4K screen

Try Resolution Mode with ray tracing off first. The sharper checkerboard reconstruction is easier to appreciate at a short viewing distance. If camera movement feels uneven in crowded areas, return to Performance Mode; the visible gain in sharpness is not useful if the motion cadence distracts you.

You care most about lighting and reflections

On a base PS5, test Performance Mode with ray tracing enabled before trying Resolution Mode with ray tracing. The latter can occupy a 40–60 fps range, so it is the more demanding combination. On PS5 Pro at 60 Hz, Resolution Mode offers the stronger visual balance while retaining ray-tracing availability.

You own a PS5 Pro and a 120 Hz VRR display

Compare the 120 Hz Performance and 120 Hz Resolution modes in the same location. Choose Performance for the higher measured range of about 85–105 fps. Choose 120 Hz Resolution with ray tracing when the 70–90 fps range and added visual effects are a better fit for your priorities.

You are sensitive to motion effects

Turn off lens distortion, reduce camera wobble and experiment with depth of field. Field of view is subjective: a wider setting can feel more comfortable for some players, while others prefer the tighter default framing. Change one control at a time so you can identify which effect is responsible for improvement or discomfort.

Troubleshooting dark, blurry or uneven images

HDR looks too dark

  • Confirm the display is in its calibrated game picture mode.
  • Run the in-game HDR calibration again and keep the brightest symbol just below clipping.
  • Check shadow visibility in a dark interior, not only on the calibration screen.
  • Compare HDR with the game’s sRGB/Rec. 709 presentation if your display’s HDR tone mapping produces crushed blacks.

The image looks blurry

  • Disable chromatic aberration, which can worsen the appearance of checkerboard blur.
  • Turn off lens distortion if curved edges or soft corners are distracting.
  • Compare Performance and Resolution modes from the same camera position; reconstruction and motion can make one appear sharper than the other depending on movement.
  • On a base PS5, remember that Resolution Mode can lower dynamic resolution in busy scenes instead of holding a fixed 4K output.

VRR does not remove judder

  • Check that VRR is set to Automatic on the PS5 and enabled on the display.
  • Verify the display’s supported VRR range.
  • Disable ray tracing in base-PS5 Resolution Mode if frame-rate dips approach or pass below the display’s VRR floor.
  • Use Performance Mode when consistent frame delivery matters more than reflections.

The 120 Hz option does not appear or feels unchanged

  • Confirm that the display supports 120 Hz on the connected HDMI input.
  • Check the PS5 Video Output information for the negotiated refresh rate.
  • Make sure VRR is supported if you want the display to adapt to the measured 70–90 or 85–105 fps ranges.
  • A 60 Hz display cannot show the additional refresh updates from a 120 Hz mode.

Why the remake’s darkness makes calibration important

Resident Evil 4’s art direction intentionally uses shadows and silhouettes rather than simply making every environment uniformly darker. Art director Hirofumi Nakaoka described the goal as emphasizing “shadows and silhouettes” to capture horror. That design makes black-level errors especially noticeable: crushing shadow detail can hide gameplay information, while lifting blacks too far removes the intended contrast.

The remake’s technical design also benefits from the PS5’s fast storage and graphics hardware. Director Yasuhiro Ampo said the enhanced data-reading speed allows higher volumes of assets, richer graphics and shorter loading times. Sound director Hiroshi Tamura has said that 3D audio was essential to shaping the game’s audio. Those systems do not change the display settings directly, but they explain why a balanced image and comfortable camera presentation matter during exploration and combat.

Final checklist before you keep a profile

  • Select Performance Mode on a base PS5 unless sharper reconstruction is your clear priority.
  • Use PS5 VRR Automatic only with a VRR-capable display, and remember it cannot conceal dips below the display’s operating range.
  • Keep base-PS5 ray tracing off for the cleanest frame pacing; enable it when reflections and lighting justify the trade-off.
  • Use PS5 Pro Resolution Mode at 60 Hz for the image-quality balance, or a 120 Hz mode when you have a compatible 120 Hz VRR display.
  • Calibrate HDR by clipping and shadow detail on your own panel rather than copying a universal slider value.
  • Disable chromatic aberration and lens distortion for the cleanest picture.
  • Treat depth of field, hair strands, field of view and camera wobble as preference and comfort controls.
